Application Of Direct Powder Extrusion 3d Printing Technology In Printing Multi-Layer Structure Tablets, Honghe Wang Jan 2024

Application Of Direct Powder Extrusion 3d Printing Technology In Printing Multi-Layer Structure Tablets, Honghe Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is a widely used technique to manufacture drug delivery systems due to its precision, efficiency, and tailored prescription capability. Although fused deposition modeling (FDM) is the most commonly used technique in the pharmaceutical sciences, there are several limitations. Direct powder extrusion (DPE) 3D printing is a novel technique that was improved from traditional FDM. Material powder blends are fed into the cartridges of the 3D printer directly, without filament manufacturing, avoiding investigation and modification of filament property improvement. Chapter 1 introduces the fabrication of core-shell geometries for controlled-release tablets using direct powder extrusion 3D printing, demonstrating the …

Atomistic Simulation Of Pfas And Graphene: Interactions For Water Applications, Bashar Moufeed Awawdeh Jan 2024

Atomistic Simulation Of Pfas And Graphene: Interactions For Water Applications, Bashar Moufeed Awawdeh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The contamination of drinking water by per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) is a global issue. PFAS have been widely utilized in a variety of applications, including water and stain-resistant coatings, fire suppression foams, cosmetics, paints, and adhesives. They have been detected in soils and rivers globally due to their widespread use and resistance to degradation. The strong C–F bonds of PFAS make them exceedingly stable and hard to remove. In order to remediate PFAS contamination in the environment, it is essential to develop selective adsorbent materials that can effectively capture a wide range of PFAS structures. On April 10, …

Cationic Charge-Shifting Polymers As Improved Vectors For Nucleic Acid Delivery, Alexander Fortenberry Jan 2024

Cationic Charge-Shifting Polymers As Improved Vectors For Nucleic Acid Delivery, Alexander Fortenberry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates the development and application of charge-shifting polycations for gene delivery, focusing on their synthesis, characterization, and applications for in vitro mRNA delivery. Utilizing poly(2-vinyl-4,4-dimethylazlactone) (PVDMA), this study explores modifications with various reactive handles, such as alcohol, thiol, and amine groups, to create cationic amide-, ester-, and thioester-functionalized polycations. These modifications aim to exploit the charge-shifting capabilities of the polycations to form stable polyplexes with nucleic acids, promoting the efficient intracellular release of the genetic cargo.Initial studies first examine the charge-shifting properties of PVDMA-based polycations under different pH and temperature conditions. This work highlights the potential of these …

Formulation Development Of Cannabidiol Using Various Technologies As An Approach To Enhance Its Solubility And Oral Bioavailability, Iman Taha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a crystalline compound extracted from a high-CBD variety of the Cannabis sativa plant. It has various pharmacological effects, including antipsychotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-seizure, and anxiolytic properties. However, developing CBD formulations presents several challenges due to its high lipophilicity (log P of 6.3), poor water solubility (0.1 μg/mL), and significant first-pass metabolism, which results in low oral bioavailability, estimated at just 6%. Furthermore, research has demonstrated that CBD is susceptible to degradation from exposure to light, temperature, and oxidation during formulation. Currently, Epidiolex is the only commercially available preparation containing CBD that has been approved by the US-FDA for …

Bacterial Metallophores As Potential Agents In Heavy Metal Bioremediation, Mohammed Ahmed Jan 2024

Bacterial Metallophores As Potential Agents In Heavy Metal Bioremediation, Mohammed Ahmed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heavy metal pollution is a significant threat to human health and the environment. Bacteria have evolved diverse mechanisms to adapt to these pollutants, including the secretion of small molecules called metallophores. Bacterial metallophores are metabolites excreted in response to toxic metal stress to protect the bacterial cell. These small molecules have shown versatility in potential applications for the remediation of heavy metals. This research focuses on constructing a library of bacterial metallophores, which will facilitate the assessment of their metal-binding properties when exposed to different metals. The study has two main areas of investigation: Firstly, it involves isolating and characterizing …

Mississippi's America: Late Southern Writing On National Themes, Jacob Fennell Jan 2024

Mississippi's America: Late Southern Writing On National Themes, Jacob Fennell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project examines three texts each from three Mississippi authors working today: Kiese Laymon, Jesmyn Ward, and Mary Miller. These authors’ literary constructions of their home state and the South as a whole serve as critical, political frames for the United States. As a result, their work is well-served by the questions and methodology of New Southern Studies, a field actively invested in conceptions of the U.S. South as nonexceptional and lodged within greater geopolitical contexts. Indeed, the original call for New Southern Studies from Houston A. Baker, Jr. and Dana Nelson speaks to a problem of a false national …

On Inference-Time Adversaries In Object Detection Models, Soumil Datta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing use of AI in various applications, its ability to impact different communities is a crucial aspect to the advancement of humanity and technology. However, with its often unexplained properties, AI models could wreck havoc if loopholes are found. Adversarial attack algorithms have been shown to cause deep neural networks to fail on image classification and object detection tasks while being visually imperceptible to humans. Adversarial attacks cause out of distribution predictions and can cause the model to fail in unexpected ways.

Magnolia State Of Mind: Memory And Memorialisation In Mississippi, Cosmo Mcgee Jan 2024

Magnolia State Of Mind: Memory And Memorialisation In Mississippi, Cosmo Mcgee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the ways Mississippi has historically and contemporaneously crafted its collective memory through symbolism. Confederate memorial groups endeavoured to create a “Lost Cause” memory of the state’s Antebellum past, validating its White supremacist systems into the 1960s. With the violence of the Civil Rights era failing to stop integration, Mississippians would spend the next sixty years debating the best ways to represent the state’s history.

This work looks at three distinct manifestations of Mississippi’s memorial culture: the discussions around and changes to the state flag, the cultural and sporting atmosphere of the University of Mississippi (“Ole Miss”), and …
