A Survey Of The Status Of Conservation Education In Junior High Schools Of Eight Selected Counties In Northwest Iowa, John E. Voss
A Survey Of The Status Of Conservation Education In Junior High Schools Of Eight Selected Counties In Northwest Iowa, John E. Voss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years the subject of conservation has acquired considerable importance throughout this country. The very nature of the problem has become so broad as to include nearly every facet of our daily lives. It has come to include human lives, consumer education, and production along with the more traditional areas of our natural resources such as forests, minerals, soil, and water. As with other contemporary topics, this subject has many implications for American education. It has becorr1e increasingly evident that if we are to maintain our present high standards of living, some effort in education has to be put …

A Study Of A Fused Course In Physics And Chemistry For Watertown High School, Gerhart C. Hertz, Merle T. Meinicke
A Study Of A Fused Course In Physics And Chemistry For Watertown High School, Gerhart C. Hertz, Merle T. Meinicke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The writers had in mind the modification of the present science curriculum in the Watertown High School. In doing this, they sought the answers to the following questions: Can physics and chemistry be fused into a one-year course for pupils who do not enroll in the conventional physics and chemistry classes? Will such a course be feasible and workable? What content will be included? How will it be taught? How will the laboratory work be handled? Can it be adapted to the interests and ability levels of the pupils? Will the achievement of the pupils in this fused course be …

Distribution Of The Herpetofauna Of Kentucky., Symoine Kamin Laufe
Distribution Of The Herpetofauna Of Kentucky., Symoine Kamin Laufe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the herpetofauna of Kentucky is extensive and varied. it has received much less attention than that of most other states. Many herpetologists have reported on various phases of the state's amphibians and reptiles, but for the most part these reports are discrete, either pertaining to a collection, or a generic or specific study. Hence, there is no single adequate work which aptly describes the herpetology of Kentucky as a whole. When one realizes the keystone position of Kentucky in relation to northern and southern forms, the need of a zoogeographical summary of the state becomes even more apparent. Therefore, …
Kentucky Autobiography And Kentucky Culture., William F. Keirce
Kentucky Autobiography And Kentucky Culture., William F. Keirce
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to trace the historical development of autobiographical writing in Kentucky; to analyze the literary and philosophical characteristics of these works and, by this means, to divide these writings into several categories; and, finally, to reveal by an interpretation of these autobiographies, certain cultural aspects of Kentucky life and society. As thus stated, the intentions of this study are several; but, actually, all these aims are inseparably related part. of a single general problem which is to investigate Kentucky autobiographical writing as a whole in order to better understand the individual works in that literature.

A Study Of The Reading Of Fifty Teachers Of Louisville And Jefferson County During The Year Of 1947-1948., Glenn Gray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teacher Reading is the topic of this professional paper which has been written to fulfill partially the requirements for the Degree of Master in Education for the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky. The purpose of this study is neither to condone nor to condemn teachers in their discrimination or quantity of reading, but is, instead, a rather limited survey to portray the extent and type of reading done by teachers in the schools of Jefferson County and the city of Louisville during the year 1947-1948.

A Study Comparing The Educational Proficiency Of The One-Room Rural School Graduates And The Town Elementary School Graduates Found In The Freshman And Sophomore Classes Of Six East Central High Schools In South Dakota, William V. Hass
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There has been considerable discussion in recent years concerning the educational proficiency of the eighth grade graduates of one-room rural schools as compared to that of the eighth grade graduates of independent town and consolidated schools as they enter our high schools. These discussions have not been limited to educational circles alone but have also interested members of the general public. In these discussions opinions are many and factors are few. Conclusions in the majority of cases are based on what the individual wishes to believe true, not what is actually true. In making a study of the above named …

Enriching The Fifth Grade Unit, "The Ohio Valley," By Excursions In The City Of Louisville., Frances P. Moore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In January, 1947, the social studies unit, "The Ohio Valley (The Middle states)," was distributed to all Louisville Elementary Schools to be accessible to the fifth grade teachers. This unit, prepared and written by the Division of Curriculum and Research under Dr. John Dotson, will be described in greater detail in Chapter IV of this study. As a teacher in the Louisville Elementary Schools for the last seven years, with experience in the fifth grade the past five, the writer has felt a need for class excursions to clarify the thinking of the fifth grade pupils and to enrich the …

Teachers are a busy group. Contrary to the belief of many persons who are not in close contact with a teacher, the school day does not end when the children leave the building. No indeed--there are faculty meetings, committee meetings, P.T.A. meetings, educational association meetings and supervisor meetings to mention but a few of the functions every teacher is expected to attend. In the evening there are papers to grade, lessons to prepare, professional books and articles to read, and numerous records of many varieties to keep. Few teachers enjoy the luxury of an eight hour working day. It is …

The Opportunity Class Of The Mary D. Hill School., Gladys E. Wyatt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In almost every classroom in the country there are overage boys and girls, retarded children who have been pushed along through school after repeated failures have convinced both them and their teachers and companions that they are of little consequence. Since not much can be done to remedy the situation after so many years, the only solution in most cases is to pass the children along as rapidly as possible, allowing them to sit in the successive grades where the intellectual tasks are completely beyond their limited abilities. Here they acquire more bad habits and often become personality or behavior …

While the writer was an undergraduate he spent two Summers in the Panamint mountains above Death Valley, California. Hiking with one of the few old-timers remaining in that region he noticed that "the old desert rat" would stoop occasionally to pick up certain rocks which he would examine closely. Some went into a pouch he carried. They were later crushed and "panned." If they made a "showing" in the gold-pan, the prospector would retrace his steps and arduously search for the parent vein. In similar fashion the writer has ventured upon interesting features in the life and character of the …
