The Effects Of Ice Cream In The Diet Of Young Life., Mildred A. Schneiderhan Jan 1926

The Effects Of Ice Cream In The Diet Of Young Life., Mildred A. Schneiderhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much work has been done in the past on the nutritional value in young life of different dairy products, all of which experiments have been carried to successful completion by various men at different times. There is, however, no published information demonstrating the comparative values resulting from experimental work in the nutritional value of ice cream as a supplementary diet in infant life. For the purpose of the following experiments, the albino rat, (Mus Norvegicus Albinus) and the Norway rat, (Mus Nor vegicus), together with Guinea Pigs and cats were used. It is a well-known fact that rats exhibit the …

Quantitative Determination Of The Elements In The Nodes And Internodes Of Normal And Abnormal Corn Plants, Percy Danielson Jan 1925

Quantitative Determination Of The Elements In The Nodes And Internodes Of Normal And Abnormal Corn Plants, Percy Danielson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last decade the annual loss due to corn rot diseases has been so great that much attention has been given this problem. These diseases, according to several authorities are caused by certain fungi and bacteria which live parasitically upon the corn plant and are known as root, stalk and ear rots. Several species are found on the seed and start growth as soon as the seed germinates. These same species are found living in the soil. When these organisms are found to be prevalent on the seed and in the soil all stages of growth in the corn …

The Growth Of Wheat Seedlings In Solutions Containing Monopotassium Phosphate, Calcium Nitrate, And Magnesium Sulphate, Singly And In Pairs., Joseph Carmin 1895- Jan 1924

The Growth Of Wheat Seedlings In Solutions Containing Monopotassium Phosphate, Calcium Nitrate, And Magnesium Sulphate, Singly And In Pairs., Joseph Carmin 1895-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soon after the atomic theory was established, it was found that the plant uses as sources of food not only the air and water, but also different constituents of the soil, dissolved in the soil moisture—the mineral nutrients. Ashes of different burned plants were analyzed; they were found to vary with the soil in which the plants were grown as well as with the species of the plant and the special organ from which the ashes were obtained. A great number of minerals was found in the ashes. The question arose soon, which of these elements is essential to the …

An Experimental Comparison Of The Feeding Value Of Soy Bean With Alfalfa Hay For Feeding Dairy Cows, Wilard R. Beall Jan 1924

An Experimental Comparison Of The Feeding Value Of Soy Bean With Alfalfa Hay For Feeding Dairy Cows, Wilard R. Beall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The tendency during the last few years has been to use more and more of the legumes for feeding dairy cows. Just a few years ago (1)”Dairymen near the Yakima Valley, Washington state, fed their cows nothing but alfalfa hay during the winter. The cows received 40 to 50 pounds of alfalfa per cow per day and produced from 6,000 to 7, 000 pounds of milk per year. A Guernsey cow gave 20 pounds of milk per day, four and one-half months after calving and have received no feed but alfalfa hay for two months previous to that time. The …

The Effect Of Endocrines Upon Animal Behavior., J. Hubert Geyer Jan 1924

The Effect Of Endocrines Upon Animal Behavior., J. Hubert Geyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is not the primary purpose of this present work to treat the problem of the evolution of behavior, but rather to give an analysis of animal behavior as observed. These observations may appear as simple tests, but they make possible a new way to measure the capacity and determine the rate of learning by the animal mind. Progress in learning takes place through increased variety and precision of the movements brought about by stimulation and is very clearly observed in Amoeba, where we find the production of varied movements and the resolution of one physiological state into another. Thus …

The Relative Feeding Value Of Soybean Meal Compared To Linseed Meal As A Protein Supplement For Dairy Cows For Milk And Fat Production, And Their Effect On The Quality Of The Butter Fat, John R. Bollinger Jan 1923

The Relative Feeding Value Of Soybean Meal Compared To Linseed Meal As A Protein Supplement For Dairy Cows For Milk And Fat Production, And Their Effect On The Quality Of The Butter Fat, John R. Bollinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The expansion of the dairy industry to all parts of our country has caused further search for protein feeds suitable for dairy cattle, both from the standpoint of the cow, and as an economical feed. The dairy farmer has been urged to produce roughages high in protein, but these usually do not suffice to make a balanced ration for high producing cows. Oil meal, cottonseed meal, and gluten meal have long been used as supplements in grain mixtures and have given satisfactory results. These concentrates are produced in limited areas, hence must be shipped, which adds to their cost, besides …

The Influence Of The Diet Of The Cow And The Effect Of Heat Upon The Antiscorbutic Potency Of Milk, Lynn Copeland Jan 1923

