A Study Made To Determine The Muscular Fitness Status Of A Group Of Sioux Indian And Caucasian Children As Determined By The Krausreber Test Of Minimum Muscular Fitness, Melvin E. Logterman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The American people as a whole were aroused to the necessity of exercise and physical fitness when they became acquainted with the statistics on the men rejected from military service during World War II. Since World War II, increased interest in physical fitness has become evident. Several recent conferences, on the national level, have been held to discuss the subject of physical fitness of our youth. These conferences have been brought about, mainly, as a result of the findings revealed by the Kraus-Weber Test of Minimum Muscular Fitness. In South Dakota, one could question the physical fitness status of the …

A Survey Of The Value Of The Homemaking Curriculum In South Dakota With Implications For Revision, Carol Siemann Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Homemaking education is no longer “cooking sand sewing” but is a program directed toward the goal of helping students to become happy, responsible family members. From this goal stems the family centered approach to teaching. It relates the curriculum to the realities of family living by using family life situations for learning experiences. The teacher is no longer the authority on material to be learned. To develop the family centered program, parents and students are cooperating with teachers in curriculum planning. A Guide for Developing a Homemaking Curriculum in Junior and Senior High Schools of South Dakota, published in …

A Case Study Report Of 29 South Dakota State College Freshman Men With Low Physical Fitness Indices, Jack K. Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the last quarter century the life of the agrarian people of South Dakota has changed from one of heavy physcial activity to one which could be described, in comparison, as sedentary. The children have quickly become attracted to this easier life and have progressively made life even less active, physically. It is common knowledge that growing child must have strenuous activity for complete biological development. It is the responsibility of the school to provide the child with a complete education which takes care of his physical, social, emotional as well as his mental needs. As one looks in on …

A Geographical Study Of Housefly Resistance, Vernon H. Lee Jan 1957

A Geographical Study Of Housefly Resistance, Vernon H. Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Entomologists and geneticists have been interested in the resistance shown by houseflies, Musca domestica L., to DDT. The widespread use of this insecticide immediately following the Second World War, and the subsequent wide-spread resistance to its effect by several species of insects has stimulated much research involving the chemical and genetic roles in resistance. In 1950 and 1951, attention was called to the poor control of houseflies achieved by DDT at Brookings, South Dakota. Study results indicated a very high level of resistance. In 1954, further testing for resistance was done. Having knowledge of the level of resistance in the …

Reaction Of Certain Diploid And Tetraploid Alfalfas To Some Phytopathogens Including The Blackstem Disease, Harry Geise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alfalfa in South Dakota as in other parts of the United States and the world is adversely affected by a disease known as Blackstem. This disease is induced by one or more fungi or bacteria whose abundance depends as much on the high susceptibility of the current alfalfa varieties as on the weather. Differences in plant susceptibility to one of these microorganisms, Ascochyta imperfect, has already been shown to occur within and between alfalfa varieties or strains. Reitz working in Kansas obtained F1’s between highly resistant and highly susceptible plants that were intermediate in reaction to this fungus, and in …

Comparative Effects Of Two Different Physical Education Programs Upon The Physical Fitness And Motor Educability Of Ninth And Tenth Grade Boys, Charles Russell Reynolds Jan 1957

Comparative Effects Of Two Different Physical Education Programs Upon The Physical Fitness And Motor Educability Of Ninth And Tenth Grade Boys, Charles Russell Reynolds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The matter of being physically fit is not just that of building muscles. Although strengthening exercises are a very important part of a developmental program, the results attained for the individual go beyond this more apparent phase of the process. Along with increasing strength, other such benefits include increased organic vigor, stamina, poise, and an improved mental outlook. Many investigations during the past twenty-five years have substantiated these assumptions. Thus, one of the physical educator’s prime duties is to increase his pupils’ muscular strength, which is basic to all other growth and development. The importance of physical fitness was brought …

The Effects Of An Eight Week Developmental Physical Education Program On Physical Fitness Index And Certain Cardiovascular Factors Of Freshman Male Students, James Riley Jan 1957

