Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus
Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Organisms of the genus Listeria have stimulated a great deal of interest as a result of their pathogenicity and affinity for the central nervous system. The clinical condition produced by this organism is known as listeriosis, or in ruminants as “circling disease”. The organism was described by Murray, Webb and Swann in 1926 as the causative agent of an eqizootic infection in laboratory rabbits and guinea pigs. Their observations showed that the disease produced emaciation, abundant exudate in serous cavities, necrotic foci in and on various organs, and a marked increase in monocytes circulating in the blood stream. The name …
Growth And Physiology Of A Soil Organism Which Is Resistant To The Toxic Effects Of Sodium Selenite, John C. Mickelson
Growth And Physiology Of A Soil Organism Which Is Resistant To The Toxic Effects Of Sodium Selenite, John C. Mickelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The occurrence of selenium in soils of the United States and its cinnection with a disease of livestock originally called selenium poisoning , is well established. The states of North Dakota and South Dakota have both reported areas of land on which the disease occurs. In 1954, soil samples (from areas in South Dakota in which there is solenium poisoning) we've brought to the South Dakota State College Experiment Stot1on for analysis. From one of those samples, a bacterium was found which was noted as being resistant to the toxicity of selenium and also as being capable of reducing sodium …
A Survey Of The Value Of The Homemaking Curriculum In South Dakota With Implications For Revision, Carol Siemann Wagner
A Survey Of The Value Of The Homemaking Curriculum In South Dakota With Implications For Revision, Carol Siemann Wagner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Homemaking education is no longer “cooking sand sewing” but is a program directed toward the goal of helping students to become happy, responsible family members. From this goal stems the family centered approach to teaching. It relates the curriculum to the realities of family living by using family life situations for learning experiences. The teacher is no longer the authority on material to be learned. To develop the family centered program, parents and students are cooperating with teachers in curriculum planning. A Guide for Developing a Homemaking Curriculum in Junior and Senior High Schools of South Dakota, published in …
The Effect Of Vitamin D. Supplementation On The Growth And Development Of Swine, Darwin Eugene Stolte
The Effect Of Vitamin D. Supplementation On The Growth And Development Of Swine, Darwin Eugene Stolte
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vitamin D, through its specific action in calcium and phosphorus metabolism and bone growth, is necessary for the production of a sound, well-developed skeleton which his essential to profitable pork production. The fact that common feeds used in swine rations, especially grains and plant protein supplements, are lacking in calcium, vitamin D and in some cases phosphorus, accounts in part for the appearance of rickets and kindred deficiency symptoms under many practical conditions. Rickets and related bone diseases are normally abated by sufficient exposure to direct sunlight. However, in instances where swine are confined indoors or do not receive sufficient …

A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The beef cattle industry is one og the major sources of rural income in South Dakota. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Services (1956), there were 1,492,000 beef cows and yearling beef heifers on the farms and ranches in South Dakota as of January 1, 1957. They also reported that sales from cattle and calves amounted to approximately 34.6 percent of the gross farm and ranch income in the state. Since the beef cattle industry is a major source of the farm and ranch income in South Dakota, any improvement in the performance of beef cattle will …

Comparative Study Of The Scholastic Ability, Scholastic Achievement And Activity Participation Of Home Economics Students At South Dakota State College, Deloris E. Mangels
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The status of the professional home economist is dependent at least partially on the relative standing of the home economics student to other students. While it is recognized that additional factors influence the home economist’s status upon graduation, it is felt that certain knowledge concerning the background of the home economics student would provide valuable information basic to developing a better understanding of home economists and their professional. This study is designed primarily as an investigation of the students enrolled as home economics majors at South Dakota State College. It concerns comparative data of the home economics and the non-home …

