Evaluation Of A Ninth Grade Transition Program For At-Risk Students., Terry William Caldwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have identified the transition from middle to high school as a critical point in teenagers' educational development. Despite sweeping educational reforms, many students are leaving high school without graduating. Local school districts are struggling to redesign high schools to provide the educational programs necessary for at-risk students' success. Creating smaller learning communities and developing transition programs have shown success in addressing these problems.

Sustained research shows promise in minimizing the effects of the transition process and adds to the body of knowledge.

A case study approach using archival data was used to explore the differences in three Bearcat "PRIDE" …

Development And Validation Of A Scale To Measure Health-Related Socioeconomic Well-Being In Persons With A Cancer Diagnosis., Barbara Anderson Head

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The impact of socioeconomic status on the diagnosis, treatment, survival, and overall quality of life in persons with cancer has been well documented. Yet, many studies overlook the relevance of socioeconomic factors when measuring the impact of cancer care. A multitude of tools exist for the measuring of health-related quality of life (QOL) in oncology, but the majority do not recognize socioeconomic well-being as a relevant domain. The FACT-G, perhaps the most often used measure of QOL in oncology, measures the domains of physical, functional, social/family, and emotional well-being as core measures with optional instruments available to address spiritual well-being …

The Association Of Employment And Out-Of-Pocket Health Care Expenditures Burden For Poverty Families., William A. Carroll 1960-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses data from the 2002 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey in a quantitative examination of the capacity of the labor market in the United States to provide employment to the poor which enables them to afford health care. The out-of-pocket health care expenditures of the working poor are compared to those of the non-working poor to see which group has the lower financial burden due to health care expenditures. Both bivariate and multivariate statistics are used, and show that employment lowers the financial burden of out-of-pocket health care expenditures for the poor. However, evidence is presented that shows this …

The Effects Of Trivalent Arsenicals And Thioredoxin Reductase Inhibitors On Selenium Metabolism In Lung Cell Culture Models, Sarah Ryann Talbot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Arsenic exposure, through various routes, is associated with the development of cancer of the skin, lung, liver, kidney, and bladder. Treatment of cells in culture with trivalent arsenicals has been shown to increase reactive oxygen species (ROS). In particular, monomethylarsonous acid (MMAIII), a trivalent metabolite of arsenite, is highly cytotoxic and possibly carcinogenic. Three trivalent arsenicals; arsenite, arsenic trioxide (ATO), and MMAIII, are also known inhibitors of the selenoprotein thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Selenium, an essential micronutrient in mammals, is needed in the form of selenocysteine for activity of this enzyme and other selenoproteins. TrxR is part of a key component …

Fate Of The Vegetal Yolky Cells In The Direct Developing Frog Eleutherodactylus Coqui, Uma Karadge Jan 2007

Fate Of The Vegetal Yolky Cells In The Direct Developing Frog Eleutherodactylus Coqui, Uma Karadge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Puerto Rican tree frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui, is a striking example of a deviation from the indirect mode of development among amphibians. E. coqui does not have an intermediate tadpole stage. It hatches out directly as a free-living froglet, deriving nutrition from the yolky material attached to its intestine. The innermost of the three germ layers, the endoderm, forms the lining of the gut. In the amphibian model Xenopus laevis, the endoderm originates from the vegetal hemisphere. The cells, which are originally present on the vegetal surface of the embryo, end up forming the definitive gut. They, thus, provide nutrition …

Postmodern Feminism, Hypertext, And The Rhetoric Of Cooking Websites, Heather Eaton Mcgrane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the ways cookbooks and their rhetorical dimensions have been re-imagined using hypertext and Web technology. Using the tenets of postmodern feminist rhetoric and Web design theory, the study considers how commercial cooking hypertexts construct users' identities. Although hypertext is a potentially empowering technology, democratizing rhetoric and knowledge making practices, commercial hypertext often circumscribes agency formation and prohibits participation. Participatory, constructive hypertexts are difficult to design and costly to maintain. Of the three sites studied, Epicurious.com, BettyCrocker.com, and FoodNetwork.com, only Epicurious.com encourages meaningful communication between users and between users and designers. In many ways, Epicurious.com conceives of its …