The Effects Of An Eight Week Developmental Physical Education Program On Physical Fitness Index And Certain Cardiovascular Factors Of Freshman Male Students, James Riley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to the various definitions, physical fitness is a qualitative element composed of many factors; so in order to properly evaluate physical fitness, it would be necessary to measure all of the various factors. It is generally conceded that a test is needed that will be sensitive to the effects upon the organism of lack of exercise, of faculty health habits, and of organic drains. The Roger’s Physical Fitness Test was intended to be such a measure. This test is based upon the assumption that to rate well, one must have efficiently functioning organs and well-developed muscles; however, the relative …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Part I. Studies of the effect of dietary carbohydrate and fat.--Part II. Studies of the effect of adding various fractions of linseed oil meal to the diets, including chemical work on the fractions.

The selenium poisoning problem has attracted much attention in Wyoming and South Dakota. In these two states, the damage to farm animals has been of great concern to farmers and ranchers in certain areas. The search for control measures against selenium poisoning has involved the testing of purified chemical compounds and natural food products. Purified chemical compounds found to be somewhat effective against selenium poisoning have been …

Locker And Shower Room Facilities Used For Physical Education In Class "A" High Schools In South Dakota, Arthur T. Jansen Jan 1956

Locker And Shower Room Facilities Used For Physical Education In Class "A" High Schools In South Dakota, Arthur T. Jansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a survey of the existing locker and shower room facilities for physical education in the larger high schools in South Dakota. The state of South Dakota does not require physical education in its public elementary or secondary schools, but leaders in the field are working toward a goal whereby physical education for all pupils from the first through the twelfth would be required. If such a requirement is made of the present school systems in South Dakota, will the schools be able to handle the increased load, and are they now adequately constructed to handle their present load? …

Present Practices In Grading Boys' Physical Education In Secondary Schools Of Minnesota, North Dakota, And South Dakota, Wayne E. Sinning Jan 1956

Present Practices In Grading Boys' Physical Education In Secondary Schools Of Minnesota, North Dakota, And South Dakota, Wayne E. Sinning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very little research has been done on grading in physical education. Most of the work on the subject is composed of methods and suggestions which authors have developed through their own experience. Very little has been done to determine the needs of the instructor in the classroom situation and to adopt procedures to these needs. These needs arise from many different forces at work affecting the methods the instructor uses. Some of these forces are present procedures, the status and credit given to physical education in the individual schools and the present philosophy of the instructors and school administrators. This …

The subject was in good health and reasonably sound physical condition.

Investigations Of Methyl Donors And Linseed Oil Meal In Alleviating Selenium Poisoning, Eriks Leitis Jan 1956

Investigations Of Methyl Donors And Linseed Oil Meal In Alleviating Selenium Poisoning, Eriks Leitis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of selenium poisoning has been extensively reviewed. Although a considerable amount of work has been done on this problem, the mechanism of the toxic action of selenium is not understood. This work has undertaken as part of an effort to determine the nature of the protective effect of certain substances against selenium poisoning, in that this might aid in understanding its toxic action. The conflicting findings concerning the effectiveness of methionine against selenium poisoning were obtained with a variety of diets and under a variety of other experimental conditions. It appeared, therefore, that certain unknown factors or conditions …

Differential Reaction Of Two Varieties Of Sorghum To Colchicine Treatment, Glenn Francis Atkinson Jan 1956

Differential Reaction Of Two Varieties Of Sorghum To Colchicine Treatment, Glenn Francis Atkinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The induction of diploid true-breeding mutants by colchicine treatment of a true-breeding variety of sorghum vulgare Pers. Has been reported by Franzke and Ross (9); Ross, Franzke and Schuh (22); and others (7,10). It has been suggested that such mutant plants might result from point mutations made homozygous by a somatic reduction of the chromosomes followed by a doubling of the chromosome number in a cell which organized a growing point after the original one had been inactivated during c-tumor formation. Observations made during the course of routine work with sorghum indicated that after colchicine treatment some varieties produced tetraploids …
