Fungi-Derived Natural Products With Binding Affinities For Human Opioid Or Cannabinoid Receptors, Jiangtao Gao Jan 2010

Fungi-Derived Natural Products With Binding Affinities For Human Opioid Or Cannabinoid Receptors, Jiangtao Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Both opioid and cannabinoid receptors belong to the large superfamily of GPCRs and play an important role in a variety of processes including pain, craving, neurodegeneration, metabolic regulation, anxiety and immune function. Therefore, recent advances and discoveries in opioid and cannabinoid receptors have paved the way for a very exciting future for opioid and cannabinoid receptors-based therapies to potentially treat a variety of conditions. However, the growing realizations of the complexity of these two receptors regulation in physiological and pathological conditions have discouraged the development of new therapeutics. So, it is important for us to identify new chemical scaffolds which …

Pharmacological Reversal Of Cognitive Bias In The Chick Anxiety-Depression Continuum Model, Kristen Anne Hymel Jan 2010

Pharmacological Reversal Of Cognitive Bias In The Chick Anxiety-Depression Continuum Model, Kristen Anne Hymel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive bias is a phenomenon that presents in clinical populations where anxious individuals tend to adopt a more pessimistic interpretation of ambiguous aversive stimuli and depressed individuals not only tend to adopt a more pessimistic interpretation of ambiguous aversive stimuli, but also a less optimistic interpretation of ambiguous appetitive stimuli. Such biases have also been pharmacologically reversed in clinical trials. To measure cognitive bias in the chick anxiety-depression continuum model, chicks exposed to an isolation stressor of 5 min to induce an anxiety-like or 60 min to induce a depressive-like state were then tested in a straight alley maze to …

Design And Synthesis Of Cdk-5 And Mek-5 Inhibitors And Synthesis Towards Tubulysin Analogs, Ishveen Kaur Chopra Jan 2010

Design And Synthesis Of Cdk-5 And Mek-5 Inhibitors And Synthesis Towards Tubulysin Analogs, Ishveen Kaur Chopra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

CDK-5 is associated with hyperphosphorylation of the microtubule-associated protein tau, formation of neurofibrillary tangles, and possibly an acceleration of the neurodegenerative progression of Alzheimer's disease. C6-O linked benzimidazoles and C-4 benzamide and phenylacetamide benzimidazoles based on (R)-Roscovitine, a non-selective inhibitor of CDK-5 were designed and synthesized.

MEK-5, a member of the MAPK family, phosphorylates ERK-5 permitting cells to survive oxidative stress. MEK-5 is upregulated in tumor cells and activated by mitogens; inhibition of this enzyme is a potential anti-cancer strategy. Scaffolds from the following classes--benzimidazole, diphenylamine, flavones, and ortho-carboxyamide were examined for their capacity to be developed into potent and …

American Health Care: Justice, Policy, Reform, Carolyn Conti Jan 2010

American Health Care: Justice, Policy, Reform, Carolyn Conti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The American health care system is seriously flawed and in need of reform. American health care is expensive and rationed by the ability to pay. More than forty-five million Americans lack regular access to health care because they have no health insurance and cannot afford to pay for care on their own. An even greater number of Americans have inadequate access to health care because their health insurance provides insufficient coverage. Even well-insured Americans, most of whom get their health insurance through their employers, have problems because their out-of-pocket expenses are escalating while their coverage is shrinking.

Contemporary public discourse …

Clinical Trial Of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy To Reduce Antiretroviral Side Effects In Hiv Patients, R. Eric Doerfler Jan 2010

Clinical Trial Of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy To Reduce Antiretroviral Side Effects In Hiv Patients, R. Eric Doerfler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background & Purpose: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV/AIDS has led to significant improvements in survival and a reduction in AIDS-related morbidity. Adherence to regimens is vital, yet clinical observations and research have suggested that side effects are a significant reason for non-adherence. This randomized, controlled clinical trial was a pilot study sought to determine if a brief exposure cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) could reduce side effect symptoms in HIV/AIDS patients on ART.

Methods: 33 participants were randomized to standard adherence education alone or adherence education plus three sessions of CBT over a period of three months.

Results: Completing the study were …

Rights In Flux: The Rights Of Afghan Women In Different Eras, Kelly Anne Drevitch Jan 2010

Rights In Flux: The Rights Of Afghan Women In Different Eras, Kelly Anne Drevitch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Have the lives of Afghan women improved since the U.S. invasion of October of 2001? Historically, the George W. Bush Administration followed past foreign governments, Afghan political parties, and Afghan regimes who also promised to "liberate Afghan women" when making the case for war or violence. Using case study methodology and feminist theory, the research compares the status of Afghan women in three eras: before the Taliban (1973 to 1995), during the Taliban (1996 to October 2001), and since the U.S. invasion (October 2001 to December 2009). By applying gender and cultural essentialism, the research concludes that these theories offer …

Organ Donation In Japan: A Longitudinal Study Of Quality Of Life Of Living Liver Donors, Etsuko Soeda Jan 2010

Organ Donation In Japan: A Longitudinal Study Of Quality Of Life Of Living Liver Donors, Etsuko Soeda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Japan is a highly developed country with a gross national product second only to the United States. Yet in the field of organ transplantation involving organ donation from victims who died from trauma such as automobile accidents and brain hemorrhage, Japan is behind all western countries and many developing countries. Removing organs from deceased donors was prohibited in Japan until 1997.