The Influence Of The Diet Of The Cow And The Effect Of Heat Upon The Antiscorbutic Potency Of Milk, Lynn Copeland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inroduction: For a long time there has been a belief among scientific investigators and medical men that certain diseases, both of man and animal were the direct result of a faulty diet. In other words, something which was needed by the body for maintenance of growth and health was thought to be frequently lacking in the diet of man and animal. Attention was first called to these accessory substances thru investigations into the cause of the disease beri-beri. In 1884, the Japanese Navy, under the direction of Admiral Takaki, positively demonstrated that beri-beri was the result of a faulty diet, …

The Effect Of Condensed, Dry, And Fresh Milk In The Diet Of Albino Rats., John T. Walsh May 1922

The Effect Of Condensed, Dry, And Fresh Milk In The Diet Of Albino Rats., John T. Walsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although much work has been done in determining the nutritional values of different milks, all of it has been carried on at different times by various men, and there is no published data demonstrating the relative values derived from experiments which were carried on simultaneously and in which all subjects were under the same conditions. It is well known that rats show the effect of conditions to which they are subjected very easily and respond to them in the same manner in which man does. They are therefore a fit subject for nutritional experimentation. The Albino rat lives three years …

The Effect Of Diet Of The Cow And The Pasteurization Of Milk In Closed Bottles Upon The Nutritive And Antiscorbutic Properties Of Cows' Milk, George C. Biggar Jan 1922

The Effect Of Diet Of The Cow And The Pasteurization Of Milk In Closed Bottles Upon The Nutritive And Antiscorbutic Properties Of Cows' Milk, George C. Biggar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Probably no discovery in the scientific world, and especially in the field of nutrition, has excited more interest in the past few years than the finding and naming of the three hitherto unknown food factors known as vitamins. For many years it has been observed that certain diets for man that apparently are satisfactory as far as their nutritive value is concerned, still seem to lack something necessary for normal growth and function, or else lead to some serious disease. For example it has been known for centuries that sailors on long ocean voyages where the diet consisted largely of …

Analysis Of The Water Insoluble Proteins Of Beef, Pork And Mutton By The Van Slyke Method., Edward H. Cox Jun 1916

Analysis Of The Water Insoluble Proteins Of Beef, Pork And Mutton By The Van Slyke Method., Edward H. Cox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

So far as the author has been able to find, there are no published analyses showing the relative composition of the most important used meat proteins, beef, pork and mutton, the Osborne and co-workers have published analyses of the water insoluble proteins of the muscle substance of ox, chicken, fish, and scallop. This paper gives the results of analyses, by the Van Slyke method, of the water insoluble fat-free proteins of beef, pork, and mutton.

The Chemical Distribution Of Phosphorus In Potato., Hattie L. Heft May 1913

The Chemical Distribution Of Phosphorus In Potato., Hattie L. Heft

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first effective impulse to a systematic investigation of the chemistry of food was given by Liebig some fifty years ago. The earliest quantitative analyses of food materials which we have found are those of potatoes reported by George Pearson in England, 1795. In 1805, Einhoff made similar analyses of potatoes. He also determined several of the constituents of the ash. Liebig and his associates Playfair, Boeckman and others, in the latter half of the last century, made analyses of foods using methods similar to those now in use. It is interesting to observe how accurate many of their results …

A Comparative Study Of Degenerative Tissue, Homer Davis Jan 1897

A Comparative Study Of Degenerative Tissue, Homer Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nutrition is the earliest and most constant of vital operations. So prominent is the nutritive apparatus of an animal that the animal has been likened to a moving sac, organized to convert foreign matter into its own likeness, to which the complex organs of animal life are but auxiliaries. In growth more material is used by the body-protoplasm that is expelled. Nutrition includes excretion i.e. the removal of spent material which is usually poisonous and which if allowed to remain in the body organism would impair nutrition in its fullest sense. The objects of nutrition are growth, repair, and propogation. …

A Study Of The Forage Plants Of South Dakota With Their Fungous And Insect Enemies, David Griffiths Jan 1893

A Study Of The Forage Plants Of South Dakota With Their Fungous And Insect Enemies, David Griffiths

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main object of this study being a better acquaintance with fungous parasites, the work on the host plants has been considerably abridged in order that the discussion might be shortened. It was the plan at first to include in this paper a carefully written description of each of the principal forage plants of the state. The futility of such a plan, however, soon became apparent, and it was accordingly decided to omit the description and include simply Distribution,

Habitat, Value as Forage, and the Fungous Parasites of each host. There are, therefore, several of our best forage plants omitted …
