A Survey Of School Districts In Boyd County, Nebraska, 1965-1966, Robert Stuerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today, due to the ever-increasing educational requirements laid down by states and the increasing costs of education, many of the smaller districts have either been forced to close down or are lacking in one or more of the state requirements and are on the verge of losing their accreditation and ultimately their school. Dennis M. David made a survey of 135 citizens in five mid-western states and showed that only one-fourth of the people were aware that the purpose of reorganization of school districts is to provide better education. It has been shown through surveys of Nebraska County high school …

Planned Educational Progress In The Mitchell Public School System, Donald Jesse Mclean

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is but one major purpose for the existence of the public schools in the American society. That purpose is to provide the best possible education for the nation’s children. Several elements are required to make this successful program a reality within a given community. The school board and administration must provide for at least three important ingredients, the first being a system of well-designed school buildings. The second is the employment of well- prepared teachers and the third is a well-planned curriculum. To accomplish a successful program it is necessary to continually evaluate all three areas. In doing so …

Isolation Of Anti-Tuberculosis Agent From Korean Soils Containing Decayed Organic Materials, Jong Myong Kim Feb 1967

Isolation Of Anti-Tuberculosis Agent From Korean Soils Containing Decayed Organic Materials, Jong Myong Kim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tuberculosis is still one of the major threats to the health of mankind. Attempts to find suitable chemotherapeutic agents for tuberculosis date almost from the time that Koch (1, 2, 3) announced the discovery of the etiological agent of this disease. The earlier work has been reviewed by Long (3, 18). The modern chemotherapeutic era, however, began when Rich and Follis (3, 29) demonstrated that sulfa-nilamide exerted a light suppressive effect on the course of experimental tuberculosis in guinea pigs. Since that time, numerous investigators (1, 2, 4-14, 16-18, 29, 36, 39, 41-44) have attempted to find chemotherapeutic agents suitable …

Nitrate--Urea Interrelationships In Sheep, Donald Wayne Hoar Feb 1967

Nitrate--Urea Interrelationships In Sheep, Donald Wayne Hoar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitrates are absorbed from the soil by plants and serve as a source of nitrogen which is converted into protein and other nitrogen containing compounds. Plants usually contain relatively small amounts of nitrate because it is converted into other nitrogenous compounds rapidly after being absorbed. Under certain conditions some plants may accumulate fairly high concentrations of nitrate. While these high concentrations are not toxic to the plant, animals consuming them may sometimes show symptoms of nitrate toxicity. Nitrate is not very toxic, but it is readily converted into nitrite which causes toxicity. Nitrate is not very toxic, but it is …

The Effects Of Arsenical Compounds On Growth And Enzymes Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae, M. L. Halling Feb 1967

The Effects Of Arsenical Compounds On Growth And Enzymes Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae, M. L. Halling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years people have equated arsenic or compounds containing arsenic with poison. Inorganic arsenic compounds are used as chemotherapeutic agents as well as poisons. Organic arsenicals were introduced at the start of this century launching modern chemotherapy. The introduction of antibiotics in the 1940’s virtually replaced organic arsenicals in chemotherapy. Solutions of inorganic arsenic compounds are used as tonics for animals and to finish animals for show. Because arsenicals are excreted by animals in much the same structure as they are consumed and arsenite prevents both putrefaction and growth, it is possible the decomposition of animal excreta will be …

Supplemental Vitamins In Feed And Water For Growing And Finishing Pigs And Growing Rats, Vernon L. Fritz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vitamins in swine diets have become more important in recent years as swine producers have changed to the confinement method of rearing pigs. When confined, swine are more likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies, especially a deficiency of vitamins. However, with greater knowledge of nutrition and establishment of vitamin requirements, swine producers are now able to include the essential nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins) and feed additives in a completely mixed diet. This method of feeding swine has been widely accepted since completely mixed diets support excellent gains and feed utilization; however this method of feeding is not …

The Concept Of The Flapper In The Early Writings Of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Janet Foster Carroll

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A curious, but important, relationship exists between the social history of a particular age and the imaginative literature of the same period. The writings in both areas become major sources of knowledge about that era for readers in future generations. The following thesis is the outgrowth, in part, of this interest – an examination of the concept of the flapper in the early works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. For years Fitzgerald has been regarded as the chronicler of his Age. As early as 1920 he was heralded by the public as “Spokesman for the Younger Generation,” and although he seems …

South Dakota had a greater number of local governments per 100,000 inhabitants than any other state in the United States in 1962.1 This fact suggests the existence of economic inefficiency in the operation of local governments in South Dakota. The people of South Dakota are demanding more services form their governments in South Dakota. The people of South Dakota are demanding more services from their governments. Governmental functions are becoming more expensive, partly because of providing more and higher quality services, and thus the taxes are increasing.2 Taxes are of constant concern, perhaps greater concern than usual, among the people …

Comparison Of Two Cultures For Use In Preacidified Skimmilk For Cottage Cheese Manufacture, Daryl D. Boddicker Jan 1967

Comparison Of Two Cultures For Use In Preacidified Skimmilk For Cottage Cheese Manufacture, Daryl D. Boddicker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Curd formation in a cultured dairy product is brought about by the addition of a bacterial culture capable of producing lactic acid from lactose. The primary function of this culture is to produce sufficient lactic acid to cause coagulation of the caseinate system of skimmilk. A secondary function of the culture is the production of flavor compounds considered to be desirable in these products. The flavor compounds produced by the normal growth of citric acid fermenting organisms are water soluble, and are largely removed during washing of the Cottage cheese curd. Therefore, flavor compounds are normally added to the cheese …

A Study Of Seventh And Eighth Grade Home Economics Programs In South Dakota With Implications For Curriculum Development, Lacquita Olson Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the basic requirements of curriculum building is a clear and concise understanding of social, economic and technological developments which influence the American way of life. In fact curriculum revision is needed because of these rapid changes which are often so rapid that the educator has difficultly interpreting their implications. A first step in curriculum reorganization according to Trump and Baynham involves an analysis of what is being tought and studied by students.9 It was with this thought in mind that the writer developed a questionnaire which was sent to teachers in the public schools teaching homemaking in the …
