  2. There will be no significant differences between the Self-Satisfaction Scores of the experimental group and those of the control group on the pre-test and the …

A Comparative Study Of Ribonuclease From Two Winter Barley Cultivars Based Upon Separation, Purification And Partial Characterization Of Rna-Degrading Enzymes, Raymond Sze-Chung Wong Jan 1975

A Comparative Study Of Ribonuclease From Two Winter Barley Cultivars Based Upon Separation, Purification And Partial Characterization Of Rna-Degrading Enzymes, Raymond Sze-Chung Wong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The differences in the response to KCl of the RNA-degrading enzymes of two barley cultivars, “Dicktoo” (a hardy type) and "Tennessee Winter” (a non-hardy type), were investigated. Two types of enzymes, ribonuclease (RNase) and nuclease, were separated from crude extracts by disc electrophoresis. The electrophoretic gels were assayed for RNA-degrading activity in the presence and absence of EDTA (EDTA is a nuclease inhibitor). By means of density gradient isoelectric focusing, the nuclease preparation from Tennessee Winter was shown to have an isoelectric point between 5.3 and 5.5, while the nuclease preparation from Dicktoo has three isoelectric points of 4.9, 5.5 …

Computer Simulation Of Western Equine Encephalitis Virus Transmission To Horses In South Dakota By The Culex Tarsalis Mosquito, Richard Frank Schryer Jan 1975

Computer Simulation Of Western Equine Encephalitis Virus Transmission To Horses In South Dakota By The Culex Tarsalis Mosquito, Richard Frank Schryer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research is an attempt to develop a computer simulation model that will be capable of illustrating the effect of various factors on the outcome of a simulated equine encephalitis epidemic. It is intended that through computer simulation techniques, I will become possible to better understand the factors that contribute to or reduce the magnitude gained of an encephalitis epidemic in horses. Subsequently, the knowledge gained by computer simulation could provide the groundwork for the development of a model that will be capable of projecting the likelihood of an epidemic based on mosquito populations and WEE infection rates as they …

The Relationship Of Freestyle Sprinting Ability In Swimming To Selected Measurable Traits, Keith Charles Sutton Jan 1975

The Relationship Of Freestyle Sprinting Ability In Swimming To Selected Measurable Traits, Keith Charles Sutton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Through reading previous studies, corresponding and talking with respected swimming coaches, and drawing from personal experience, the present writer identified and tested physical traits thought to influence a swimmer’s speed. Although muscular strength of the arms and good flexibility have long been accepted by most coaches as an asset to the speed swimmer, the other variable were selected on the basis of their anticipated relationship to swimming speed. The purpose of this study was to investigate, by means of objective tests, the relationship of selected physical characteristics to performance by swimmers in a forty-five yard freestyle sprint.

Tetrazoline Chemistry, Norman Wallace Rokke Jan 1975

Tetrazoline Chemistry, Norman Wallace Rokke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It was of interest to investigate the chemistry of some tetrazolines since they might be sources of heteroatomic analogues of trimethylenemethane. In addition, they might provide alternate means of synthesis of small ring compounds such as diaziridinones and diaziridineimines. New compounds which were prepared are 1-(2,6-dimethylphenyl) tetrazoline-5-one, 1-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-4-methyltetrazoline-5-one, l-phenyl-4-methyl-5-iminotetrazoline, l-phenyl-4-methyl-5- methyliminotetrazoline, and l-phenyl-4-methyl-5-methyliminotetrazoline methiodide. The mass spectra of the tetrazolines investigated are characterized by ring fragmentations which are helpful in determining their structure. In addition, fragmentation represents one of the few examples of a retro-1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction initiated by electron impact. The monosubstituted tetrazolines are thermally unstable. The course of …

