Brighton Rock: Growth In Psychological Insight, Sister Catherine Madigan Dc Jan 1969

Brighton Rock: Growth In Psychological Insight, Sister Catherine Madigan Dc

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, presented at Xavier University in 1969, examines Graham Greene's novel "Brighton Rock" as a significant early step in Greene's development of psychologically complex characterization. Madigan argues that the novel represents the first sustained combination of three elements in Greene's fiction: the "thriller" plot structure, the "Catholic element" as a framework of belief opposing his characters' actions, and genuine psychological depth, distinguishing it from both his earlier thrillers and his lighter "entertainments."

The thesis compares "Brighton Rock" to Greene's short story "A Drive in the Country," which shares a similar plot but, due to its brevity and narrative point …

The Theory Of Elective Affinities In The Dramatic Love Poems Of Robert Browning, Harry C. Tartt Jan 1969

The Theory Of Elective Affinities In The Dramatic Love Poems Of Robert Browning, Harry C. Tartt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1969, examines Robert Browning's treatment of romantic love in his dramatic poems through the theoretical lens of elective affinities, which is a concept borrowed from chemistry and first applied to human relationships by Johann Wolfgang Goethe in his 1809 novel Wahlverwandtschaften (Elective Affinities). The study traces the origins of the chemical theory of elective affinities from seventeenth-century analytical chemists including Hermann Boerhaave and Torbern Bergmann through Goethe's literary application of the concept to four lovers whose passions operate as blind, irresistible forces …

Some Thermal Plate Deflections Determined By The Complex Variable Method, James N. Maytum Feb 1968

Some Thermal Plate Deflections Determined By The Complex Variable Method, James N. Maytum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first application of complex variables to elasticity dates with the beginning of this century. In 1902, L. N. G. Filon published a paper in which he developed the rudiments of the problem of plane theory of elasticity in complex variables. In 1909 G. V. Kolosov derived the equations of plane theory of elasticity in complex form and effected solutions to some boundary value problems. The major work relating complex variables and the theory of elasticity was given by N. R. Muskhelishvili whose published works began in 1919. Muskhelishvili’s [11] outstanding contribution is his brilliant monograph "Some Basic Problems in …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Analyses: The prime objectives of the analyses are twofold. First, to extract those statements and ideas of the texts, within the subject being analyzed, which will give the reader a fundamental insight into the principal propositions and contentions of the authors concerning the subjects being analyzed. The second principal objective of the analyses is to provide the reader with a sufficient amount of the author’s ideas and principles on the specific subjects in the analyses, so that the reader can make comparisons regarding different authors treatment of similar material, within the same school of acting. The Syntheses: Based on …

Steps Of Speech Preparation Recommended In "Fundamentals Of Speech" Textbooks Correlated With Frequency Of Usage By Selected Clergymen, James Walter Lohr Feb 1968

Steps Of Speech Preparation Recommended In "Fundamentals Of Speech" Textbooks Correlated With Frequency Of Usage By Selected Clergymen, James Walter Lohr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In writing textbooks for “Fundamentals of Speech" courses ln colleges and universities, most authors recommend identifiable steps in speech preparation. The instructor of the basic speech course may wonder whether or not there is agreement among the authors. In guiding their students' preparation of speeches, he may also wonder whether or not speakers in actual practice do follow the recommended steps. Do authors agree on a theory of steps of speech preparation? Do speakers use a theory of steps o speech preparation in the practice of preparing speeches? In order to compare theory and practice, an attempt was made to …

Program Instruction In Use Of Lithographic Camera, Clayton Ransom Kinney Feb 1968

Program Instruction In Use Of Lithographic Camera, Clayton Ransom Kinney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Programmed learning is probably as old as mankind. In theory the essentials of this method consist of three major interdependent factors; 1) immediate feedback or knowledge to the learner of the adequacy of the responses, 2) the presenting of material in small enough units to allow rapid assimilation and reinforcement, and 3) the arrangement of such units in a sequence which continues to build upon and reinforce the prior learning. It would be difficult to believe that some of the more apt to teach of any generation would not have capitalized upon such a program in presenting to an apprentice …

The Effect Of A Progressive Weight Program For College Women On Selected Basketball Skills, Karen Mae Kaberna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a progressive weight training program for college freshman women, upon accuracy of shooting the one-hand set shot and the accuracy and speed of executing the chest pass in basketball. Strength of the upper arms and shoulder girdle was also investigated. Thirty-three students were selected randomly from volunteers of the freshman women enrolled in the freshman physical education program at South Dakota State University. Two groups were equated by a strength test designed by the writer, and randomly placed in an experimental or control group. The experimental group participated in …

An Evaluation Of The Pre-College Guidance Received By The College Dropout And The College Persister, Douglas John Soule

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The amount of pre-college information that college dropouts received, as compared to college persisters, was the focal point of this study. This factor, along with certain external and internal forces, may determine the extent of college success. The objectives of this investigation have been to determine if there exists differences in the amount of pre-college information college dropouts received as compared to college persisters. Specifically, this investigation will seek answers to the following questions: 1. Is there a difference in the number of visits the dropout and the persister had with his high school counselor? 2. Is there a difference …

Responses Of Tall And Semi-Dwarf Spring Wheats To Levels Of Nitrogen And Moisture Supply, Vanrat Sompaew

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wheat is one of the principal cash crops in South Dakota, producing annually about 36,600,000 bushels on approximately 2,050,000 acres. Two of the major problems confronting wheat. High yielding semi-dwarfs from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico offer breeders and producers in South Dakota short straw and high yielding ability. The semi-dwarfs promise to be better suited for irrigated production than tall varieties. Their performance under natural rainfall is of interest as well for most wheat acreage in South Dakota will not be irrigated. The use of commercial …
