The Acculturation Of Sudanese Refugees In Maryville Tennessee: Has Self-Sufficiency Been Achieved?., Caitlin Ts Teaster May 2011

The Acculturation Of Sudanese Refugees In Maryville Tennessee: Has Self-Sufficiency Been Achieved?., Caitlin Ts Teaster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2000, a small group of refugees from Sudan were sponsored by three local churches in Maryville, Tennessee. The churches worked with the Bridge Organization in order to orchestrate the refugees' departure from Africa to Maryville. At the time of their sponsorship, it was believed that the Sudanese population in Maryville would be self-sufficient within two years of arrival. This study uses one-on-one, open-ended interviews and a paper-pencil questionnaire with the Sudanese population and a focus group with the American sponsors to assess the extent that the Sudanese refugee population in Maryville has become self-sufficient. While individual success depends on …

Flow Cytometric Analysis Of Crayfish Hemocytes., Sarah Kathryn Allen May 2011

Flow Cytometric Analysis Of Crayfish Hemocytes., Sarah Kathryn Allen

Participants (N = 404) were recruited from a Southern Appalachian university and ranged in age from 18-60 years, with a mean of 21. Data were collected using a web-based survey system. Results of this study lend support to the growing literature demonstrating a link between adult romantic attachment and mate poaching. Additionally, the present study also added to the literature by showing for the first time 1) a relationship between empathy and mate …

Synthesis Of A Resveratrol Glycinate Derivative., Shelley Marie Van Cleve May 2011

Synthesis Of A Resveratrol Glycinate Derivative., Shelley Marie Van Cleve

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recently, the compound resveratrol has had media attention as an anti carcinogen. However, the bioavailability of resveratrol is low in the human system due to its hydrophobic nature. Therefore, it must be administered in high dosages to be effective. A plethora of derivatives have been synthesized that have the potential of resveratrol but sadly share low bioavailability. The first effort of this research was an attempt to produce a more hydrophilic ester of resveratrol. Failing this, the final product was synthesized using a glycine derivative to produce 4-[(1E)-2-(3,5-diacetyloxyphenyl)ethenyl]phenyl N-[(1,1-dimethylethoxy)carbonyl]-glycinate.

High Dynamic Range Imaging For The Detection Of Motion., Jeffrey Robert Hay May 2011

High Dynamic Range Imaging For The Detection Of Motion., Jeffrey Robert Hay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High dynamic range imaging involves imaging at a bit depth higher than the typical 8-12 bits offered by standard video equipment. We propose a method of imaging a scene at high dynamic range, 14+ bits, to detect motion correlated with changes in the measured optical signal. Features within a scene, namely edges, can be tracked through a time sequence and produce a modulation in light levels associated with the edge moving across a region being sampled by the detector. The modulation in the signal is analyzed and a model is proposed that allows for an absolute measurement of the displacement …

They Are In Silence : Refugee Women's Narratives., Erin Elizabeth Herbert May 2011

They Are In Silence : Refugee Women's Narratives., Erin Elizabeth Herbert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work explores the personal narratives of a group refugee women recently resettled in Louisville, Kentucky, participating in the Family Center program at Kentucky Refugee Ministries. This research shows that both local and national refugee resettlement policies are complicit in the marginalization of refugee women. These policies falsely construct refugee women as a universalized "other," silencing the diverse experiences and needs of women resettled in the United States. In turn scholarship and an aid discourse that positions refugee women's employment as "supplementary" to male income is based on assumed social constructions of gender inconsistent with many refugee women's experiences both …

Three Revolutions : A Comparative Study Of Democratization And Youth Movements In The Post-Soviet Sphere., Christy Lynn Rhodes May 2011

Three Revolutions : A Comparative Study Of Democratization And Youth Movements In The Post-Soviet Sphere., Christy Lynn Rhodes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1991, as democratic ideals spread through the former Soviet sphere, newly independent nations and satellite countries began engaging in the truly challenging, albeit hopeful task of dual state- and democracy-building endeavors. After twenty years of growth and change, democracy in the Commonwealth of Independent states remains tenuous. My research examines the levels of democracy in the region while assessing the electoral revolutions experienced there in the early 2000s. I employed a two-part approach, using aggregate-level data for a regional overview of democratic scores and a qualitative comparative case study evaluating the Rose, Orange and Tulip Revolutions as well as …

Delinquency : A Trajectory Analysis Of African-American Males., Wyatt Brown 1985- May 2011

Delinquency : A Trajectory Analysis Of African-American Males., Wyatt Brown 1985-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The initial goals of this study include locating and identifying the taxonomic groups mentioned in Moffitt's (1993) (i.e. life-course persistent offenders, adolescent-limited offenders) using data from the National Longitudinal Survey 1997 (NLSY97). Further, this study compares the social demographics with the predictions of Moffitt (1993,1994) as her theory describes race, particularity those of African-American offenders. This study also examines the role of parental and peer relationships and their effect on the offender disparity among the typologies defined by Moffitt (1993). This study explores one hypothesis: there is a relationship between social bonds, particularly peer association and admittance into Moffitt's (1993) …

How Collaborative The Collaboration? : Assessing The Collaboration Of Services For Juvenile Offenders., James G. Dickerson May 2011

