Brain glial mechanisms, specifically, microglial α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have been proposed as an important target for MDD associated with neuroinflammation. We hypothesized that microglial α7 nAChRs positive allosteric modulator (PAM) has an important role in the regulation of behavioral, cellular, biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying …

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Foliar Insecticide And Soybean Seed Treatment In South Dakota, Cole Dierks Jan 2019

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Foliar Insecticide And Soybean Seed Treatment In South Dakota, Cole Dierks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of cover crops and no-till practices are important for the conservation of both soil and moisture in South Dakota. However, it is unknown if these practices impact the efficacy of insecticide seed treatments. In soybean, insecticide seed treatments are used prophylactically to prevent potential crop losses from early season insect pests. The prophylactic use of any management strategy increases the likelihood for selection pressure and also represents unnecessary input costs. The purpose of the research conducted for Chapter 2 was to determine the impact that tillage systems, cover crops and planting populations have on the efficacy of insecticide …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cyanide and nitrosoamines (NAs) are ubiquitous compounds, found in our food and water, either by natural process or through man-made activities. The toxicity of cyanide is exerted by its ability to inhibit metalloenzymes such as cytochrome c oxidase, causing concomitant cascades of biochemical effects such as lactic acidosis, inhibition of ATP production, respiratory seizure, and potential death. Nitrosoamines, on the other hand, undergo biotransformation (metabolic activation in cytochrome P450) in the body to produce unstable intermediates that alkylate DNA, causing mutations, and leading to carcinogenesis. In order to further the advancement of a promising cyanide, cobinamide (Cbi), an LC-MS-MS method …

Diversifying Cornfields By Interseeding Cover Crops: Practical Implications And The Response Of Invertebrate Communities, Michael Bredeson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The lack of suitable habitat conditions for beneficial organisms in simplified agroecosystems leads to unstable invertebrate communities and overreliance on chemical control of herbivores. It is possible to manage pest populations without agrichemicals by manipulating farmland so that herbivores are impaired by plant-driven bottom-up and enemy-driven top-down antagonisms. Interseeding cover crops between established crop rows is a method used by farmers to improve habitat suitability for natural enemies and hinder host-finding, feeding and movement by herbivores. Here I address three important research gaps related to interseeding cover crops. A calcium carbonate seed coating, used to improve seed-broadcasting efficiency, was tested …

Intra-Day Solar Irradiance Forecasting For Remote Microgrids Using Hidden Markov Model, Abhilasha Bajracharya Jan 2019

Intra-Day Solar Irradiance Forecasting For Remote Microgrids Using Hidden Markov Model, Abhilasha Bajracharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate solar irradiance forecasting is the key to accurate estimation of solar power output at any given time. The accuracy of this information is especially crucial in diesel-PV based remote microgrids with batteries to determine the set points of the batteries and generators for their optimal dispatch. This, in turn, is related directly to the overall operating cost because both an overestimation and an underestimation of the irradiance means additional operating costs for either suddenly ramping up the backup resources or causing under-utilization of the available PV power output. Accurately predicting the solar irradiance is not an easy task because …

Efficiency Of Standardized Ileal Digestible Lysine Utilization For Whole Body Protein Deposition In Pregnant Gilts And Sows During Early, Mid And Late Gestation, Christian Daniel Ramirez-Camba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The total daily amino acid (AA) requirements for pregnant sows are based of Lys which is the first-limiting AA in swine diets. The SID Lys requirements are estimated by the NRC (2012) gestating sow model as the sum of those required for maintenance and protein retention divided by the efficiency of SID Lys utilization. The NRC (2012) gestating sow model assumed AA efficiency is constant across stages of gestation and parities; however, this does not reflect the change in metabolic demand of various age sows at different stages of gestation. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of …

The Effect Of Proteolytic Queues On Antibiotic Tolerance And Persistence Cells Population In Escherichia Coli, Alawiah Abualrahi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A major contributing factor to the abundance of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and failed antibiotic treatment is survival due to antibiotic tolerance and persistence. Antibiotic tolerance is a widespread phenomenon that enables cells to survive treatment without carrying a resistance gene. This phenomenon renders antibiotic treatments less effective and facilitates antibiotic resistance. We are particularly interested in proteases, responsible for degradation of proteins, because of their known relationship to tolerance and persistence. Here, we examine the effects of proteases and antibiotic survival using queueing theory, in which one type of customer competes for processing by servers, that has traditionally been applied to …