Cytopathology Of Barley And Corn Leaf Tissue Infected With The Nd18 Strain Of Barley Stripe Mosaic Virus, Charles R. Mcmullen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The distribution of the ND18 strain of barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and corn (Zea mays L.) leaf tissue was studied with light and electron microscopes. Virions were detected in the cytoplasm of barley mesophyll cells, subsidiary, guard and epidermal cells, vascular parenchyma cells, sieve and tracheary elements. Nuclear virus was found in barley mesophyll cells. Ultrastructural cytopathological changes were greatest in the inoculated leaf of barley which contained fewer virus particles than either primary acute or chronically infected tissues. Primary acute and chronically infected barley tissues contained intracellular virions scattered in the cytoplasm, in …

The present study was conducted to determine if the protein level of layer diets could be lowered from the: commonly used 16 percent to 12 percent by supplementation of some of the essential amino acids without reducing the performance of hens. The amino acids used were methionine, lysine, tryptophan and isoleucine. Egg production, egg shell thickness, interior egg quality, body weight, feed efficiency and free amino acid content of the albumen of eggs produced were criteria used to measure the (--) to treatment.

Integrated Numerical Simulation Of Drip Irrigation With Subsurface Drainage, James Ray Hoover Jan 1975

Integrated Numerical Simulation Of Drip Irrigation With Subsurface Drainage, James Ray Hoover

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A numerical method and model were developed to simulate soil moisture during steady-state and transient flow toward a tile drain. Intermittent application of water by drip irrigation and rainfall were simulated by use of finite difference approximation equations. No known analytical solution for these flow situations exists because of the complex mathematics describing unsaturated flow in the soil. The computer model is based on the electrical resistance network analog. The explicit finite difference equations were solved by the successive over-relaxation method for steady-state flow and by iteration for transient soil moisture flow. The computer program for the model consists of …

A Study Of Factors Associated With Outdoor Recreational Participation In South Dakota, James W. Delong Jan 1975

A Study Of Factors Associated With Outdoor Recreational Participation In South Dakota, James W. Delong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Participation by South Dakotans in selected areas of outdoor recreation was studied to determine varying extents of participation and associated selected sociodemographic, socialization and attitudinal factors. A statewide random sample of 474 heads-of-households (or their spouses) was selected and interviewed using a pretested schedule. The findings were present in three forms: a descriptive summary, a nonparametric analysis of association and a multivariate analysis. The descriptive analysis revealed fishing, hunting and lakeside camping or picnicking to be the activities participated in most frequently. Conversely, water-skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling were participated in least. Analysis of association showed that each of the …

Interactions Of Rhenium(V) Chloride And Oxotrichlorobis(Triphenlyphosphine)Rhenium(V) With Selected Solvents, Paul Luther Holm Jan 1975

Interactions Of Rhenium(V) Chloride And Oxotrichlorobis(Triphenlyphosphine)Rhenium(V) With Selected Solvents, Paul Luther Holm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the solution interactions of rhenium(V) chloride and oxotrichlorobis(triphenylphosphine)rhenium(V) in a continuation of studies of rhenium(V) chemistry. These goals were accomplished using vacuum line and Schlenk tube techniques. As a result of this work, rhenium(V) chloride was found to dissolve with reaction in 1, 4-dioxane, diethyl ether and acetone. There was only a very small amount of rhenium(V) chloride which dissolved in carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and cyclohexane. Part of what did dissolve was shown by electronic and infrared spectroscopy to be oxotetrachlororhenium(VI) which was present as an impurity in small amounts. Oxotetrachlororhenium(VI) reacts …

Free Will And Destiny In Chaucer, Irvine Lee Patten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This short comparison of a very old and a very new philosophy has been by way of introduction to my own topic, in a study which I hope will demonstrate some important aspects of how we have examined the extent of own responsibility in shaping our fate. My focus will be on the late Middle Ages and specifically on three of Chaucer’s works as they are borrowed in plot and character from Boccaccio, and how they are reworked to show the importance of moral self-determination. These works are Troilus and Creseyda, The Knight’s Tale, and The Monk’s Tale as they …
