Feeding Value Of High Protein Oat Silage Versus Corn Silage For Dairy Cows, Tilahun Sahlu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corn accounts for 80% of the total silage production in the United States while oats ranks second as a feed grain crop. Oats are a major crop in areas of the world where temperatures are cool and short growing seasons are not well suited for corn production. South Dakota is the leading oat producing state in the nation with 1. 68 million kilograms of oats produced annually. Oats play an important roll as animal feed because among common cereals in the United States it ranks highest in both protein and lysine content. Due to the wide genetic diversity of oat …

Design, Construction, And Performance Evaluation Of An Ozonation Pilot Plant, Delvin Edward Deboer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The treatment of water and wastewater may involve numerous chemical and physical unit processes. Each unit process is selected on the basis of its ability to accomplish specified treatment objectives. Ozone treatment is one such chemical unit process alternative. Ozonation is commonly practices abroad. Presently, nearly one thousand water treatment facilities in Western Europe use ozone for various applications. Ozone treatment of water is not common in the United States with just five installations as 1979. However, rising costs of chemicals, recent advances in ozone technology, and new treatment regulations and discharge requirements have enhanced the use of ozone as …

W. Eugene Smith : Technique, Artistry And Social Statement In The Photographic Essay, Robert E. Alber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While W. Eugene Smith was not considered a prominent figure outside of photojournalism, most people who read newspapers and magazines from the 1930s to the 1970s have seen his work. His cameras focused on some of the great events of American history during his career, including the Depression, World War II, presidential politics (Smith photographed a smiling Harry Truman holding a Chicago Tribune headlining a Dewey victory), racial tension in the 1950’s and anti-war demonstrations during the 1960s. Smith’s photographic style embodied qualities rarely found in one man. He was a master craftsman who possessed the creative vision of an …

Teenagers Teaching Nutrition: Effects On Their Own Dietary Habits, Marlys Hauck-Fenner Jan 1980

Teenagers Teaching Nutrition: Effects On Their Own Dietary Habits, Marlys Hauck-Fenner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This researcher first felt the need for teenage nutrition education beyond the traditional in-class activities after teaching several years of home economics at the high school level. During discussions, students revealed that they daily consumed only small quantities of food in order to lose weight or remain slim. Diets leaned heavily towards meats and carbohydrate foods, and included very few fruits and minute quantities of vegetables other than potatoes. Students also showed a great reluctance to prepare or sample unfamiliar foods in the laboratory, especially vegetables and milk products. Discussions with other teachers showed those to be common problems in …

Effects Of Isotonic Training, Isokinetic Training And Jumping Practice On The Vertical Jump Performance Of College Age Women, Teri Helling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been very little research completed in the area of weight training for women. Many women have weight training facilities and equipment available to them, but for many reasons do not take advantage of it. There are many misconceptions of weight training that are of concern to the female, such as; loss of flexibility, developing large, bulky muscles and traits of masculinity. A problem also arises in the knowledge and proper use of equipment. Until the present time, the two main concepts of resistive exercise have been isotonic and isometric. In 1966, Ferrine pioneered the first isokinetic exerciser. Isokenetic …

Host Responses Of Calves To A Group 5 Bovine Herpesvirus, Linda A. Krogman Jan 1980

Host Responses Of Calves To A Group 5 Bovine Herpesvirus, Linda A. Krogman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex is of substantial economic importance to cattlemen in the United States. An estimated 40-80% of all cattle diseases involve the respiratory system. Although cattle may recover, cost of treatment and loss in production make respiratory disease an important factor to consider in the cattle industry. IN 1974, 407,000 yearling feedlot cattle in Colorado were surveyed for the causes of illness and death. The morbidity was 5.1% with a case mortality of 18.9%. Approximately 75% of the clinical diagnosis and 64% of the necropsy findings indicated respiratory tract diseases. Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites that must …

The Effectiveness Of Aeration And Potassium Permanganate Oxidation And Filtration On Removal Of Iron And Manganese From Ground Water, Steven J. Quail Jan 1980

The Effectiveness Of Aeration And Potassium Permanganate Oxidation And Filtration On Removal Of Iron And Manganese From Ground Water, Steven J. Quail

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States Public Health Service (USPHS) established water quality standards in 1946 and revised them in 1956 and 1962. In these standards the maximum recommended concentrations of iron and manganese were 0.03 and 0.05 mg/l respectively. Because trace amounts of these elements are essential for proper nutrition of both plants and animals, the recommended limits are not based on any physiological or environmental considerations. Rather, the presence of iron and manganese in water is objectional because the precipitation of these metals alters the appearance of the water, turning it a turbid yellow brown to black. The Brookings, South Dakota …

An Analysis Of Changes In The Divorce Rate In South Dakota From 1950-1960, 1960-1970 And 1950-1970, Jody J. Shaskey Jan 1980

An Analysis Of Changes In The Divorce Rate In South Dakota From 1950-1960, 1960-1970 And 1950-1970, Jody J. Shaskey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In South Dakota, the divorce rate has increased every year during the 1970’s, climbing from a rate of 2.0 per 1,000 population in 1970 to 3.4 per 1,000 population in 1976. Commenting on this, Judge John Wilds, a presiding Circuit Court Judge in Minnehaha County, recently stated that he believed the increasing divorce rate in that county was due in part to the high level of labor force participation by married women. Margie Trankle, a counselor for Lutheran Social Services, agreed with Wilds that working women may increase the divorce rate by decreasing their own dependence on their husbands. Both …

