Lateral Deflections And Stress Analysis Of Plate Girder Webs Subjected To Horizontal Loads, Hong-To Lam Jan 1971

Lateral Deflections And Stress Analysis Of Plate Girder Webs Subjected To Horizontal Loads, Hong-To Lam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a routine design of a plate girder bridge, the structural engineer is mainly concerned with the gross area of the flange due to bending and the gross area of the web due to shear. The web deflections and stresses due to horizontal loads resulting from the bracket during construction are not considered. The object of this thesis is to establish a mathematical solution which permits the prediction of structural behavior of the web for lateral loads. The web deflection and stress which occur as a result of using temporary construction brackets are primarily studied. In this investigation, a partial …

Food Habits Of Deer In The Southern Black Hills As Determined By The Point Technique, Theron E. Schenck Jan 1971

Food Habits Of Deer In The Southern Black Hills As Determined By The Point Technique, Theron E. Schenck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

White-tailed (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionius) were collected in 1968 and 1969 for a study of food habits. Rumen contents were analyzed by use of the point-analysis technique and weights. This is the first food habits study from the southern Black Hills and is necessary for proper deer management. To evaluate the suitability of the point technique for Black Hills vegetation, an artificial population was constructed from known weights of a forb, (Achillea lanulosa), grass (Oryzopsis asperfoliz), rose (Rosa sp.), kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). Each population was tested with 100-point trails and 200-point trials. …

A Study Of The Properties Of Parametric Programming, Arjun Kumar Batr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Programming is defined as the planning of activities for the sake of optimization. When linear constraints are ·assumed, together with a linear objective function, the optimization is defined as solving a linear programming problem. Linear programming was originally developed by Dantzig, Wood and (others for the U.S. Air Force. Since it was first published in 1947, it has been used widely in industrial as well as military situations.

Examples of specific exotic and straight forward applications of the linear programming technique can be found in text books, monographs and technical papers in the several fields in which it has been …

Classification Error Of Gaussian And Transformed Gaussian Variates, John E. Boyd Jan 1971

Classification Error Of Gaussian And Transformed Gaussian Variates, John E. Boyd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As indicated by the title and by the large proportion of pages devoted to the subject, transformation of variables is the primary topic of this thesis. The transformation of partially overlapping, correlated, two-dimensional, Gaussian distributed random variates to partially overlapping, independent, one-dimensional, Cauchy distributed random variates involves a reduction in dimensionality by one. Consequently, the equation defining the receiver is simplified, and the expressions for predicting the classification error are easier to formulate. The equation required to effect this transformation is z=Y1/Y2 , where Y1 , Y 2 are the standardized correlated Gaussian variates and z …

Analysis Of The Phase-Angle Method When Applied To An Actual Power System, Neal D. Drefke Jan 1971

Analysis Of The Phase-Angle Method When Applied To An Actual Power System, Neal D. Drefke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Determining the optimum generation schedule for a power system has been a basic problem in the electrical power industry for many years. The computations needed to determine the optimum generation schedule are becoming more complex and the need for greater accuracy increases, for a percentage savings represents total dollar savings on the ever-growing power systems. The most accurate method for determining the optimum generation schedule has come to be known as the phase-angle method. This method gives an optimum generation schedule for minimum fuel input where the fuel input is expressed in monetary units per unit of time. The only …

Partial Cooling Of The Environment In Free Stalls For Sows During Farrowing And Lactation, Thomas R. Gannon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many of the technological advances in the swine industry have resulted in increased capital requirements for buildings and equipment. This has made multiple farrowing, including summer farrowing, a near necessity. Hog farmers recognize the problem of sow mortality due to severe heat stress during periods of high ambient temperatures, and hog producers utilizing the free stall farrowing system recognize yet another problem, that of poor stall occupancy. Sows in this type of system tend to seek relief by leaving their stalls and lying in moist or breezy areas. This decreased stall occupancy has resulted in pigs being severely neglected, reduced …

A Theoretical Investigation Of Shock Wave Stability In Sonic Inlets, Assem A. Fathy Jan 1971

A Theoretical Investigation Of Shock Wave Stability In Sonic Inlets, Assem A. Fathy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A theoretical investigation of the shock wave stability applicable to "sonic" and supersonic inlets is presented. It is assumed that the boundary layer remains attached and that the principal sources of instability are the acoustic wave reflections from the shock wave and the face. The analysis is based on linearized one-dimensional flow theory and involves the solution of the wave equation with variable coefficients. The solution is obtained by series expansion. The results suggest that shock stability is mainly dependent on the shock strength and to a certain extent on the area distribution. For a given geometry, increasing the shock …
