A Study In Elementary Schools In 1946 Of Twenty-Six Children Who Attended Mental Hygiene Clinic Nursery School, Louisville, Kentucky In 1939-1942., Ann Coleman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is an attempt to follow the development of the group of children who attended the Mental Hygiene Clinic Nursery School of Louisville, Kentucky in its first three years, September, 1939 through May, 1942. The children were studied on a comparative basis of their behavior in the two school situations - nursery school in 1939-1942 and elementary school in 1946. The study not only considers the child's behavior in the classroom, but also attempts to evaluate the effects at personality and environmental influences upon the child's school adjustment - his health, conditions in the home, and mental development. The …
The Opportunity Class Of The Mary D. Hill School., Gladys E. Wyatt
The Opportunity Class Of The Mary D. Hill School., Gladys E. Wyatt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In almost every classroom in the country there are overage boys and girls, retarded children who have been pushed along through school after repeated failures have convinced both them and their teachers and companions that they are of little consequence. Since not much can be done to remedy the situation after so many years, the only solution in most cases is to pass the children along as rapidly as possible, allowing them to sit in the successive grades where the intellectual tasks are completely beyond their limited abilities. Here they acquire more bad habits and often become personality or behavior …
The Problem Of The Chronically Ill In Louisville, Kentucky, 1946., Dinard S. Carr
The Problem Of The Chronically Ill In Louisville, Kentucky, 1946., Dinard S. Carr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the problems and implications of chronic illness will be discussed in their broader outlines, the purpose of this study is to see more specifically how chronic illness affects a particular group of patients. The questions, what are the problems and the needs of the chronically ill, what is the community doing to meet those needs, what are the facilities and what should they be, will be related to a representative sample of Louisville General Hospital patients. Many civic groups in Louisville have been articulate in expressing the need for planning for better convalescent and chronic care, among them the …

A Study Of German-Austrian Refugees In Louisville, Kentucky., Lina K. Wolff
A Study Of German-Austrian Refugees In Louisville, Kentucky., Lina K. Wolff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper will deal with the adjustment of refugees in an American middle-sized city, Louisville, Kentucky. It will attempt to touch the background and past of the group, but it will be pointed to a question which indeed is vital to each refugee: What does he make of his life after immigration? Can what was in origin compulsory, become constructive for the future? Will America for him be more than a haven of refuge after a harassing persecution - will it be a home for him and his children? And the answer to these questions is inextricably tied up with …
A Study Of The History Of Adult Elementary And Secondary Education And Possibilities For Future Service In Louisville, Kentucky., Flora L. Morris
A Study Of The History Of Adult Elementary And Secondary Education And Possibilities For Future Service In Louisville, Kentucky., Flora L. Morris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was inspired by a statement in the Louisville Public School Survey, 1943, in which Dr. George A. Works said, "Programs of adult education are exceedingly important in the modern community. The nature of modern life and the demands for continuous education and training suggest the need for school service in this area. Following the war, the demand will undoubtedly be very great. Louisville would do well to assign definite staff time for development of basic plans in this area." The writer was connected with the Works Progress Administration Adult Education Program as teacher from 1935 to 1937, and …
History And Development Of The Mental Hygiene Clinic Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary-Elizabeth O'Brien
History And Development Of The Mental Hygiene Clinic Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary-Elizabeth O'Brien
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interest in the field of Mental Hygiene and psychiatry has been stimulated by tensions of World War II. As in other communities there are mental hygiene and psychiatric facilities in Louisville. Kentucky. Since there is no available history compiled of this development such a study seems especially valuable at this time. How the community has gone about meeting the needs in this area of work in the past may be seen through such a study and may in turn prove a guide for future planning. The purpose of this dissertation is to trace the history and development of the Louisville …
A Follow-Up Study Of Thirty Eight Single Unmarried Mothers., Rose Migdal
A Follow-Up Study Of Thirty Eight Single Unmarried Mothers., Rose Migdal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study of thirty eight unmarried mothers known to the Children's Agency of Louisville, Kentucky is an attempt to find out what happens to these girls after the agency has terminated its contact with them. The study is not concerned with the problem of unmarried motherhood as such, but rather with the individual girl who gives birth to a child out of wedlock. The study, further, is not concerned with causal factors, the why and wherefore but rather with those conditions which brought the girl to a social agency when she finds that either she cannot help herself or her …
Home Instruction For Physically Handicapped White Children In Louisville, Kentucky 1939-1940 To 1943-1944, Inclusive., Caroline Finzer Gray
Home Instruction For Physically Handicapped White Children In Louisville, Kentucky 1939-1940 To 1943-1944, Inclusive., Caroline Finzer Gray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Eighty-four children have been enrolled in Home Instruction given by the Louisville Public Schools, during the past five years, 1939-1940 to 1943-1944, inclusive. Home Instruction is given only to those children who cannot attend school, due to various physical handicaps. The writer feels that it will be profitable to examine the data collected concerning the eighty-four pupils, not only for the guidance of those intimately concerned with the Louisville program, but also for the information of similar workers in other cities and of the large numbers of lay people whose chief interest is due to their feeling that "the physically …

A History Of The Council Of Social Agencies Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary Trueheart Williamson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Community social planning has recently received the spotlight of attention under the impacts of war and its related demands for a united nation and community. But to those who have had a more intimate contact with the field of social work this is not a new development. For more than twenty years there has been in urban areas a steady growth of organizations known as councils of social agencies, welfare councils, or community councils whose job it has been to coordinate and plan the social welfare programs for the communities of which they are a part. As in other cities, …

Convalescent Care In Louisville, Kentucky., Grace B. Caswell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is undertaken to survey and evaluate the adequacy of convalescent facilities available for indigent persons who have been under the care of the surgical service at the Louisville General Hospital. The adequacy of convalescent care will be measured first, in relation to its scope, second, in relation to its help to the patients, and third, in its interaction with other community agencies. The study is prompted by the recognition of the fact that convalescence is a sadly neglected field of medical care. Convalescence will be defined for the purposes of this study as the more or less gradual …

Adoption Procedures And Practices In Jefferson County, Kentucky, 1941., Ruby Arnold Dennis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is an attempt to evaluate the procedure employed in the adoption of children in Kentucky since the enactment of the new adoption law in June, 1940, which made mandatory a social investigation during the sixty-day period required between the date of the filing of the petition and the date of the court hearing. It aims (1) to examine the operations of the Kentucky law in the area of Jefferson County tor which the records were made available by the State Department of Welfare, Child Welfare Division, Frankfort, Kentucky, and (2) to measure the local procedure by the standard …
