A series of experiments was conducted using lambs and rats to determine the effect of various levels and sources of dietary phosphate on the incidence of phosphatic urinary calculi. Additional experiments were conducted to determine the degree of protection afforded sheep against urolithiasis by feeding various salts, and to determine the effect of these salts on excretion and retention of various ions. The lambs used in the sheep experiments were crossbred lambs weighing approximately 30 to 33 kg. They were fed a fattening ration consisting of ground shelled corn, alfalfa hay or silage (corn or sorghum) and soybean meal (approximately …

Digestibility Studies With Western Wheat Grass, Marvin John Wurster Jan 1967

Digestibility Studies With Western Wheat Grass, Marvin John Wurster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to make the most economical usage of our range forages it is essential that we know when the forage is most digestible in order for livestock to obtain maximum benefit from it. For many years cutting date has been the most common measure used to determine when a forage contains the most nutritive value. In many grasses emergence of the seed head or seed maturity has been used to determine when a particular forage should be harvested, However, western wheatgrass (Agropyron mithill) is not dependent on seed for reproduction and under range conditions often does not produce a …

Factors Affecting Body, Texture, And Water Holding Capacity Of A New Low-Fat Spread-Type Dairy Product, Basil K. Dalaly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At the South Dakota State University Dairy Science Department, a challenging work is being conducted to develop a new spread type· dairy product which is made almost entirely of dairy ingredients. It contains about 40% fat, 6% protein, 40% water, and 1.9% salts. Among the problems which faced the workers on this project were the process induced changes in the protein and the water holding capacity, which are interlinked. The problem of water holding capacity is increased by the high water content of the product compared with butter, which contains about 16% water. Maintaining the stability of the fat emulsion …

A Comparison Of Corn Silage And Forage Sorghum Silage In The Production Of Beef, Herbert Lawrence Sorbel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Production of silage per acre varies in different areas of the United States. The type of forage used has a large effect on the tonnage of silage produced. Two of the common crops used for high production of silage in South Dakota are corn and forage sorghum. When stored as silage, sorghum has produced as high as 27 tons of feed yielded on and one-half to two times as many tons of silage per acre of corn. Ruminant animals are well adapted to utilizing large amounts of roughages in their rations. These animals have the capacity to consume three to …

A Histological Study Of The Various Tissue Components Of Raw And Cooked Longissimus Dorsi Muscle In Pork, Dorothy E. Deethardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Muscle fibers and connective tissue are known to affect tenderness. The partitioning of these two structures was first attempted by Lehman as early as 1897 (Wilson, et, al, 1954). Since that time chemical and histological work has been examined extensively to relate tissue components to tenderness. This study was undertaken to evaluate: (1) the effect of fixatives on (a) the reticular, collagenous, and elastic connective tissue of raw and cooked pork muscle and (b) the fiber diameter in the raw state; (2) the type and amount of connective tissue in pork muscle and the effect of heat on the various …

Hydrologic Aspects Of Water Harvesting, Sidney W. Black Jan 1966

Hydrologic Aspects Of Water Harvesting, Sidney W. Black

As is most Midwestern states, livestock consumption, human consumption, irrigation, recreation, and wildlife are all in competition for the available water supplies in South Dakota. It is the purpose of this study to develop design criteria for a more efficient system of collection water to assist in satisfying the vast demands of livestock consumption. A moisture shortage can be the downfall of any livestock producer. There are roughly 728 million acres of rangeland in the continental United States with 26.7 million acres in South Dakota (18). Most of this area is available for domestic livestock grazing, but a large portion …

Univalents were studied in the microsporocytes of a triploid sorghum plant which was derived from a selfed haploid. At metaphase I, the frequencies of univalent varied with cell maturity which was judged by anther development. The developmental stages of anthers were E, M, L, VL, and VVL for early, medium, late, very late, and very, very late respectively. Univalents averaged 2.3 per cell at the earliest (E) stage increased to 3.9 per cell at the latest (VVL) stage. A similar tendency was found from L to VVL at anaphase I and telophase I. Trivalents were also studied in cell populations …

