Flavor Factors Involved In Acceptability Of Carp For Human Consumption, Clarice E. Shank
Flavor Factors Involved In Acceptability Of Carp For Human Consumption, Clarice E. Shank
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Carp constitutes one of South Dakota's relatively untapped natural resources. Mis-named a trash fish, it represents a largely unappreciated source of high biological protein food. Little research has been developed to date concerning this vigorous and adaptable fresh-water fish. In Asian and European countries the carp has long been cultivated as a desirable food fish. Introduced into the waters of this country however, the carp competed so successfully against game fish that it soon lost favor. Methods for eliminating carp from lakes and rivers have proved only partially effective. Prejudice against carp as a desirable food fish has continued to …

Characteristics Of Low-Income Families In The Head Start Program In Three Eastern South Dakota Counties, Christopher Lee Smith
Characteristics Of Low-Income Families In The Head Start Program In Three Eastern South Dakota Counties, Christopher Lee Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Little has been published which deals specifically with families in the Head Start program. Therefore, it would seem most appropriate to ask: What characteristics do Head Start families possess; in what way, if any, do these characteristics differ from those characteristics which are frequently attributed to the "poverty type" family; and, what are the Head Start parents impressions of the Head Start program. Objective 1. To determine the extent to which a sample of Head Start families possesses certain social and demographic characteristics which have been cited as common among families participating in the Head Start program, or among poverty …
A Study Of Protein Content And Its Relationships To Other Phenotypic Characters In Iterspecific Oat Crosses, Leroy A. Spilde
A Study Of Protein Content And Its Relationships To Other Phenotypic Characters In Iterspecific Oat Crosses, Leroy A. Spilde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Plant hybridizers in the past century depended primarily upon the crossing of cultivars with superior agronomic and quality characteristics as a method of improving yield potential of hybrids and derived pure lines. The hybridizer is continually faced with · the challenge of finding genetic sources of resistance to diseases which cause reduction in yie1d and often lower grain qua1ity. Often there is no known superior source of resistance within the species. This has motivated a search of species related to common oats, Avena sativa L., as sources for developing resistance in cultivated varieties. Concern is intensifying over the rapidly expanding …
Management And Nutrition Of Early Weaned Foals, Brian P. Thiel
Management And Nutrition Of Early Weaned Foals, Brian P. Thiel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the current trends in horse popularity, the demand for horses as performance and pleasure animals has increased. As this demand has increased, many horses have been retained solely for their ability as working animals. Therefore, many mares have not been bred since pregnancy would hinder their usefulness. If the horse owner is to breed his mare and also use her as a performance animal, he must initially contend with the pregnant mare and after parturition with the often annoying foal. For the mare to produce a foal and also be used as an effective performance animal, the foal should …
Physical Conditioning And Ammonium Carbonate Affecting Blood Ammonium And Swimming Performance Of Dogs, Larry Alan Bjurstrom
Physical Conditioning And Ammonium Carbonate Affecting Blood Ammonium And Swimming Performance Of Dogs, Larry Alan Bjurstrom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ammonia is produced by the working muscle of exercising mammals and cellular metabolic process of resting mammals. Normally relatively minute blood ammonium-nitrogen (BAN) levels are present because mammals have efficient systems for excreting ammonia or converting it to non-toxic end products. Impaired or inadequate detoxification process allow elevated BAN levels with excessive ammonia production. Above normal BAN levels produce deleterious effects which are well known to many research fields. When impaired or inadequate detoxification process occur in an exercising mammal, deterioration of performance is manifested in physical exhaustion and fatigue. Mobilization and enhancement of the KrebsHenseleit urea cycle by addition …

Replacement Of Protein With Amino Acids In Diets For Laying Hens And Turkey Poults, Edwin J. Novacek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Low protein diets were formulated for experiments with laying hens and turkey poults. The diets were supplemented with equal amounts of protein and different feedstuffs while maintaining equal calculated levels of selected amino acids. Single trails were also reported for factorially applied amino acid supplements to turkey starter and cage-layer diets. The three-year studies indicated that a typical corn-soy layer diet diluted with glucose monohydrate to 9.4 percent protein was deficient in methionine, lysine and tryptophan. Attempts to further improve the rate of egg production by additional supplements of arginine, isoleucine, valine, or diammonium citrate were not successful. The low …

Effect Of Days Open On Lactation Production, Roger L. Ripley
Effect Of Days Open On Lactation Production, Roger L. Ripley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Accurate evaluation of dairy production records is essential if dairymen are to establish and maintain profitable dairy herds and efficient culling programs. Improper record evaluation may result in. saving breeding stock that otherwise might be eliminated. Many factors may influence the validity of individual production records. Adjustment factors, currently in use by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for sire and cow evaluations, are generally accepted as removing the majority of these influences. Consequently, these factors are invaluable to practical dairymen. The adjustment factors, suggested by McDaniel, et al. (24) in 1967, take into account the geographical location, season …
Ochratoxin In Poultry Feeds : Toxic Effects On Hens, Harlal Choudhury
Ochratoxin In Poultry Feeds : Toxic Effects On Hens, Harlal Choudhury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ochratoxin is a toxin produced by fungus Aspergillus ochraceus Wilh. This is one of the poisonous metabolites, like aflatoxin, which when ingested by livestock, poultry, and human beings could produce toxigenic effects—so-called mycotoxicoses. The fungus A. ochraceus is widely distributed in nature and often found in soil and vegetation. Scientists, while searching for causative agents of certain diseases not of bacterial, viral, or nutritional origin, conducted a series of experiments a few decades ago using different species of fungi grown on food and feedstuffs. Toxic effects concurrent with antimicrobial activity of certain species of molds created problems in separating one …