A Comparative Perspective On The Status Attainment Process Of White And Native American Youth, Leonard R. Decker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Status attainment, as commonly indicated by levels of educational and occupational achievement, is a complicated process. A variety of variables have been found to be quite influential in the determination of one's eventual position in the social hierarchy of American society. Research done jointly by William H. Sewell and Robert M. Hauser (1972, 1975) regarding the status attainment process has resulted in a Wisconsin model of Adolescent Achievement in which the authors have identified a number of experiences that have significant import for young people's post-high school educational and occupational attainments. The Sewell and Hauser model links socioeconomic origins and …

A Computerized Planning Model For Small Farms In Southeastern South Dakota, Rodney Gene De Smet Jan 1980

A Computerized Planning Model For Small Farms In Southeastern South Dakota, Rodney Gene De Smet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Structural changes in agriculture resulting in fewer and larger farms carries strong implications for smaller farms. Included in the small farm group are small, low-resource, and part-time farmers, some of which are unable to generate an adequate income due to limited resources. This research study has developed a managerial tool for assisting low-resource farmers in developing optimal farm plans. The planning model is an interaction of familiar components (budgets) with a complex mathematical model (linear progra111T1ing) to provide an efficient analytical tool for use by farmers to aid in their managerial process. This study has placed emphasis upon the development …

Groundwater Quality In The Vicinity Of Seeping Stablilization Ponds, Gary Lee Bleeker Jan 1980

Groundwater Quality In The Vicinity Of Seeping Stablilization Ponds, Gary Lee Bleeker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protection on our nation’s streams and lakes has received high priority during the last 20 years. Modernization has provided people with more leisure time. With more free time people have begun to utilize lakes and rivers as recreational facilities, requiring that pollution of such facilities be prevented. To control pollution and restore waterways, laws such as the Water Quality Act of 1965, Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972 and the Clean Water Act of 1977 have been implemented. Such laws have forced polluters to establish treatment for their wastewaters. No longer is the open discharge of wastes into streams …

Comparison Of Theoretical And Experimental Infiltration Heat-Loss Results In Two Residential Houses In Brookings, South Dakota, Fereidoon Delfanian Jan 1980

Comparison Of Theoretical And Experimental Infiltration Heat-Loss Results In Two Residential Houses In Brookings, South Dakota, Fereidoon Delfanian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Up to 40% of the heating/cooling energy requirement of a typical home can be attributed to unnecessary air infiltration. To reduce the energy costs of heating/cooling a home, it is therefore essential that every possible measure be taken to reduce the loss of conditioned air through the many leakage paths in a house. In order to accomplish this, it is first necessary to locate these leaks, and to determine their relative importance. Both theoretical and experimental techniques have been developed to accomplish this. This effort compares existing theoretical techniques to new experimental results on two houses of different window construction, …

A Theory And Partial Test Of Women's Double-Tracking Role Transitions And Quality Of Role Enactment, Charlene Joy Ellis Jan 1980

A Theory And Partial Test Of Women's Double-Tracking Role Transitions And Quality Of Role Enactment, Charlene Joy Ellis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As increasing numbers of women enter the labor force, it is becoming apparent women’s views concerning their future lifestyle are changing. The attempt to double-track is resulting in higher incidences of stress in women’s lives. Arnold Rose conducted a study of college females at the University of Minnesota. He discovered that females did not have clear expectations of future roles. He suggested that they had not been afforded the opportunity for relevant and adequate training that would prepare them for these roles. Several researchers have presented theories related to role enactment. The consensus appears to be that the expectations of …

Public Housing For The Elderly : The Relationship Of Selected Physical Standards To Resident Satisfaction, Kathleen L. Zoellner Jan 1980

Public Housing For The Elderly : The Relationship Of Selected Physical Standards To Resident Satisfaction, Kathleen L. Zoellner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A major area of recent interest to the elderly is housing. One of the reasons housing has become a major concern is because housing represents much more than a physical structure in our society. Housing is a subject of highly charged emotional content with many strong feelings attached. The housing environment seems to have considerable control over they way in which individuals perceive themselves and over others perception of them. The design of buildings can have an important effect on the persons who live and move around in them. In the United States there has been experimentation with a variety …

Penance And Confession In Medieval Literature For The Laity, Mary J. Daniel Jan 1980

Penance And Confession In Medieval Literature For The Laity, Mary J. Daniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The world of the Middle Ages was one which constantly reminded man of his temporary nature and uncertain future. All around him, the medieval man witnessed disease, disaster and death. The bubonic plague mysteriously appeared in the fourteenth century to claim, according to some estimates, as much as one third of the population of the unknown world. Earthquakes, storms and droughts were considered by many as the signs of God’s displeasure with man, and he natural explanations of these phenomena were left to the later generations. Poor hygiene and inadequate knowledge of how to deal with the problems of overpopulation …