Currently cadaveric organ donation remains minimal and, as a result, patients in need of heart transplantation must often pay for surgery performed abroad. One of the saddest sights on Japanese streets is a child standing on the street with …

Describing Emotional, Social, And Cognitive Processes In Adolescents With And Without Psychopathic Traits: Examining Rorschach Variables, Vanessa Rae Talkington Jan 2010

Describing Emotional, Social, And Cognitive Processes In Adolescents With And Without Psychopathic Traits: Examining Rorschach Variables, Vanessa Rae Talkington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined the effectiveness of select Rorschach Inkblot Method (RIM) variables in detecting individual differences among youth diagnosed with Conduct Disorder (CD) who were either high or low on psychopathic traits. Twenty-nine male adolescents with CD in an alternative education school setting were placed into high or low psychopathy groups based on their Hare Psychopathy Checklist (PCL: YV) scores. Significant differences were found for WSum6, a RIM variable that measures cognitive ideation. However, both CD groups gave very few answers that yielded rich RIM protocols. That is, answers tended to be simple and similar, making inferential statistics uninterpretable. …

A Higher Public Spirit And A Better Social Order: The Civic Club Of Allegheny County, 1895-1930, Aaron Matthew Gallogly Jan 2010

A Higher Public Spirit And A Better Social Order: The Civic Club Of Allegheny County, 1895-1930, Aaron Matthew Gallogly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Civic Club of Allegheny County was an organization created in the Progressive era that confronted urban issues that plagued early twentieth century Pittsburgh. Although the club's origins were part of a long tradition of women's reform groups, this organization was a mixed-gender organization, different than most cities in the United States. The membership and leadership of the organization shifted from the active, club female to the professional male. Professionalism appealed to the members of the Civic Club because it limited decision-making to those who possessed certain qualifications. This belief helped facilitate the shift, as professionals became important to both …

Personal Digital Assistants: Their Influence On Clinical Decision-Making And The Utilization Of Evidence-Based Practice In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Carol S. Gorelick Jan 2010

Personal Digital Assistants: Their Influence On Clinical Decision-Making And The Utilization Of Evidence-Based Practice In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Carol S. Gorelick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last decade, the advent of the personal digital assistant (PDA) and the development of clinical software specific to nursing practice have changed the way that many nurses manage information and workload. More recently, PDAs have become a standard tool in undergraduate nursing education. Though there is substantial discussion in the literature on PDA technology, the emphasis there has been descriptive and anecdotal. Since 2002, nurse authors have reported that PDA use has reduced medication errors and streamlined data gathering. This has lead to speculation that use of the PDA is a clinical tool that supports evidence-based practice and …

Performing To Reclaim: War Trauma And Female Non-Combatant Recovery In Sylvia Townsend Warner, Virginia Woolf, And H.D., Rita Allison Kondrath Jan 2010

Performing To Reclaim: War Trauma And Female Non-Combatant Recovery In Sylvia Townsend Warner, Virginia Woolf, And H.D., Rita Allison Kondrath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines narrative representations of female non-combatant identity authored by Sylvia Townsend Warner, Virginia Woolf, and H.D. between 1916 and 1955, a historical moment consonant with World War I, the interwar era, World War II, and its aftermath. Their depictions of the material reality of war and its devastating impact on selfhood span the genres of the diary, essay, long poem, and novel. I argue that each text forwards a specifically feminist approach to recovery, which manifests in three ways. First, as experimental texts, these works embrace (and mirror) the shattering effects of trauma and loss sustained by non-combatant …

Working With The Drive: A Lacanian Psychoanalytic Approach To The Treatment Of Addictions, Cristina Laurita Jan 2010

Working With The Drive: A Lacanian Psychoanalytic Approach To The Treatment Of Addictions, Cristina Laurita

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the clinical utility of applying Lacanian psychoanalytic interventions to the treatment of addictions. By combining theoretical exegesis with clinical case studies of psychotherapy with patients who struggled with addictions, this project seeks to: 1) contribute to the improvement of the clinical treatment of addictions; and 2) contribute to the advancement of Lacanian clinical scholarship in the U.S. Although the work of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan is well-known in Europe and South America, Lacanian clinical scholarship in the U.S. is disappointingly sparse. As a result, most American clinicians are not aware of the clinical usefulness of Lacanian theory. …

Anxiety In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Examination Of Reporting Trends Among Children, Parents, And Teachers, Cathryn A. Lehman Jan 2010

Anxiety In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Examination Of Reporting Trends Among Children, Parents, And Teachers, Cathryn A. Lehman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by impairments in reciprocal social skills, abnormal language development, and/or a restricted repertoire of behaviors and interests. Among individuals with ASDs, up to 84 percent are thought to have comorbid anxiety diagnoses, which can result in decreased social, emotional, behavioral, academic, and/or adaptive functioning. While differential diagnosis is necessary in order to create symptom-specific treatment protocols to address anxious symptoms, diagnostic decisions can be difficult for clinicians to make due to the common reliance on self-, parent- and teacher-report measures for collecting data. Based on theory, problems arise because deficits in the individual with …

Design and Methods: Boone's Programming Model's concept of planning provided the framework for this study which utilized a descriptive correlational design. The …

Paddy And The Public: Irish Immigrants, New York City, And Mass Culture, 1830-1860, William Patrick Mcgovern Jan 2010

Paddy And The Public: Irish Immigrants, New York City, And Mass Culture, 1830-1860, William Patrick Mcgovern

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the role of visual images in reflecting and shaping attitudes of the native-born towards Irish immigrants in antebellum New York City. Representations in mass culture, specifically in the popular press and on minstrel sheet music covers, serve as a window into understanding native-born discourses on Irish Americans. Various elements of the Irish immigrant trope are analyzed, including massive immigration, crowding, disease, poverty, drunkenness, violence, public women, labor competition, and political corruption. In addition to visual analysis, gender, environmental, and discourse analysis are applied to representations of Irish immigrants. Taking the study of antebellum nativism in a new …
