Purification And Characterization Of An Inhibitor Of Thymidine Uptake From Culture Supernatants Of Human Tonsil Lymphocytes, Abdolreza Zarnegar May 1987

Purification And Characterization Of An Inhibitor Of Thymidine Uptake From Culture Supernatants Of Human Tonsil Lymphocytes, Abdolreza Zarnegar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lymphocytes from human tonsils were cultured in the absence of serum for 3 days. In the presence of the concentrated culture supernatant the proliferative response of PBL, to con A, as measured by the uptake of ('3)H-tdr, was significantly reduced. The suppressor substance was referred to as SMAL (suppressor of mitogen activated lymphocytes). The estimated molecular weight of SMAL under nondenaturing conditions was 100,000-300,000. SMAL also suppressed the incorporation of ('3)H-tdr by a variety of mouse and human tumor cell lines. The activity of SMAL was sensitive to pronase and heating at 100(DEGREES)C for 30 minutes but insensitive to RNase. …

Abscisic Acid And Tissue Desiccation Alters Ribonuclease I Activity In Winter Barley Without Cold Acclimation, James Valentine Anderson Jan 1987

Abscisic Acid And Tissue Desiccation Alters Ribonuclease I Activity In Winter Barley Without Cold Acclimation, James Valentine Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research was initiated to obtain additional information about the causes for phenotypic variation of RNase I activity within winter barley cultivars. Unpublished data from this laboratory shows that antibody produced from RNase I obtained from two cultivars was mutually cross-reactive with antigen from the two cultivars of winter barley. The difference seen in RNase I activity between cultivars which can not be explained by the amount of RNase present may have similarities to that of inactive or incomplete forms of certain enzymes found in sec B mutants. Ferra-Novick et al. reported such sec B mutants as having early inactive …

Factors Affecting The Use Of Herbicides In Conservation Tillage, Pamela J. Hutchinson Jan 1987

Factors Affecting The Use Of Herbicides In Conservation Tillage, Pamela J. Hutchinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An alternative method of powering and guiding agricultural implements was described and tested. The system utilized a center pivot irrigation gantry as a position reference device for an electrically powered tool-frame. The system induced the tool-frame to follow a reference point on the irrigation gantry, while that point was incremented outward by a ground driven mechanism. The path followed by the tool-frame was that of an Archimedean spiral. A crop was planted and cultivated with the system, while evaluating the path for accuracy within operations, and repeatability between operations comparison of the overall energy efficiency and energy costs was made …

Characterization Of Monoclonal Antibodies To The Nebraska Strain Of Bovine Coronavirus, Jeanie Marie Lembke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop and characterize a panel of monoclonal ·antibodies specific for epitopes on the Nebraska strain of bovine coronavirus (BCV). The hybridomas were prepared by fusion of spleen cells from BALB/c mice hyperimmunized with BCV and from SP2/0Ml, NS-1, and P3-X63-Ag8.653 myeloma cell lines. Seven hybridoma clones were derived from the fusions. The immunoglobulin isotype IgGl was the most common antibody produced by the hybridomas. BALB/c mice were inoculated with hybridorna cells to produce ascitic fluids. Assays were performed on the ascitic fluids to determine which biological functions of the bovine coronavirus virions were …

"Voices In The Air" : The Story Of South Dakota Broadcaster Verl Thomson, Virginia J. Thomson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis follows Verl Thomson's 65 years in broadcasting in a generally chronological order. The significant contributions Thomson has made to the broadcast industry, especially in South Dakota, are examined. He pioneered in programming techniques and believes he developed the first radio station (in 1948) with completely recorded and pre-recorded programming, except for live news reporting. He was among the first to take broadcasts out of the studio for "man on the street" and "service club" interviews, to cover breaking stories from the scene and to broadcast from movie theatres and the screen. His earliest innovation was in 1924 when …

Studies On The Sterile-Insect Technique As A Means Of Controlling The Stable Fly, Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.), In A Beef Cattle Feedlot In Brookings, South Dakota, Michael Aguilar Catangui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The stable fly is usually the only biting, blood-sucking fly breeding in appreciable numbers in and around confined animal facilities. An average number of 50 flies per animal can reduce the weight gains of calves on a growing ration by 0.9 kilogram per day. At present, the level of 5 stable flies per front leg of confined beef cattle is used as an indicator of the economic threshold when control measures must be instituted. Since the immature stages of the stable fly develop in decaying organic matter, the most practical control measure has been sanitation or the proper storage and …

Growth And Proteolytic Activity Of Selected Psychrotrophic Bacteria In Whole Milk And Whole Milk Retentate, Ravinder Reddy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the last twenty years a number of membrane separation processes have evolved from laboratory scale, through pilot plant investigation, to full scale production units. One such process, ultrafiltration, has been found particularly useful in the dairy industry. Ultrafiltration uses porous polymeric membranes to separate molecules, principally on the basis of their molecular weight. In milk, fat, protein and associated substances are retained on the membrane. Permeate, which passes through the membrane contains mainly water, lactose and other low molecular weight substances. There is interest in ultrafiltration of milk because of it is potential importance in saving costs to both …
