A Comparison Of Two Smoking Reduction Treatments Under Conditions Designed To Be Interfering Or Not Interfering With The Smoking Habit., Gary Clive Salk 1944- May 1975

A Comparison Of Two Smoking Reduction Treatments Under Conditions Designed To Be Interfering Or Not Interfering With The Smoking Habit., Gary Clive Salk 1944-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thirty smokers were solicited from the Wichita, Kansas community via the newspaper and broadcast media for a stop-smoking project. The volunteers were assigned to one of two treatments: double smoking or a modification of Von Dedenroth's (1964) treatment. Each of these treatments was further divided into two groups. These groups were designed to provide high and low interference with the smoker's habit. No effect was observed for interference and it was observed that the experimental conditions probably did not permit the possibility of more than a small interference effect in either group. However, a significant effect for time and time …

The Effects Of Selected Pesticides On Ten Isolates Of Terrestrial Algae., Martha Scheer Salk 1945- May 1975

The Effects Of Selected Pesticides On Ten Isolates Of Terrestrial Algae., Martha Scheer Salk 1945-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ten algal isolates were obtained from soil into axenic culture and placed into defined media containing from 0 to 50 ppm of DDT, 2, 4-D,2,4,5-T, rotenone, or malathion (in two purities, 95 and 99%). For nine of the isolates, growth was measured photometrically every two weeks for a period of two months. Because of the twisted growth form, of the tenth isolate, a visual estimation was used to measure its growth over the same period of time. The results of the experiments in the light were as follows: 1) 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T were generally neutral in their growth effects. However, …

Effect Of Rhenium On Nitrogenase Activity Of Azotobacter Effect Of Rhenium On Nitrogenase Activity Of Azotobacter Vinelandiiinelandii, Stephen L.R. Erdody

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years the biochemical aspects of molybdenum have come under increasing investigation. One phase of the investigation has centered on the function of Mo in nitrogenase enzymes. One way to study the biochemical function of an element with another which may mimic its function. A vanadium containing mitrogenase from Aztobacter vinalaudii has been prepared which displays properties indicative of replacement of the Moo by V. Attempts to prepare an active tungsteu analog have been unsuccessful as W exhibits an inhibitory effect. It has been suggested that rhenium analogs of Mo-nitrogenase rather than V or W, should be more useful …

Salmonella Detection By Coulter Counter Volume Displacement Using Specific Antibody Coated Latex, Gita Chandulal Parikh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to determine whether this Coulter Counter for detection of Salmonella typhimurium cells. The latex particles are coated with a specific antiserum which reacts with the particulate antigen, Salmonella cells. An increase in the volume of latex antibody and Salmonella cells is detected by the Coulter Counter data and a teletype to plot the data shortens the time consumption. This method also has a potential to be completely automated.

Nitrogen Fixation And Other Microbial Activities In Soil On Antelope Range Station, Thomas J. Schneeweis Jan 1975

Nitrogen Fixation And Other Microbial Activities In Soil On Antelope Range Station, Thomas J. Schneeweis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of the symbiotic and non-symbiotic nitrogen fixing organisms on Antelope Range Station. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation is carried out by the native leguminous plants and the bacterial genus Rhizobium. This bacterium causes nodules to form on leguminous plants, and this symbiotic relationship is capable of utilizing gaseous nitrogen as a nitrogen source. Some experimentation was also done on a lichen found throughout the area studies. While speciation was not attempted, the lichen specimens were morphologically similar. These lichens also represented a symbiotic relationship, but in this case a nitrogen fixing blue-green algae formed a thallus with a …

The Infiltration Of A Lagoon Effluent For Final Waste Treatment, William B. Sherman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study and literature herein described was instituted for the purpose of examining the application of the stabilization pond effluent at Madison, South Dakota, to a soil type present in that area. The literature emphasized the importance of investigating the soil and water at each location because of variations witnessed in nearly every land application system that has been studied. With much assistance from officials of Madison, South Dakota, a lysimeter study was performed at the Madison lagoon by passing stabilization pond effluent through local soil,, collecting the resultant water to measure the rate of infiltration and analyzing the resultant …

Nitrogen Fixation By And Isolation Of Rhizobium Species From Native Legumes From A Tall Grass Prairie In South Dakota, Richard S. Steece

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is concerned primarily with the occurrence of nitrogen fixation in native legumes on burned vs. unburned sections of the tall grass prairie. It is also concerned with the isolation of the root nodule bacteria and their identification as rhizobia. Various other biological data such as plate counts a of soil bacteria and azotobacter plate counts along with the influence of abiotic factors such as temperature, soil moisture and organic matter were determined to see in a relationship could be detected with nitrogen fixation.

Integrated Numerical Simulation Of Drip Irrigation With Subsurface Drainage, James Ray Hoover Jan 1975

Integrated Numerical Simulation Of Drip Irrigation With Subsurface Drainage, James Ray Hoover

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A numerical method and model were developed to simulate soil moisture during steady-state and transient flow toward a tile drain. Intermittent application of water by drip irrigation and rainfall were simulated by use of finite difference approximation equations. No known analytical solution for these flow situations exists because of the complex mathematics describing unsaturated flow in the soil. The computer model is based on the electrical resistance network analog. The explicit finite difference equations were solved by the successive over-relaxation method for steady-state flow and by iteration for transient soil moisture flow. The computer program for the model consists of …

Propagation Of Selected Native Prairie Plants By Leaf Tissue Culture, Bernard Erlyn Ellis Jan 1975

Propagation Of Selected Native Prairie Plants By Leaf Tissue Culture, Bernard Erlyn Ellis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Preservation of our native prairie has long been neglected while extensive farming practices have reduced the native prairie to isolated areas of untillable land. These diminishing acres of prairie (Jenkins 1971, Tinker 1971) are our remaining link with the stable environment after man has disrupted the landscape to his advantage. The objective of this investigation was to produce plantlets of selected native prairie plants by leaf tissue culture and to eventually establish them in the field. In doing this it was necessary to study the characteristic of each species in both culture and field behavior. Twenty species were selected for …

Bentonite Or Sodium Bicarbonate In High-Concentrate Lamb Diets, Gerald Bruce Huntington Jan 1975

Bentonite Or Sodium Bicarbonate In High-Concentrate Lamb Diets, Gerald Bruce Huntington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A rapid change of ruminants from high-roughage diets, often used in background feeding programs, to high-concentrate diets used in the finishing phase tends to promote various digestive tract disorders. A major change in diets gradually made over a period of 3 to 4 weeks generally allows time for the rumen microflora to become adapted to the new conditions and minimizes digestive problems. However, performance during this period is often unsatisfactory. In the short-term feedlot finishing of ruminants for slaughter, the importance of profitable weight gains during the initial adaptation phase of the feeding period becomes relatively more important. Methods of …
