Marital Satisfaction: Factors For Black Jamaicans And African Americansx Living In The United States, Nvischi Edwards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Marital satisfaction is the strongest predictor for happiness in many areas of life (Russel & Wells, 1994). A satisfying marriage is associated with better general adjustment and fewer health problems (Bray & Jouriles, 1995). Factors that contribute to marital satisfaction reported by researchers include religion and spirituality (Anthony, 1993; Marks et al., 2008; Shehas, Boch & Lee, 1990), family of origin dynamics (Cohn, Silver, Cowan, Cowan, & Pearson, 1992; Webster, Orbuch, & House, 1995), and quality of family relationships (Timer, Veroff, & Hatchett, 1996). Additionally, satisfying marriages are beneficial to couples and children of these marriages. The purpose of this …

Examination Of The Fidelity Of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Implementation And Its Relationship To Academic And Behavio, Jason Lafrance

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative research was to examine the level of implementation of School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) in the State of Florida. The relationship between the fidelity of implementation of SWPBS as measured by the Benchmarks of Quality tool to academic and behavioral outcomes for middle and elementary schools was then analyzed. The academic outcomes for this study included FCAT Reading and Mathematics subtest scores. The behavioral outcomes were measured using the number of Office Discipline Referrals per 100 students and the number of days for Out of School Suspensions per 100 students. The literature review suggests that …

Nanofiltration Membrane Pilot Studies For Disinfection By-Product Control, Eric J. Lynne Jan 2009

Nanofiltration Membrane Pilot Studies For Disinfection By-Product Control, Eric J. Lynne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Watertown, South Dakota currently uses conventional softening to treat ground water to remove hardness, iron and manganese, and natural organic matter. The distribution system has experienced elevated concentrations of disinfection by-products, which will require additional treatment to comply with future limits set by the Stage 2 Disinfectant/Disinfection By-Products Rule. A nanofiltration membrane system has been proposed to remove additional natural organic matter from the softened water. Removing the natural organic material disinfection by-product precursors should reduce the concentration of disinfection by-products. The use of nanofiltration membranes has been previously documented to reject total organic carbon, while allowing desirable levels of …

Culture Care Beliefs, Meanings And Practices Related To Health And Well-Being Of South Sudanese "Lost Boy And Lost Girl" Refugees, Margaret Bowles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this ethnonursing study was to describe, analyze and interpret the culture care beliefs, meanings and practices related to health and well-being of South Sudanese "Lost Boy and Lost Girls" following resettlement in the United States. Leininger's theory of culture care diversity and universality and the ethnonursing method provided the organizing framework for studying the domain of inquiry. Interviews were conducted with nineteen general informants and ten key informants, all who lived in the Midwest United States. Extensive analysis of digitally recorded interviews together with the researcher's participant observations and field notes revealed nine data categories and five …

Foster Mothers' Experience Of Parenting A Foster Child With Attachment Problems: An Empirical Phenomenological Investigation, Cynthia Byers Jan 2009

Foster Mothers' Experience Of Parenting A Foster Child With Attachment Problems: An Empirical Phenomenological Investigation, Cynthia Byers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explored foster mothers' experiences of parenting a foster child who displayed problematic attachment. This topic is important because research suggests foster children presenting with attachment problems often experience disrupted foster placements, which are known to be detrimental to their continued development.

An introductory letter seeking foster mothers with difficult to care for foster children between the ages of 2 and younger than 6 years was sent by seven foster care agencies in Allegheny County to all of those agencies' foster mothers. Foster mothers were not told in advance that the study involved attachment-disordered foster children. Six foster mothers …

Using The Activity Vector Analysis To Determine Teacher Dispositions For Charter School Teachers In Urban High Schools, Linda M. Clautti Jan 2009

Using The Activity Vector Analysis To Determine Teacher Dispositions For Charter School Teachers In Urban High Schools, Linda M. Clautti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined responses to the Activity Vector Analysis by both teachers and students in two urban charter high schools. The premise of this research was that the five dispositions of assertiveness, sociability, calmness, conformity, and conscious restraint were needed to be successful particularly in teaching urban students in charter high schools. Dispositions are "The values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence behaviors toward students, families, colleagues, and communities and affect student learning, motivation and development as well as the educator's own professional growth" (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education [NCATE], 2000).

The researcher wanted, first, to see what …

Zinc-Mediated Dimerization Of Proteins Through A -Cxcxxxxcxc- Sequence, Tyler Collins Jan 2009

Zinc-Mediated Dimerization Of Proteins Through A -Cxcxxxxcxc- Sequence, Tyler Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dimerization of cellular proteins has become an intense field of study due to its importance in signal transduction and gene expression, amongst many other functions. Arguably the most intriguing quality regarding dimerization is the high incidence of simultaneous dimeric events occurring within the cell, where each constructed dimer individually controls a single pathway with high specificity. Additionally, the discoveries of new motifs possessing this seemingly common functionality participate in truly unique and often poorly understood mechanisms. CopY, a metal-responsive bacterial repressor from Enterococcus hirae possesses distinctive dimerization properties. We show that this cysteine metal-binding motif, which contains a metal-reactive C-terminal …

Examining Novice Teacher Development Through The Clinical Supervision Process: A Participatory Action Research, Chad Daloia Jan 2009

Examining Novice Teacher Development Through The Clinical Supervision Process: A Participatory Action Research, Chad Daloia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first clinical supervision experience can significantly impact a novice teacher's overall success during the early years of their teaching career (Robinson, 1998). It is a very stressful, challenging time, and for many, it is the first time he/she is asked to take on multiple roles aside from direct instruction and professional responsibilities (Sykes, 1996). As districts work to better align policies and induction programs with the changing needs of novice teachers, they must face the fact that they serve powerful roles as teacher educators, mentors, and retainers. It is important for administrators to self-assess how districts are meeting or …
