Aeration Of Stockade Lake, South Dakota, Larry C. Vanray Jan 1969

Aeration Of Stockade Lake, South Dakota, Larry C. Vanray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Intermittent aeration of Stockade Lake (2,470 acre feet) during the summers of 1967 and 1968 temporarily altered the thermal profile and phytoplankton density. Continual aeration for 48 hours in the deepest portion of this eutrophic lake produced epilmnetic cooling, hypolimnetic warming and apparent reduction of algal populations at three sampling stations in various parts of the lake. Dye, released at the aeration site, was found at all depths throughout the lake after 461/2 hours aeration. Air bubbles, rising from diffuser blocks near the lake bottom, carried cold, hypolimnetic water to the surface at a rate of 4.7 million gallons per …

Ecological And Trophic Distribution Of Pesticides In Lack Poinsett, South Dakota, Michael Robert Hannon Jan 1969

Ecological And Trophic Distribution Of Pesticides In Lack Poinsett, South Dakota, Michael Robert Hannon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ecological and trophic distributions of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in Lake Poinsett, South Dakota were studies. Components of the ecosystem analyzed were water, bottom sediment, zooplankton, benthic algae, crayfish, aquatic insects and fish. Concentrations of aldrin, DDD, DDE, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, methoxychlor, and toxaphene were determined by gas chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. DDT and its metabolites, DDD and DDE, were the highest residues detected in all trophic levels examined. Heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrine, dieldrin, and lindane were present in the majority of sample types, while neither endrin nor methoxyshlor was detected above analytical confidence limits in any …

Antigenic Relationships Of Diptheroids Isolated From Cattle And Swine, Glenn Elwyn Urevig Feb 1968

Antigenic Relationships Of Diptheroids Isolated From Cattle And Swine, Glenn Elwyn Urevig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gram positive, club shaped, pleomorphic bacilli with or without catalase activity are frequently isolated from abscessed clinical materials (Smith and Bodily, 1968). These organisms may be aerobic to microaerophilic to anaerobic (Wilson and Miles, 1964) and are usually regarded as Diphtheroids. Diphtheroids have been defined by Burdon (1958) as members of the genus Corynebacterium other than the diphtheria bacillus Burrows et al . (1963) state that diphtheroids are "microorganisms morphologically similar to and frequently indistinguishable from the diphtheria bacillus." Biever (1967) included as diphtheroid all of the organisms morphologically similar to the genus Actinomyces. Smith et al . (1964) stated …

Two groups were equated by a strength test designed by the writer, and randomly placed in an experimental or control group. The experimental group participated in …

Isolation And Characterization Of Fecal Streptococci From Surface Waters In South Dakota, Jerome Edward Tiede Jan 1968

Isolation And Characterization Of Fecal Streptococci From Surface Waters In South Dakota, Jerome Edward Tiede

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organisms referred to as "fecal streptococci" or "enterococci" have been studied as possible indicators of pathogenic bacteria of fecal origin since their· discovery. In Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (1957), the "enterococci" are classified as Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus faecalis var. liquefaciens, Streptococcus faecalis var. zyrnogenes and Streptococcus durans. Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus equinus do not meet all the criteria of the enterococcus group. However, they are found in great numbers in certain fecal material. These organisms, and the”enterococci" are collectively referred to as "fecal streptococci." The unavailability of satisfactory methods and of selective media has prevented the acceptance of these …

Beneficial Effects Of An Intercepting Trench On Degraded Ground Water In The Vicinity Of A Refuse Landfill, William George Hendrickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The concern for ground water contamination resulting from the sanitary landfill method of disposal, the realization that adequate data were lacking, and the availability of a refuse landfill that could be used for obtaining more pertinent data, resulted in several research projects at this university. These included: a study of the effects of the refuse landfill on the quality of the underlying ground water (5) ; a study of the areal extent of the contamination and the variance due to seasonal changes (6); and a study of the effects of the refuse landfill on the subsequential uses of the related …

Aflatoxicosis In Poultry, John G. Gregoriades Jan 1968

Aflatoxicosis In Poultry, John G. Gregoriades

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term "aflatoxicosis" is applied to the toxicosis which is produced by "aflatoxin", a poisonous metabolite produced by certain strains of Aspergillus flavus. This toxin is a part of a series of toxins produced by fungi, which may be ingested by livestock, poultry and humans to produce toxigenic effects--the so-called mycotoxicoses. The occurrence of mycotoxicoses are frequent enough considering the prevalence of fungi and their proliferation in nature. They develop under favorable environmental conditions in foods and feeds of plant origin before and after harvest.

The Counselor's Role As Perceived By Administrators, Counselors, And Teacher-Counselors In South Dakota High Schools, Darlene Mulder Prashar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of the counselor in the secondary school is not always well understood. Confusion and poor communication about the degree of responsibility for various activities may interfere with effective work. Guidance programs in secondary schools are confronted with many problems. Possibly, the lack of understanding of the role of the counselor, plus the opinions and attitudes of the school personnel, are hindering the effectiveness of guidance programs in many of the secondary schools of South Dakota. With the Wrenn Report, the American Personnel and Guidance Association gave impetus to guidance programs in American schools by better defining the school …

Patterns Of Change In The Spatial And Functional Aspects Of Trade Centers And Trade Areas In South Dakota, Ralph James Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rapid changes have occurred in the Great Plains over the years. At the turn of the century, the small towns that dotted the country-side served as full-service centers for the surrounding territory. They provided all the necessary marketing facilities and consumer goods as well as acting as centers for social functions. In the intervening years, some of these centers have increased tremendously in size while others have ceased to grow or have, in fact, declined. The profound economic and technological advances in farming, marketing, transportation, and merchandising have affected the number, size, functions, and viability of the cities and towns. …

A Three Year Soil Insecticide Control Study On Corn Rootworms (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) In South Dakota, Lance J. Nearman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The damage caused by corn rootworms (Coleoptera, Chrysomeiidae) results in extensive losses to corn each year in South Dakota. Thousands of dollars are spent each year for the control of these insects. Kantack (1965} reported during 1963 approximately 496,000 acres of corn were severely damaged by corn rootworms in South Dakota. In 1964 corn rootworm infestation increased causing an estimated three million dollars in damage (Kantack, 1965). At present, serious infestations occur in major corn growing regions of southeastern and western South Dakota. Three species of corn rootworms are found in South Dakota: the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera Leconte; …