Lipid And Amino Acid Studies Of Selenium Toxicity With The Rat, Mary Jane Abraham Jan 1966

Lipid And Amino Acid Studies Of Selenium Toxicity With The Rat, Mary Jane Abraham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium exhibits unusual biological properties in that it is a micro nutrient for animals (1) and some plants (2) and yet at slightly higher levels it may be very toxic (3,4). Neither the active forms of selenium nor the mechanisms by which its biological effects are produced are well understood. Thus, many aspects remain to the investigated in this area. Franke (9), while working with the affected grain at South Dakota State College, produced the toxic symptoms experimentally. Following the discovery by Robinson (10) of selenium in toxic forages and grains. Franke (12) further deduced that plants incorporate soil selenium …

Suitability Of Cheese Whey As A Substrate For Vitamin B12 Production By Propionibacterium Shermanii, Lloyd B. Bullerman Jan 1965

Suitability Of Cheese Whey As A Substrate For Vitamin B12 Production By Propionibacterium Shermanii, Lloyd B. Bullerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Disposal of waste is a major problem confronting the food industry today. These wastes are of varied composition and origin. One such material is cheese whey. Most of the surplus whey is considered to be and handled as an industrial waste, and disposed of in some manner. Whey is a by-product of cheese making. Since 90% of the starting volume of milk remains as whey after cheese manufacture, annual production of whey is large. Herein lies a large part of the whey problem, the fact that the actual consumption of whey is a small part of the total production. If …

Comparisons Of Ear Corn And Shelled Corn In Various Types Of Rations For Finishing Cattle, Gary Bruce Haiwick Jan 1965

Comparisons Of Ear Corn And Shelled Corn In Various Types Of Rations For Finishing Cattle, Gary Bruce Haiwick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ruminants were once considered placid animals with the rumen serving as a storehouse for the feeds harvested when favorable weather and freedom from predatory animals permitted, and then retiring to a relatively safe place to ruminate and digest the stored feed. The large capacity and microbial digestion within the rumen enable ruminants to consume and utilize roughages efficiently. A large number of experiments have been conducted during the past several years to determine the effects of proportion of concentrates to roughages on rate and efficiency of production by cattle. Alfalfa hay is widely used in finishing rations for cattle and …

Effects Of B Vitamin Deficiencies On Energy Metabolism Of The Chick, William Clarence Lockhart Jan 1965

Effects Of B Vitamin Deficiencies On Energy Metabolism Of The Chick, William Clarence Lockhart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Approximately two decades ago Robertson et al. (1948) reported that high-energy diets supported faster growth of young chicks with an improvement in feeding efficiency. This seemed to open an era in poultry nutrition in which much work was conducted in order to establish the quantitative relationships between dietary energy levels and nutrients. With current emphasis on the energy content of the diet, a knowledge of those factors which interfere with the most efficient utilization of energy is important. Nutritional imbalance was shown by Sure (1941) to decrease the net energy or productive energy content of the diet. The B complex …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Teton Dakota Indians of the northern Great Plains have stirred the imagination of the people in America since they were first encountered by the early explorers. The frontiersmen found them living in the woodlands of the western Great Lakes where they were settled farmers. A century of warfare between the Chippewa and the Dakotas finally came to an end when the former group had occupied the woodland farms of northern Minnesota and the latter had migrated on to the plains. After wandering and fighting as they retreated westward, the Teton Dakotas were gradually transformed from peaceful woodsmen into skilled …

A Social System Analysis Of The Changing Food Practices Of The Teton Dakota Indians, 1800-1900, Norma R. Seerley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Food is a necessary element for satisfying a basic need of man. Without it, man could not exist. All of these foods have caloric values and vitamin content, and all are available to the various societies. A society also defines the purpose and emphasis to be given food. It may be a means for stilling hunger or getting nutrition; it may regard eating as a duty or virtue, or as a gustatory pleasure, or even as a social or religious communion. The Dakota’s choice of foods was originally fashioned by the kinds of foods available. Through recordings in history, the …
