The Effects Of Geographic Isolation And Anthropogenic Activity On The Social Behavior Of Caribbean Green Monkeys., Rose Amrhein
The Effects Of Geographic Isolation And Anthropogenic Activity On The Social Behavior Of Caribbean Green Monkeys., Rose Amrhein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeaus) arrived to the Caribbean with the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Since then, they have experienced unique environments to those of their native ranges in West Africa. Additionally, recent taxonomic changes within the genus make previous knowledge about the species hard to determine to be accurate. In this dissertation, I both assess some of the effects the island environment may have had on monkey behavior as well as build on the understanding of their vocal communication across three islands: Barbados, St. Kitts, and St. Martin. In chapter one, I investigate how human activity in Barbados affects …
Dirty Dianthus: A Review Of The Microbotryum-Dianthus Plant Pathogen System., Roxanne Kaaren Hayes
Dirty Dianthus: A Review Of The Microbotryum-Dianthus Plant Pathogen System., Roxanne Kaaren Hayes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microbotryum dianthorum is a species complex of smut fungi that act as biotrophic plant pathogens of Dianthus flowering plants. This group of pathogenic fungi are situated within a larger group of fungi that act as biotrophic plant pathogens, some of which are responsible for extensive crop loss in our agricultural system. These pathogens are distinct from other Microbotryum species in their ability to infect not only a single host, but multiple hosts. Their unique ability to parasitize several plant hosts may unlock potential clues about the potential for emergent infection disease in crop systems. Previous work has established that these …

Nonlinear Power Function Model Changepoint Detection., Jacob Steven Townson
Nonlinear Power Function Model Changepoint Detection., Jacob Steven Townson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Most work surrounding changepoint analysis focuses on linear models. This dissertation explores changepoint detection in nonlinear power function models, specifically focusing on models where the constant multiplier and power are the parameters to be estimated in addition to the changepoint parameter. The study assumes an asymptotic framework as the number of observations approaches infinity. The study explores various model fitting algorithms, and decides to employ the Newton-Raphson method for parameter estimation, with a custom implementation developed to optimize the process. The research first establishes the strong consistency of estimators for the model without a changepoint. Building on this result, consistency …

Through employing embodiment theory, along with gender and …
Sars-Cov-2 Modulates Pla2g2d/Pgd2 Signaling To Manipulate Host Immune Response To Increase Disease Severity., Dante L. Hamiel
Sars-Cov-2 Modulates Pla2g2d/Pgd2 Signaling To Manipulate Host Immune Response To Increase Disease Severity., Dante L. Hamiel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Previous studies suggested that SARS-CoV-2 infection could cause diverse immune and metabolic dysregulations, although the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In addition, viruses may escape the immune response by modulating cellular metabolism, mitochondria, and protein functions indicating that immune or metabolic components may represent novel targets for anti-viral strategies. However, whether immune and metabolic disorders interact or affect each other waits to be determined. On the other hand, previous investigations identified the critical roles of a cell membrane-bound phospholipase PLA2G2D and its downstream products PGD2 in regulating the metabolism and inflammation in respiratory system. More importantly, …

Contesting The City Through Sustainability Discourse: A Joint Archival And Interview Analysis Of City Planning In Louisville, Kentucky., Calvin Grant
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sustainability is a part of a global discourse cast as a universal, technocratic solution to the climate crisis in need of a receptive public and active local adaptation. In many cases, language espousing sustainable development ideals and policy implementation promotes a perspective of scientific neutrality that overlooks socio-politically grounded discourses. This joint archival and interview-centered discourse analysis demonstrates that official sustainability discourse in Louisville’s Comprehensive Plan 2040 was produced through a carefully moderated consensus among planners and select stakeholders. Such consensus prioritizes the perspectives and agency of policy experts, business leaders, and others who have “recognized speech” of authority, while …

Engineering Solutions For The Transplant Supply Gap: Social Network Analysis, Artificial Intelligence, And Optimization In Living Kidney Donation., Joshua Nielsen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Kidney transplantation is the gold standard for treating end-stage renal disease, yet over 90,000 patients remain on the transplant waitlist. This dissertation introduces engineering-driven solutions to help reduce the transplant supply gap by addressing three challenges: illicit trafficking, donor recruitment, and evaluation inefficiencies. First, we model illicit organ trafficking networks using social network analysis. We demonstrate that targeting transplant clinics alone is insufficient to disrupt operations. Instead, disrupting the network requires detaining brokers who organize behind-the-scenes logistics—offering a more effective strategy for intervention. Second, we seek to identify a latent population of potential living donors who face barriers such as …

Exploring Young Adults’ Implicit Theories Of Emotion And Emotion Dysregulation On Parental Emotion Socialization And Internalizing Symptomology, Daryl Parungao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research regarding emotion socialization suggests parents’ responses towards their children’s negative emotions, which may be characterized as either emotion dismissive or emotion coaching behaviors, are associated with children’s well-being into adulthood. A heuristic model of emotion socialization suggests that child-level factors related to emotion processing may moderate this association (Eisenberg, 1998), which warrants further examination when considering relevant risk factors for mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. This dissertation explored how parent emotion socialization responses interact with young adults’ beliefs about the controllability of emotions and their difficulties with emotion regulation with regard to their impact on young …
