Replication Of Bovine Parainfluenza-3 Virus In Bovine Alveolar Macrophages : Effects On Phagocytosis And Phagosome-Lysosome Fusion, Richard Allen Hesse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bovine parainfluenza-3 virus was found to replicate in alveolar macrophages in vitro. Cytopathic changes include spindle cell and giant cell formation, cellular detachment, and diffuse cell lysis progressing to total destruction of the monolayer. Direct immunofluorescent microscopy demonstrated viral antigens in greater than 90% of the cells three days after virus inoculation. Virus titers in culture supernatants increased by 6 a factor of 1.6 X 10 TCID50 by six days post inoculation. Phagocytosis assays showed no statistical differences of glass adherent cells in virus infected and control macrophages. When the number of glass adherent cells available for assay are taken …

Parasites Of Three Species Of South Dakota Lagomorphs, Glenn E. Kietzmann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The wild lagomorpha of North America have in the past been the subject of numerous parasitological examinations. Many of these surveys have been performed on cottontail rabbits, while comparatively fewer studies have been done on the jack rabbits. In South Dakota, parasite surveys have yet to be. completed on both cottontail rabbits and jack rabbits. The representatives of the Leporidae found in South Dakota are the white-tailed jack rabbit (Lepus townsendii campanius), the black tailed jack rabbit (Lepus californicus melanotis), the eastern cottontail rabbits Sylvilagus floridanus similis and Sylvilagus floridanus mearnsii), the desert cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus audubonii baileyi) and the …

Generation, Isolation And Assay Methods For Human Lymphocyte Mitogenic Factor, Thomas E. Seay Dec 1982

Generation, Isolation And Assay Methods For Human Lymphocyte Mitogenic Factor, Thomas E. Seay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Activated lymphocytes secrete many products including the lymphokine human lymphocyte mitogenic factor (HLMF). In preliminary experiments lymphocytes from peripheral blood and palatine tonsils were evaluated as possible sources of HLMF by evaluating their level of activation through screening their spontaneous and concanavalin A (con A)-induced blastogenic responses. Tonsil lymphocytes (TL) were found to have high spontaneous proliferation as compared to peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). Cells from both sources responded to con A by undergoing a typical blastogenic response. Because TL must be obtained septically, they are frequently cultured in the presence of the antimycotic agent, Amphotericin B (Am B). Since …

Tonsil Cell Products Which Modify In Vitro Proliferation Of Blood Lymphocytes, Thomas W. Hodge May 1982

Tonsil Cell Products Which Modify In Vitro Proliferation Of Blood Lymphocytes, Thomas W. Hodge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human palatine tonsil lymphocytes, when compared to peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL), were in an activated state even though there was no in vitro stimulation. When these tonsil lymphocytes were cultured in the absence of serum and polyclonal mitogens or antigens, the supernatant fluid often inhibited the proliferative response of target PBL to con A. The extent of this suppression ranged from 22% to 84%, and target cell viability was 90% or greater. There was no evidence for the presence of immunoglobulins or (alpha)2-macroglobulin in whole supernatant fluids. The suppressor was partially denatured at 80(DEGREES)C and was rendered completely inactive upon …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In an 18 mo study antibiotic containing mastitic milk was collected from infected cows and fermented naturally for a minimum of 7 days at ambient temperature. Fermentation of antibiotic containing mastitic milk increased titratable acidity from 0.209% to 0.650% and decreased pH from 7.02 to 5.48. Fermentation decreased crude protein from 3.7% to 3.5% and increased NPN (% TN) from 6.0% to 8.4%. Penicillin was detected at a concentration of 1.2 IU/ml in the first milk after treatment and 0.01 IU/ml when fermented. Species of pathogenic organisms isolated from fresh and fermented milk were Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, …

Embryonic Screening And Isolation Of Pine Needle Abortive Factors, Keith A. Dehaan Jan 1979

Embryonic Screening And Isolation Of Pine Needle Abortive Factors, Keith A. Dehaan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cattleman and veterinarian in the western states and Canada have noted the frequent occurrence of reproductive failure in cattle grazing ranges with tree stands of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). Consumption of the needles or buds from this tree have caused pregnant stock cows to abort or deliver weak calves. Retained fatal membranes are also frequently associated with pine needle abortion. Surveys conducted by the Black Hills Area Resource and Development Project in 1974 covering eight countries in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming estimate that at least 600 calves were lost through pine needle abortion in a three year period …

Hei-Gro Intravaginal Devices And Synovex-H Implants For Feedlot Heifers, James P. Goodman Jan 1979

Hei-Gro Intravaginal Devices And Synovex-H Implants For Feedlot Heifers, James P. Goodman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heifers gain at a slower rate, generally require more feed per unit gain and sell at a lower market price than steers. Due to the fact that heifer carcasses are commonly fatter and contain more waste trim than steers, the value of a heifer carcass is routinely less than that of a steer carcass of comparable yield and quality grade. In the past, the ways in which the livestock operator could increase his profit from feeding heifers were limited. Differential cost of feeder heifers versus steers and feed cost were the major criteria involved in his decision of whether or …