How Collaborative The Collaboration? : Assessing The Collaboration Of Services For Juvenile Offenders., James G. Dickerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Juvenile delinquency with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders has become an increasing problem within the United States. In part this can be attributed to the excessive number of delinquent youth entering the juvenile justice system with untreated substance abuse and/or mental health disorders-thus requiring juvenile justice to become a default system for substance abuse and mental health intervention and treatment services. In an effort to combat this problem, governmental, mental health, social support agencies, and school systems have formed interagency collaborations to provide more effective treatment services. One such interagency collaboration is the JETS Program, a court diversion …

A Comparison Of Two Social Skills Interventions For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder., Grace Mathai May 2011

A Comparison Of Two Social Skills Interventions For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder., Grace Mathai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social reciprocity deficits are a core feature of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and a major source of impairment regardless of cognitive or language ability (Carter, Davis, Klin, & Volkmar, 2005). Since these impairments do not naturally remit with age, it is critical to intervene as early as possible to offset potential risk factors (Tantum, 2003). Group training approaches provide children with teaching opportunities with other children and allow for the direct instruction of skills within a structured environment (Bellini, Peters, Benner, & Hopf, 2007). Research in social skills group research has increased, but several questions remain. This study evaluated …

Cytokine Genetics And Expression : Implications Of An Immunogenetic Pathogenesis In Autism Spectrum Disorders., Meghan Carey Mott May 2011

Cytokine Genetics And Expression : Implications Of An Immunogenetic Pathogenesis In Autism Spectrum Disorders., Meghan Carey Mott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an idiopathic pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder associated with various neuropathologies and immunological dysfunctions. Cytokines are regulatory proteins that facilitate communication between the immune and central nervous systems and mediate inflammation, immunity, and hemopoiesis. Previous literature demonstrates that cytokine expression is altered systemically and in the central nervous system of individuals diagnosed with ASD when compared to matched neurotypical controls. Here it is proposed that cytokines are crucial mediators in autism pathogenesis. The central hypothesis of this research posits that an underlying genetic susceptibility in cytokine genes is triggered by environmental exigencies (e.g., stress, infection, ultrasound, hypoxia, …

Requirement Of Ssdelseed-Motif Of Escherichia Coli F1FO Atp Synthase In Antimicrobial Peptide Binding., Junior Kom Tayou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

F1FO ATP synthase is a membrane bound enzyme capable of synthesizing and hydrolyzing ATP. Lately, α-helical cationic peptides such as melittin and melittin related peptide (MRP) were shown to inhibit E. coli ATP synthase. The proposed but unconfirmed site of inhibition is βDELSEED-motif formed by the residues 380-386, located at the interface of α/β subunit of ATP synthase. This project was a mutagenic analysis of βDELSEED-motif residues to understand the binding mechanism and mode of action of peptide inhibitors. The study addressed 2 main questions: Are the antibacterial/anticancer effects of these peptides related to their inhibitory action …

Identification And Biochemical Characterization Of The Chlamydia Trachomatis Type Iii Secretion Chaperone, Slc1, And Its Role In The Translocation Of The Invasion-Associated Effector Tarp., Amanda J. Brinkworth May 2011

Identification And Biochemical Characterization Of The Chlamydia Trachomatis Type Iii Secretion Chaperone, Slc1, And Its Role In The Translocation Of The Invasion-Associated Effector Tarp., Amanda J. Brinkworth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen that utilizes a type III secretion system to enter mammalian cells and establish an intracellular niche. TARP, the translocated actin recruitment protein, is a chlamydial invasion protein known to be type III secreted by the metabolically inert elementary body upon docking to the mammalian cell surface. Because immediate secretion of TARP into host cells is necessary for entry, I hypothesized that a chlamydial chaperone binds to TARP and facilitates its translocation through the type III secretion apparatus. Most effector-binding type III secretion chaperones are small (14-18 kDa), have an acidic pI, and share …

DBT is an evidence-based comprehensive treatment which addresses emotional reactivity, impulsivity and distress tolerance. The psychology staff at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women (KCIW) had noted that many of the behaviors leading to disruptive and dangerous situations within their female inmate population are related to inmates reacting to extreme emotionality. In response KCIW staff had implemented DBT on a limited basis. Although the treatment was in place, its effectiveness in promoting safety and security at KCIW had yet to …

Elevation Of Cardiac Glycolysis Reduces Pyruvate Dehydrogenase But Increases Glucose Oxidation., Qianwen Wang May 2011

Elevation Of Cardiac Glycolysis Reduces Pyruvate Dehydrogenase But Increases Glucose Oxidation., Qianwen Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heart failure is the most frequent cause of mortality in western countries. Currently, there is no cure treatment for heart failure and the long term survival rate following heart failure is poor, with one third of patients dying within a year of diagnosis. Thus, new therapeutic targets have to be developed. Enhanced glycolysis is a very common phenomenon in the development of heart failure and maybe a target for drug development. However it is not know whether the increased glycolysis is a cause or an effect of heart failure. Also, metabolic modulators to increase glucose use by the heart have …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ATP Synthase is the fundamental means of cellular energy production in animals, plants, and almost all microorganisms. In order to understand the mechanism of ATP catalysis, critical amino acid residues involved in Pi binding have to be identified. The αVISIT-DG sequence at the interface of α/β subunits that contains residues from 345-351 is highly conserved and αAsp-350 has been chosen because of its negative charge side chain and its close proximity (~2.8 Å) to the known phosphate binding residue αArg-376. The mutant's αD350R, αD350Q, αD350A, αR376A/D, and αG351R/A/D were generated by site directed mutagenesis and several biochemical assays were performed …
