Relationships Of Food Faddism To Critical Thinking, Nutrition Knowledge And Some Demographic Characteristics, Mary Angelyn Auch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A 1972 national survey conducted for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) documented the pervasiveness of food faddism in the U.S. Among a randomly selected sample, fifty-two percent of the people had used vitamin or mineral supplements at some time during their lives. Ten percent of the sample, representing ten percent of the American population, believed that there are benefits to taking more vitamins than are normally needed. Three fourths of the sample believed that vitamins provide energy, and that feeling tired and run down indicates a probable need for more vitamins. One fifth believed that cancer and arthritis are …

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On The Dietary Intake Of College Students, Elizabeth Ann Pond Jan 1985

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On The Dietary Intake Of College Students, Elizabeth Ann Pond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to Guthrie, nutrition professionals are especially concerned about the food habits of adolescents. Dietary inadequacies are higher during adolescence than at any other stage of the life cycle. Deficiencies in this age range can have fat reaching effects, especially for females. Female adolescent nutritive needs are surpassed only by those during pregnancy and lactation. The adolescent who becomes pregnant before growth is complete is of particular concern. If nutritive intake is inadequate before conception the adolescent and her unborn child are at high risk. Another nutritionally related concern in adolescence is the increased incidence of eating disorders such as …

Because grasslands that have been plowed into cropland become subject to increased erosion risk, knowledge about other factors in the cultural system that are associated with these conversions. may be useful to those interested in monitoring or influencing them. While some research has been directed toward the adopt Ion of Environmental Innovations, there is a general lack of research concerning the conditions associated with the need for conservation activities. The above information suggests …

The Frequency Of Nurse Reported Stress And Its Relationship To The Physical Attributes Of Various Nursing Units, Richard Michael Jones Jan 1984

The Frequency Of Nurse Reported Stress And Its Relationship To The Physical Attributes Of Various Nursing Units, Richard Michael Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The nursing profession has a high attrition rate with respect to its work force. A 1977 study conducted by the United States Department of Labor estimated that twenty-seven percent of the total nurse population was neither employed nor looking for work. Holding this percentage constant for the 1980 statistics, there are approximately 400,000 additional registered nurses who are not working today. White asserts that "burnout" is the primary factor responsible for the attrition rate among professional nurses. Burnout is defined by Lavendero as the ineffective ability to cope with stress in the work environment. He argues that conclusive evidence concerning …