Studies Concerned With Selenium Poisoning In Rats, Robert David Romanowski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Part I. Studies of the effect of dietary carbohydrate and fat.--Part II. Studies of the effect of adding various fractions of linseed oil meal to the diets, including chemical work on the fractions.
The selenium poisoning problem has attracted much attention in Wyoming and South Dakota. In these two states, the damage to farm animals has been of great concern to farmers and ranchers in certain areas. The search for control measures against selenium poisoning has involved the testing of purified chemical compounds and natural food products. Purified chemical compounds found to be somewhat effective against selenium poisoning have been …
Investigations Of Methyl Donors And Linseed Oil Meal In Alleviating Selenium Poisoning, Eriks Leitis
Investigations Of Methyl Donors And Linseed Oil Meal In Alleviating Selenium Poisoning, Eriks Leitis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem of selenium poisoning has been extensively reviewed. Although a considerable amount of work has been done on this problem, the mechanism of the toxic action of selenium is not understood. This work has undertaken as part of an effort to determine the nature of the protective effect of certain substances against selenium poisoning, in that this might aid in understanding its toxic action. The conflicting findings concerning the effectiveness of methionine against selenium poisoning were obtained with a variety of diets and under a variety of other experimental conditions. It appeared, therefore, that certain unknown factors or conditions …
Digestibility Of Rations And Nitrogen Balance By Lambs As Influenced By Animal Fat, Urea, Soybean Meal And Linseed Meal, James King Turner
Digestibility Of Rations And Nitrogen Balance By Lambs As Influenced By Animal Fat, Urea, Soybean Meal And Linseed Meal, James King Turner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Feed processing and handling of livestock feeds have benefited from the use of fats in many ways. Nutritionally speaking, several reasons in favor of the use of stabilized animal fats in feeds have been reported. However, the optimum level and value of added fats in the rations for ruminants are not well established and further work is needed. It is known that fat is absorbed more slowly from the intestine than either carbohydrates or protein, and this may be an important factor in the utilization of added fat in the diet. Research with urea as a protein sparer has been …
Consumption And Preference Patterns For Butter And Margarine In Two South Dakota Cities, Norman L. Rollag
Consumption And Preference Patterns For Butter And Margarine In Two South Dakota Cities, Norman L. Rollag
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Present quality standards for butter are based to a large extent on taste preferences of consumers which were assumed to exist a number of years ago. This study endeavored to gather additional evidence regarding consumer preferences for various flavors, texture and color qualities found in butter and the other fats and oils. This study also attempted to determine what influences personal characteristics (such as occupation, annual family income or factors associated with place of birth, national origin, rural or urban background, religious preferences, and age of respondent) had upon consumption of various spreads, especially butter and margarine. The major objectives …
Modification Of Selenium Distribution In The Rat, Ivan S. Palmer
Modification Of Selenium Distribution In The Rat, Ivan S. Palmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In many semi-arid regions plants may take up toxic quantities of selenium. If livestock consume very large amounts of such plants they will ingest enough selenium to produce toxic symptoms. This presents a serious problem to the farmers and ranchers in such areas is certainly the cause of much financial loss.
Since the discovery by Franke in 1934 that selenium was the cause of the condition then known as “alkali disease”, a great deal of work has been done on the problem of selenium poisoning. As a result of this research, several substances have been discovered which give complete or …

The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Alfalfa Hay In A Growing Fattening Ration For Pigs, Laverne J. Kortan
The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Alfalfa Hay In A Growing Fattening Ration For Pigs, Laverne J. Kortan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
South Dakota farmers each year produce approximately 2 million bead of hogs which are valued at 75 to 100 million dollars. The income derived from the sale of hogs makes up approximately 20 percent of their cash fars income. The financial return received by the swine producer is an indication of his success. This success will depend in part upon the kind and cost of ration and the gaining ability of the pigs receiving this ration. The most important factor affecting profits in pork production is the cost of production. Recent studies indicate that approximately 80 percent of the total …
A Study Of The Relationship Of Antibiotics On Fecal Microflora Of Chicks, Robert C. Halseth
A Study Of The Relationship Of Antibiotics On Fecal Microflora Of Chicks, Robert C. Halseth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The advent of antibiotics in animal nutrition placed new emphasis on the intestinal microflors. E.L.R. Stokstad (38) presented the following observations as indicating that the growth promoting effect of antibiotics was due to the action on the bacteria of the intestinal trace. “(1) Antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents of widely varying chemical structure are effective. This precludes the possibility of their being incorporated into any growth essential for the animal. (2) The ineffectiveness of antibiotics in increasing growth in the germ free animal. (3) The ineffectiveness of aureomycin in increasing growth of the developing chick embryo. (4) The effect of sanitation …
A Survey Of The Occupational Status Of Post World War Ii Agriculture Education Graduates Of South Dakota State College, Harry Franz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today facts are demanded by everyone and for every purpose. To some extent, every activity of our life is governed by the results of a study of books and periodicals. This is true of a farmer cultivating his land, feeding his livestock, or purchasing his machinery. It is also true of persons in other vocations; the minister, the banker, the public official, the educator, the business man, and many others. When the vocational agriculture teacher has a problem he consults a “Handbook on Teaching Vocational Agriculture” which is a collection of organized facts based on experience. The efficiency in teaching …

