Growth And Respiratory Studies Of Saccaromyces Cerevisiae In The Presence Of Selenium, Robert M. Pengra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occurrence of selenium in certain soils of the United States and its detrimental effect upon livestock pastured on or fed forage from these areas has been well established. Selenium poisoning will not be reviewed here as several excellent reviews have been published (1, 2, 3). Studies on the metabolism of selenium by Sac-charomyces cerevisiae have been reported by Potter and Elvehjem (4), Lardy and Moxon (5), and Fels and Cheldelin (6, 7, 8). An attempt has been made in this thesis to repeat and enlarge on some of these studies. While this investigation may contribute information on the selenium …

The Econometer : A Heuristic Device For The Study Of Macro-Economics, Marshall Leopold Remund Jan 1951

The Econometer : A Heuristic Device For The Study Of Macro-Economics, Marshall Leopold Remund

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thorstein Veblen is said to have remarked, when asked how he was able to retain and recall such a wealth of information, that his mind contained a framework into which each new fact took its proper place, and recall merely amounted to examining the correct section of this framework To the student, the various economic concepts may come as a group of unrelated segments, none of which appears as a definite component of the whole. Concepts of money may not relate to concepts of goods; static views may be confused with dynamic, etc. If a framework for the ideas of …

A Survey Of The Microflora Obtained By Flushing The Normal Bovine Uterus, Johannah Jane Wulf Jan 1950

A Survey Of The Microflora Obtained By Flushing The Normal Bovine Uterus, Johannah Jane Wulf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since artificial insemination has become a reality and the potentialities of ova transfer are being investigated by several research workers, it seems reasonable to assume that some attention should be directed toward gathering information regarding the bacterial flora of the normal bovine uterus. Both artificial insemination and ova transfer require the insertion of foreign bodies or instruments into the uterus. When such instruments enter this organ, there is always the possibility of introducing various kinds of bacteria. Very little information is available regarding the pathogenicity of these bacteria in the bovine uterus. The possibility of abortion due to such pathogenic …

An Improved Method For The Determination Of Crude Fiber And Nitrogen Extract Of Feeds, Robert Alvin Wilcox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The crude fiber method in use today was originated in Germany by Henneberg and Stohmann (1) about 85 years ago and is known as the Weende method after the name of their experiment station. Their method consists of boiling a dried and ether extracted sample (about 1 gram) for 30 minutes in 200 ml. of a 1.25o/o sodium hydroxide solution. The residue is filtered off and washed free of alkali with hot water in a Gooch crucible prepared with a treated asbestos mat, dried in a 100 degree C oven, weighed, ashed and reweighed. The loss in weight upon ashing …
