Effects Of Listeria Hemolysin On Mouse Embryos, Bruce A. Beck Jan 1977

Effects Of Listeria Hemolysin On Mouse Embryos, Bruce A. Beck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Listeriosis, an infectious disease of animals and man, is characterized by localized encephalitis, meningoencephalitis or abortion. In 1933 Listeria was first isolated from a human infant and in the late 1930’s, listeric abortion was first recorded in cattle and sheep. Not until 1950 was much attention given to perinatal listeric infection. Since then, uterine infection and abortion, stillbirth or neonatal death have been reported in virtually all species of animals. Statistics from the South Dakota Animal Research and Diagnostic Laboratory show that abortion cause by Listeria monocytogenes accounted for 48 per cent of the 164 reported cases of listeriosis over …

Bacterial Methylation Of Selenium, Wen-Ing Hwang Jan 1977

Bacterial Methylation Of Selenium, Wen-Ing Hwang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For several decades, excessive levels of selenium in feeds have been known to cause various toxic symptoms in livestock. Excessive selenium levels in feeds are the result of plants growing on soils which contain significant levels of selenium. The natural cycling process by which selenium becomes available appears to involve various chemical weathering processes. In addition, microbial action may play a direct or indirect role in rendering selenium soluble. (1). The extent to which microoganisms are involved in the natural cycling processes has been subject to considerable discussion. It has been demonstrated that mold can convert selenate or selenite to …

The study by Spector was based on a comparison of the count of favorable, unfavorable and neutral editorial items with vote on a municipal referendum. Spector found a high correlation between editorial position and the election outcome. The editorial policy of the Bridgeport daily newspaper was decidedly against the municipal referendum. Spector coded 23 unfavorable editorials (against the referendum), one neutral in content, and none favorable. Bridgeport voters voted 73 percent against the referendum. Voters in the 15 1/2 – county Oahe Conservancy Sub-District in 1960 voted overwhelmingly (85.5%) to establish the sub-district board to monitor and promote the Oahe …

Physiologic And Embryologic Studies Of The Yellow (Ay/A) Mouse, Gerald R. Cizadlo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mice heterozygous for the dominant AY gene have a yellow coat plus an altered metabolism which results in diverse physiologic characteristics including a greatly increased amount of carcass fat, a longer body and tail length, slightly more muscle mass, increased feed efficiency, increased susceptibility to spontaneous and induced tumor growth, and reproductive inefficiency in females. Homozygous AY animals die in utero. The mutation produces a lesion which is potentially valuable as an investigative· tool for the study of physiologic mechanisms and relationships of diverse metabolic pathways. Several experiments were performed to gain information concerning the AY effect. Rate of oxygen …

High-Rate Infiltration-Percolation Treatment Of Wastewater To Satisfy Effluent Requirements, Dayton H. Alsaker Jan 1976

High-Rate Infiltration-Percolation Treatment Of Wastewater To Satisfy Effluent Requirements, Dayton H. Alsaker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The treatment of wastewater to alleviate our freshwater needs and protect the environment at a reasonable cost is a major problem in the world today. The application of partially-treated wastewater to the land may be one method of solving this problem. Land application is neither a new concept, nor one that will solve all treatment problems, but it is likely to play an ever-increasing role in water pollution control planning. The Water Resources Institute at SDSU sponsored the project in its initial year of 1974. During this time much of the construction of the three infiltration percolation basins was completed. …

Enumeration And Low Temperature Storage Of Obligately Anaerobic Bacteria In Convenience Foods, Craig Edward Bremmon Jan 1976

Enumeration And Low Temperature Storage Of Obligately Anaerobic Bacteria In Convenience Foods, Craig Edward Bremmon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study was undertaken to determine the kinds and numbers of obligate anaerobes possibly present in various frozen and refrigerated commercial convenience foods. Also, known numbers of pathogenic species of obligate anaerobes were added to various convenience foods and stored at refrigeration and freezing temperatures to determine their die-off or loss in viability. The conditions investigated included the effects of different organisms, different foods, different temperatures, and various storage time periods. The results of this investigation demonstrate to food producers as well as consumers that the possibility does exist for the presence of non-sporeforming obligate anaerobes in frozen or …

Investigation On Several Aspects Of The Epidemiology And Control Of Yellow Leaf Spot On Wheat, Fred L. Bode Jan 1976

Investigation On Several Aspects Of The Epidemiology And Control Of Yellow Leaf Spot On Wheat, Fred L. Bode

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Yellow leaf spot, caused by Pyrenophora trichostoma (Fr.) Fckl., (Helminthosporium tritici repentis Died.) an ascomycetous fungus of widespread distribution, has played a minor role in the complex of foliar diseases afflicting Triticum species in South Dakota. However, with the introduction of cultural practices that leave large amounts of crop residue in the soil surface, the possibility exists that it may become a serious threat to wheat production in the Northern Great Plains region of the United States. This paper is a report of research on several aspects of the epidemiology and control of yellow leaf spot on wheat, with the …

Concerns About Journalism Education : A Content Analysis Of Selected Academic Journals And Trade Publications Published In 1955, 1965, And 1975, Michael J. Bugeja

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Journalism educators must consider an automated, technical news industry and burgeoning enrollments when tey review their educational programs. Traditionally, journalism educators are devoted to endowing their graduates with a good liberal arts education, besides training them for career work in the media. However, like all industries of our modern age, the news industry today is automated and more technically complex than ever. Training students for career work has also become more complex. Qualified instructors must teach students about the new machinery of mass communication and still devote enough time to liberal arts to make them conscientious journalists. Can journalism educators …

The research reported herein includes examination of 37 bovine E. coli strains to determine entero pathogenicity and the reliability of different assay methods, characterization of bovine LT ad comparison of bovine LT with porcine LT, comparison of three culture media to determine which one provides maximum ST production, and partial purification …

Investigation On Several Aspects Of The Epidemiology And Control Of Wheat Scab, Dale E. Miller Jan 1976

Investigation On Several Aspects Of The Epidemiology And Control Of Wheat Scab, Dale E. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The distribution of wheat scap is worldwide; in the U.S. the disease is the most prevalent in the central and eastern regions. The fungus attacks both spring and winter wheat, as well as many other Gramineous plants, including barley, oats, rice and some wild grasses. Among dicotyledon plants, the fungus causes root and crown disease of pea and carnation. With more wheat acreage each year, a build-up of the pathogen population is likely, and therefore pose a greater problem in the future. Today’s use of cultural practices that leave large amounts of surface residue in the fields may provide the …