A Microchemical Modification Of The Mccarthy And Sullivan Method For The Determination Of Methionine, Emilia Rodelas Joson
A Microchemical Modification Of The Mccarthy And Sullivan Method For The Determination Of Methionine, Emilia Rodelas Joson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Methionine was discovered in 1922 by Mueller (33) and was first known as Mueller’s acid. In 1928 Barger and Coyne (6) found that it was a methylated sulfur compound known as alpha-amino-gamma-methyl thio-butryic acid and later gave it the present shorter name of methionine. Rose and his associates (34) have shown that it is the essential sulfur amino acid and not cysteine as was formerly thought. Methionine plays an important role in the growth of plants and animals: first, as a methylating agent; second, as an amino acid essential for the building of tissue proteins; third, as a source of …
Effects Of Antibiotics Fed To Pigs During The Growing-Fattening Period, Harold John Kurtz
Effects Of Antibiotics Fed To Pigs During The Growing-Fattening Period, Harold John Kurtz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many South Dakota farmers depend upon the pig enterprise for a portion of their yearly income. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, approximately 19 per cent of the cash farm income of South Dakota is obtained from the marketing of hogs. The successful swine producer’s primary objective is to receive the greatest possible financial return for his investment and labor. In order to accomplish this aim, it is often desirable to feed a ration which produces as fast a rate of gain as possible without sacrificing feed efficiency or carcass quality. The growth response obtained by …
A Study Of The Effects Of Aureomycin Upon The Microflora Of The Ovine Rumen, Milton Allison
A Study Of The Effects Of Aureomycin Upon The Microflora Of The Ovine Rumen, Milton Allison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Growth stimulation in domestic animals due to dietary supplementations of antibiotics has received a great deal of attention in the last few years. Moore and co-workers in 1946 (35) observed that the addition of streptomycin to the diet of chicks led to increased growth responses and in 1948 Harned et al. (17) administered aureomycin to chicks and he also noted an increased growth rate. Little significance was attached to these discoveries and the present interest in antibiotics as feed supplements is the result of investigations by Stokstad and co-workers in 1949 (40) with cultures of Streptomyces griseus and Streptomyces aureofaciens …
Effect Of Alfalfa Meal And Brewers Dried Yeast On Digestibility Of Different Qualities Of Prairie Hay By Cattle And Sheep, Leo Dubose
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Roughages are one of the most important feeding stuffs, and a large quantity is produced each year that has a little market value except as a feed for ruminants. Cattle and sheep are able to consume and utilize efficiently large quantities of roughages when they are supplied with an adequate amount of nutrients essential for the animal and for an active bacterial population in the rumen. However, roughages vary considerably in their nutrient content and, thus, in their value as a feed, depending upon many factors, some of which are discussed in the review of literature. It is important that …

Methods Of Storing Alfalfa For Fattening Cattle, Leonard Herman Timmerman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cattle feeders and ranchers of South Dakota winter and fatten a great number of cattle on harvested grasses and legumes. The forages are stored for winter feeding both as hay and as silage. Alfalfa is one of the important crops in both the eastern and western portions of the state. The use of alfalfa, particularly as silage, in cattle feeding is increasing. This has raised many questions regarding the efficiency of alfalfa silage in relation to hay. A number of experiments have been conducted at various stations in which the feeding value of grass and/or legume silage has been compared …
