The Best Of All Breathing: Hunting And Environmental Change In Mississippi 1900-1980, Wiley C. Prewitt Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines hunting in Mississippi with regard to the changing relationship between humans and their environment. Hunting is the basic human interaction with nature. It is timeless activity, yet at the same time an activity deeply impacted by the human relation to the land.

In approaching the change in hunting this thesis examined human population change by reviewing the demographic consequences of the rural exodus in addition to the response of animal populations to the human exodus and to the restocking efforts of wildlife biologists. At the same time that people were leaving the farms, organized game conservation was …

Preliminary Epidemiological Interpretation Of The Intrinsic And Extrinsic Factors Contributing To The Coverage And Participation Rates Of The Vaccination Program In Arssi, Ethiopia, Muchie Kidanu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many immunization programs in developing countries arr now undergoing a period of rapid utilization. Innovative strategies, such as immunization holidays, are being tried. Political commitment and enthusiasm are high. There is a strong desire by health professionals to protect the lives of many children from the untimely death and/or disability resulting from infectious diseases preventable by vaccination.

Evaluation of an immunization program can benefit other elements of the health system, particularly those that are not amenable to objective evaluation as immunization. In this case, immunization can serve as an indicator of the overall performance of the health system. The problems …

Selected Aspects Of The Secretary's Role In The Public Schools As Perceived By Principals, Teachers, And School Secretaries, Patty H. Richards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare principals', teachers' and secretaries' perceptions regarding selected aspects of the school secretary's role in administering the public schools. A questionnaire, developed by the researcher, was sent to 465 principals, teachers, and school secretaries in the First Tennessee Development District, in Spring, 1991. Three hundred ninety-one questionnaires were returned for a response rate of 84%. Six null hypotheses were tested for significance at the.05 level. The one-way analysis of variance and the Student-Newman-Keuls statistical procedures were used to test the responses of the three groups of participants for significant differences. All the null …

An Examination Of The Leadership Of Administrators In Higher Education As Represented In The American Academic Novel From 1950 To 1990, Laura T. Barnett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the academic leadership as portrayed in the American academic novel from 1950 to 1990. Leadership positions from higher education (president, vice-president, dean, and chairperson) were examined in this analysis of 40 academic fiction novels. The leader behavior of the selected characters was classified, using the following categories: autocratic (telling), democratic (selling), participative (participating), delegative (delegating), situational (varying) and "other" (unclassifiable due to lack of information or criteria variance). The finding was that the majority of academic leaders, in the novels studied, behaved using an autocratic (telling) leadership behavior. Also, the majority of …

Students' Perceptions Of Native And Non-Native English Speaking Graduate Teaching Assistants (Gtas), Florence Louise Ouzts May 1991

Students' Perceptions Of Native And Non-Native English Speaking Graduate Teaching Assistants (Gtas), Florence Louise Ouzts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated students' perceptions of native English speaking (NES) and non-native English speaking (NNES) graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). A total of 69 GTAs teaching in the Spring and Summer semesters of 1990 at selected Southern universities participated in the study. The primary aim of this research was to determine if students' ratings of GTAs were general or cultural specific and to identify specific student-trait variables that potentially might bias students' ratings of NNES GTAs. It was hypothesized that the more acculturated the NNES GTAs were to the American university setting the more favorable would be the students' ratings of …

Nitrogen Dioxide Reaction With Proteins: Evidence For Peptide Bond Cleavage At Lysine Residues, Darryl B. Hood May 1991

Nitrogen Dioxide Reaction With Proteins: Evidence For Peptide Bond Cleavage At Lysine Residues, Darryl B. Hood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen dioxide (NO$\sb2$), an air pollutant produced by burning fossil fuels and a component of cigarette smoke, is thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of pulmonary diseases, such as emphysema. To gain information on the mechanism by which NO$\sb2$ damages the lung, in vitro exposures of $\alpha\sb1$-proteinase inhibitor ($\alpha\sb1$-PI), elastin, bovine serum albumin (BSA), human serum albumin (HSA) and synthetic poly-L-lysine were performed. A genetic deficiency of $\alpha\sb1$-PI predisposes humans to emphysema and NO$\sb2$ has been hypothesized to damage $\alpha\sb1$-PI, which would leave proteases such as human neutrophil elastase, (HNE) free to attack lung structural proteins. The ability of $\alpha\sb1$-PI …

Mouse Mast Cell Proteases: Induction, Molecular Cloning, And Characterization, Wei Chu May 1991

Mouse Mast Cell Proteases: Induction, Molecular Cloning, And Characterization, Wei Chu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tryptase, a mast cell-specific serine protease with trypsin-like specificity, has been identified in a mouse mast cell line (ABFTL-6) based on it's enzymatic activity, inhibition properties, and cross-reactivity to a human mast cell tryptase antibody. The effects of fibroblast-conditioned medium and sodium butyrate on ABFTL-6 mast cell differentiation and tryptase expression have been examined. ABFTL-6 mouse mast cells undergo phenotypic changes upon culturing in media supplemented with fibroblast-conditioned media at 50% or 1 mM sodium butyrate. The induced cells increased in size, had larger and more metachromatic cytoplasmic granules, and increased their total cellular protein about four-fold. Tryptase activity increased …

Perceptual Regions Of South Dakota, Steven L. Payton Jan 1991

Perceptual Regions Of South Dakota, Steven L. Payton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The state of South Dakota has been divided into many different regions. Some of these regions are the result of formal classification by professionals "such as geographers, geologists and pedologists, whereas others reflect the informal opinion of a layman or nonprofessional. Some distinctions exist, perhaps, for convenience, whereas others express a sense of pride and belonging in community or territory. Regardless of the motivation, the resulting perceptual regions are abstractions of space that illustrate how the residents of South Dakota interpret their environment. This paper is a cultural study. The objective of this study is to determine whether South Dakota …