Supplementation With Vitamins A And D Of Beef Cattle Finishing Rations Containing Various Levels Of Carotene From Corn Silage And Corn Grain, Harold Richard King
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the need for vitamin A and vitamin D supplements with rations composed of various levels or corn silage and corn grain when fed to cattle. Early investigations with vitamin D demonstrated that the reduced intensity or sunlight during the winter months resulted in decreased cutaneous formation of vitamin D and that dark- skinned animals synthesized less vitamin D than light skinned animals under given conditions of light intensity. Thus this experiment was conducted with Angus and Angus x Hereford crossbred steers and, to the extent possible under seasonal conditions considered to be …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The neonatal-anemia syndrome, an anemia of newborn animals, in a commonly observed physiological phenomenon in swine, humans and rats. The severity of the anemia is subject to unpredictable individual variation, but may be modified by the nutrition of the dam. Alterations in swine neonatal hemogram values begin 3-5 days postpartum and include decreases in packed cell volume and hemoglobin concentration. Vigorous and healthy appearing newborn become weak and particularly subject to infective agents and stresses, which may terminate in death. A slow return to postpartum hemogram values is observed if the newborn animal survives. The economic considerations of newborn mortality …
The Effects Of Selected Training Intensities And Durations On Blood Cholesterol And Selected Anthropometric Measurements, Alan Ingmar Molde
The Effects Of Selected Training Intensities And Durations On Blood Cholesterol And Selected Anthropometric Measurements, Alan Ingmar Molde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Physical inactivity, due to automation and our busy mode of living, has contributed to a health problem in modern society. When obesity, high-fat diets, cigarette smoking, and stress are added, the end-product is an alarming increase in incidence of diseases of the heart and lungs. Admittedly, such diseases are multifactorial in cause, but inactivity appears to assume an increasingly important role. Exercise in relation to preventative and rehabilitative medicine, however, is a new and rapid changing field of research. Consequently, the knowledge concerning physical conditioning and training programs is limited and inadequate. Therefore, educators in health and physical education are …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stock cultures of a pure strain of C. ulmi were obtained from the Plant Science Department at South Dakota State University. The inoculum was maintained on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) in petri dishes. On this medium, the fungus produced a grayish white rather sparse and appressed mycelium. Conidia were produced in heads on branched conidiophores. Quite often some sectoring was observed on PDA. Cultures producing coremia, obtained on 2% American elm shavings (on dry weight basis) plus bacteriological agar (8 g/1), were also used as an inoculum source. As is shown, this medium produced coremia and very little vegetative mycelium. …
Optimum Design Of Transversely Loaded Concrete Beam, Sheng Lung Tsai
Optimum Design Of Transversely Loaded Concrete Beam, Sheng Lung Tsai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
American agriculure has advanced considerably in recent years. These unprecedented advances result primarily from recent developments which have occurred in agriculture science and technology. Recent trends have been toward the feeding of more animals on fewer feedlots. The concentrating of large numbers of animals has undoubtedly increased the efficiency of animal producion in certain parts of the country. But the confinement of large numbers of animals has undoubtedly increased the efficiency of animal production in certain parts of the country. Because waste management has become a major operational problem, improved methods of handling, treatment, and disposal of animal wastes must …

The Effect Of Harvesting And Storage Methods On Chemical Composition And In Vitro Digestibility Of First Cutting Alfalfa Hay, Perry A. Fales
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The importance of alfalfa hay in dairy cattle feeding is generally acknowledged. The reasons why alfalfa is used so extensively in dairy cattle rations are due to its high protein content, high acceptability by cattle, its wide ·area of adaptation, and high yields. A popular way of handling the forage is to put it up as hay. South Dakota produced 3,261,000 tons of alfalfa hay in 1968. There were 73 million tons of alfalfa hay produced in the United States during 1968 (10) making it a crop of major importance. Farming practices have changed considerably the last ten years. Among …
A Comparison Of Management Systems For The Ewe Flock, Roger Allen Lind
A Comparison Of Management Systems For The Ewe Flock, Roger Allen Lind
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Generally sheep production relates to a grassland type of agriculture. But in many areas increasing acreages are used for cultivated crops, and less land is available for pasture due to new or improved cultural practices, increased fertilization, new or improved plant species and, in some areas, irrigation. Since the availability of land for use as pasture will most likely decrease in the future due to the increasing population and food demands of the world, confinement rearing of sheep may become a necessity. Mechanization in the sheep industry has been slow, while the use of confinement or semi-confinement management systems, laborsaving …

A knowledge of the various factors that affect dietary intake and selection would permit the range manager to more wisely plan the …
Methods For Rapid Identification And Enumeration Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Lawrence Robert Koupal
Methods For Rapid Identification And Enumeration Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Lawrence Robert Koupal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Because water can be a carrier of enteric pathogenic microorganisms, water pollution from a fecal source is a serious problem to a community obtaining water from streams and rivers. Adequate methods for detection of the enteric pathogens are lacking, consequently, much attention has been given to the detection of other microorganisms as indicators of fecal pollution. The microorganisms called the fecal streptococci are those streptococci which are commonly found in the intestinal tract of man and animals. The fecal streptococci have been divided into two basic groups within the Lancefield Group D streptococci. These two groups are the enterococcus group …
The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones
The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Family life education includes the total education for living in families. The main emphasis of all home economics or homemaking education is life as it is lived within the home and family. Some aspects of home economics are usually included in the curriculum at all age levels from early childhood through secondary education. Family life in America has changed over the years. Such factors as family mobility, a greater amount of leisure time, an increase in early marriages, and more mothers employed outside the home indicate the need for education in family living. Moreover, currently fewer youngsters learn about homemaking …