Reasons Why Cows Were Removed From The Sdsu Fairy Herd 1. Discriminant Analysis To Classify Cows With Or Without Reproductive Problems, Fred Tidemann Jan 1978

Reasons Why Cows Were Removed From The Sdsu Fairy Herd 1. Discriminant Analysis To Classify Cows With Or Without Reproductive Problems, Fred Tidemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the keys to financial success in the dairy business is the ability of management to detect herd problems and correct them instead of culling cows. It is well known that the average productive life of the dairy cow is less than 4 yr, which is short compared with her potential life. Involuntary removal of cows causes economic loss directly as a result of its effect on yearly milk production, increased replacement cost, and indirectly because the potential selection differential is reduced with premature loss of high producing cows. The degree of culling is related to important economic considerations …

Influence Of Season On Immunoglobulin Absorption And Status In Young Calves, Lynn Maureen Boyd Jan 1977

Influence Of Season On Immunoglobulin Absorption And Status In Young Calves, Lynn Maureen Boyd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A high rate of calf mortality can represent a major economic loss to the dairy farmer. Despite increased knowledge in calf rearing, mortality rates of 10 to as high as 25% are not uncommon. The loss of heifer calves alone cost dairymen an estimated $81 million in 1975. This figure does not include the additional costs of extra labor, medication and veterinary expenses, and the loss of genetic potential. The most critical period for calf survival is the first 2 to 3 wk of life. During this time, the calf depends upon colostral immunoglobulins absorbed during the first 24 h …

Effects Of Listeria Hemolysin On Mouse Embryos, Bruce A. Beck Jan 1977

Effects Of Listeria Hemolysin On Mouse Embryos, Bruce A. Beck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Listeriosis, an infectious disease of animals and man, is characterized by localized encephalitis, meningoencephalitis or abortion. In 1933 Listeria was first isolated from a human infant and in the late 1930’s, listeric abortion was first recorded in cattle and sheep. Not until 1950 was much attention given to perinatal listeric infection. Since then, uterine infection and abortion, stillbirth or neonatal death have been reported in virtually all species of animals. Statistics from the South Dakota Animal Research and Diagnostic Laboratory show that abortion cause by Listeria monocytogenes accounted for 48 per cent of the 164 reported cases of listeriosis over …

Bionomics Of Mallophaga Of Sharp-Tailed Grouse In South Dakota, Major L. Boddicker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ecologies of chewing lice (Insecta:Mallophaga) which parasitize sharp-tailed grouse, Pedioecetes phasianellus, were studied in southwestern South Dakota from 1964 to 1967. Five hundred twenty-eight hens, cocks and chicks were collected and examined for louse damage. Louse populations were monitored each month from December, 1964, to September, 1967. Five louse species which infested grouse in the study area were Goniodes nebraskensis Carriker, Amyrsidea megalosoma Overgaard, Lagopoecus perplexus Kellogg and Chapman, Goniocotes chrysocephalus and Lipeurus maculosis Clay. Goniodes nebraskensis fed on feather parts and skin debris and was found to have seasonally fluctuating populations. Cocks carried peak populations of 250 lice/host …

Soluble Proteins And Lipoproteins Of Legumes In Relation To Bloat, Loren M. Rommann Jan 1970

Soluble Proteins And Lipoproteins Of Legumes In Relation To Bloat, Loren M. Rommann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Percent Fraction 1 protein, total soluble protein, and the lipoproteins of birdsfoot trefoil, white clover, and four varieties of alfalfa (Teton, travois, vernal, ladak) were investigated in relation to ruminant bloat using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The plants were grown in a growth chamber under two daylengths and harvested at the bloom, bud and prebud stages of growth. No statistical difference in percent fraction 1 protein, measured as a percentage of the total soluble protein, could be detected among birdsfoot trefoil and three varieties of alfalfa. Both birdsfoot trefoil and teton alfalfa were significantly lower in percent Fraction 1 protein than …

Isolation An Characterization Of The Virus Of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Ehd) Of Deer, Hsing Kuei Liu Jan 1970

Isolation An Characterization Of The Virus Of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Ehd) Of Deer, Hsing Kuei Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The name "epizootic hemorrhagic disease" (EHD) of deer was first given by Shope et al. in 1955 because of the occurrence of the hemorrhagic disease in large epizootic_ proportions and because of its pathological features. It was also determined by them that the causative agent for the disease is a virus. Difficulties in studying the causative agent have been encountered because no host system other than the deer itself was available to support replication or detect the virus. However, isolation of the New Jersey strain of EHD virus was accomplished by Mettler et al. in 1962 using newborn mice and …

Feedlot Adaptation And Shrinkage Of Feeder Cattle, Robert E. Revell Jan 1968

Feedlot Adaptation And Shrinkage Of Feeder Cattle, Robert E. Revell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past 10 to 20 years the cattle feeding industry has undergone many changes. A number of changes in environmental factors and management practices have created problems in the adaptation of newly arrived cattle to their new environment. Major problems are the high incidence of diseases resulting in extensive treatments, slow gaining cattle during the early stages in the feedlot, and costly death losses. All result in narrowed profit margins. Cattle are being sent to feedlots at an earlier age. The practice of holding cattle until they are mature or selling them as grass-fats has declined. Feedlot operators want …
