Willa Sylbert Cather was born in December 7, 1873, in Winchester, Virginia, and Pearl Sydenstricker Buck was born in Hillsboro in the adjoining state of West Virginia nearly nineteen years later, on June 26, 1892. When they were sensitive young girls, both of them were exposed to "foreign” cultures, which were quite different from their original Victorian cultures of the East. Willa and her family moved to the Nebraska frontier when Willa was eight years old. In the Nebraska prairies of the late nineteenth century, there were many foreign immigrants who had come to settle: Swedes, Norwegians, Russians, French, Germans …

An Analysis Of Gender Differentials In Twenty-Seven Motivational Variables Influencing Career Aspirations Of Teachers And Administrators, Loretta G. Bailey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated a range of motivational variables which might lead individuals to become educational administrators. Identified and reported are those variables which are viewed by teachers who comprised the pool from which most future administrators are drawn. Twenty-seven items were identified and used on an instrument, designed by the writer. The null hypothesis for statistical differences between male and female educators was tested on each of the 27 items at the .05 level of significance, using multivariate analysis of variance and the test of simple main effects. A 20% sample of randomly selected male and female administrators produced 371 …

An Educational History Of The Gullahs Of Coastal South Carolina From 1700 To 1900 (Black Education), Elizabeth Hoit-Thetford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The educational efforts of the first fifty years of the 1700s for the Gullahs, black slaves brought to South Carolina's low country, were a by-product of the Church of England's concern for the souls of heathens. Through the Church's offspring, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, missionaries were sent to South Carolina beginning in 1702. By 1704, Samuel Thomas, the Society's first missionary there, reported that he had taught about twenty blacks to read, and by 1743 the Society opened a school for blacks in Charleston despite a 1740 law prohibiting slave education. Using two …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It has been recognized that there is a connection between exercise and mental well-being and studies conducted on college students and employees by Hayden and Allen, Pauley, Palmer, Wright, and Pfeiffer, and Short, DiCarlo, Steffee, and Pavolou all support a positive relationship between physical exercise and a feeling of positive self-worth. It has also been found by Conroy, Smith, and Felthous and Collingwood that physical fitness can function as a therapeutic intervention for mentally and physically debilitated clients. However, none of these studies segregated the findings according to group or individual exercise activities. The potential influence of the group setting …

Effect Of Level Of Exercise Of Self-Care Agency And Selected Pain Treatment Modalities In Surgical Patients, Candice Pederson
Effect Of Level Of Exercise Of Self-Care Agency And Selected Pain Treatment Modalities In Surgical Patients, Candice Pederson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Imagine being in severe pain. Imagine having significant pain for an extended period of time. Imagine being dependent on others for the relief of this pain. And imagine the anxiety associated with the uncertainty of not knowing pain relief will come when it is needed. The preceding are common occurrences among those persons facing illness, injury or surgery. The anxiety surrounding the fear that this pain will not be relieved can augment the pain itself. Post-operative pain can lead to complications such as pneumonia, atelectasis, and immobility. For example, research has indicated that measures which decrease pain may increase lung …

Censorship And Control Of The University Student Newspaper :17 Case Studies, Elizabeth A. Minden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
More than 330 colleges and universities throughout the United States offer degrees or programs in journalism. All of these colleges and universities have student newspapers. The student newspaper is one of the most common vehicles for college-educated journalists to receive their initial news-editorial experiences. The roles student newspaper advisers, college administrators, journalism departments, college student governments and college publications boards play in college newspaper management are important because most professional American newspapers prefer to employ college-educated journalists for their news-editorial staffs. According to Melvin Mencher, professor of journalism at Columbia University, to make the student newspaper a bona fide educational …
Frontier Agriculture, 1880-1910 : An Area Investigation Of Human And Environmental Factors Involved In The Process Of Agricultural Evolution In Davison County, South Dakota, Chak P. Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Our curiosity about how an area has developed into what it is today invariably draws our attention to its initial situation. In the United States, the frontier serves as the logical locus upon which questions such as the latter can be laid. Frederick Jackson Turner has popularized the frontier concept by elevating its place in the history of the American national development. What Turner's frontier thesis has for special offer to geography lies in the observation of the frontier as a discrete areal unit, set off, as it was, from the settled area due to the differential pace in the …

The Attitudes Of Judges, State's Attorneys, And Bar Attorneys Toward Allowing Television Cameras Into South Dakota Courtrooms, Terry L. Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The disenchantment between the bar and the press on camera coverage of court proceedings began in 1935 after Bruno Hauptmann was tried, convicted, and executed for the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh's son. Thousands of people gathered in the streets to wait for news of the trial while reporters and cameramen with film and still picture cameras covered the proceedings inside the courtroom. The American Bar Association adopted canon 35 to keep radio and photographic equipment out of the courtroom in 1937. Canon 35 was amended in 1952 to ban television cameras from the courtroom. A majority of states …

Role Expectations Of The Clinical Nurse Specialist, Michele Jans Crissman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem under investigation in this study is: To what extent do nurse managers and staff accept the expectations of the clinical nurse specialist in four identified role functions? Because the expectations of the CNS role have considerable influence on how the role is implemented, it would seem appropriate to examine the expectations of this role as accepted 9 by nurse managers and staff nurses. The American Nurses Association's (ANA) Social Policy Statement emphasizes that it is critical for the administrator and other nursing managers to whom the clinical specialist is responsible to understand and respect the individual's qualifications and …

The Application Of A Falls Risk Index, Marcelline R. Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the prospective use of a falls risk index. The research question was: To what extent do the intrinsic factors identified in the Tinetti et al. falls risk index predict which patients are likely to experience a fall. Hogue's ecological model of falls in late life provided a conceptual framework for the study.
Direct observation was used to collect baseline data from a convenience/purposive sample of 26 male patients in a midwest nursing home care unit with a rehabilitation focus. Patients were then assigned to one of three risk groups: yes-fall, 30% chance of fall, no-fall. Reports of …
