Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia Aug 2006

Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electrooxidation has been used to deposit thin film polyaniline as well as its derivative - thin film poly (ortho-phenylenediamine) (POPD) and poly (meta-phenylenediamine) (PMPD) on carbon electrodes, which are subsequently used to monitor the environmental heavy metal ions (Hg2+, Pb2+ ,Cd2+) through a rather unusual "blocking" of anodic stripping for these metals. Using Hg2+ as a model, its cyclic voltammogram for a modified glassy carbon electrode with the resultant polymer shows an enhanced cathodic peak that increases linearly with the analyte ion concentration. POPD also exhibits unique selective detection for organic species. Acetaminophen and …

Multiobjective Simulation-Based Methodologies For Medical Decision Making., Ahmed Hassan Youssefagha Aug 2006

Multiobjective Simulation-Based Methodologies For Medical Decision Making., Ahmed Hassan Youssefagha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A variety of methodologies have been employed for decision making related to the treatment of diseases/injury. Decision trees are a functional way in which to examine problems under uncertainty by providing a method to analyze decisions under risk (Detsky, 1996, 97). However, conventional decision trees do not completely represent "the real world" since they cannot investigate problems that are cyclic in nature (Jaafari, 2003). The stochastic tree that developed Hazen during 1992-to-1996 is one of the most relevant methods and techniques related to decision analyses that append more incorporation for medical intervention related to recurring diseases/injuries. "The approach combines features …

Kinetics Of Sulfur And Peroxide Cured Epdm Rubber Aging In Chloraminated Water., Jahnavi Valleru 1982-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Elastomer degradation when exposed to chloraminated potable water is dependent on a number of poorly understood factors. Temperature and chloramine concentration are both believed to play roles, however, they have not been adequately defined. In order to estimate the material performance and predict the service life of elastomeric parts, knowledge of degradation modes, rate constants of the aging process and their activation energies is useful. EPDM elastomers are used in numerous applications which require resistance to ozone attack and weather due to their stable, saturated polymer backbone structure. Accelerated aging experiments were conducted on both EPDM - S and EPDM …

Conjugative Transfer Pathways Of High-Level Mupirocin Resistance And Conjugative Transfer Genes In Staphylococcus., Danielle Barnard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To combat widespread infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, mupirocin was introduced at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tennessee. Soon after introduction, high-level mupirocin-resistance emerged. The rapid emergence was hypothesized to be due to conjugative transfer of the mupA resistance gene from S. epidermidis to S. aureus. Results have shown that transfer of high-level mupirocin-resistance from S. aureus donors commonly occurs. However, transfer from naturally-occurring S. epidermidis donors was not attainable. Staphylococcus epidermidis transconjugants, however, were capable of serving as donors. Further examination of non-transmissibility included PCR analysis of conjugative transfer genes (tra genes) in capable …

The Cost Of Mupirocin Resistance In Staphylococcus., Susan D. Reynolds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Control of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is based on the concept that resistance incurs a fitness cost in non-selective conditions. Fitness costs were assessed for low- and high-level mupirocin resistance in locally-derived Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis. Costs of resistance were assessed in pure cultures by comparing growth curve characteristics and in mixed culture as the proportion of resistant cells surviving. Costs were not present in comparisons of growth rates among groups of naturally-occurring isolates from the different resistance categories. However, in S. aureus, growth rates within resistance categories differed by approximately 30 – 90%. Among near-isogenic pairs …
