The population studied included the academic deans from 10 Virginia community colleges and the principals of representative public secondary and vocational schools from each …
John Donne's Use Of Numbers., Paula Yuhr Lincoln
John Donne's Use Of Numbers., Paula Yuhr Lincoln
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
John Donne wanted to live the leisurely life of a gentleman undisturbed by financial difficulties, devoting his life to entertaining his audience with his witty insights into life and, especially, love. However, his marriage, which was frowned upon by traditional society as a betrayal of his professional (tutorial) trust, and the subsequent arrival of his children on an annual basis, put him in the very modern dilemma of the man who does not have the money to support his preferred life-style. His family had been staunchly Roman Catholic and so, although he had been educated at Oxford, he left without …

The Adjustment Of Foreign Students At Sdsu, Mansour Haghighatian
The Adjustment Of Foreign Students At Sdsu, Mansour Haghighatian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A visible and significant subset of the student body of many U.S. institutions of higher education is its foreign student population. These students come from a wide variety of cultures and as Skinner & Hendricks have put it, "Despite the variety of views of foreign students Americans may have, Americans have a common feeling that the foreign student is somehow different, a 'they' and not a 'we' ". The foreign student is different because he/she is from culture that has different values, traditions and different codes of behavior and guides for conduct. Meleis asserts that ''whereas American business-people need know …

The Chinese Radio And Television Stations In The United States : A Historical Exploration, Lin Liang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Historically, Chinese immigration to the United States began in around 1850, even though immigration statistics in the United States showed that forty Chinese had arrived before the news reached Hong Kong that gold had been discovered in California in the spring of 1848. As the gold rush tapered off in the early 1860s, the Chinese soon filled in as general laborers, domestic servants, cooks, and gardeners. However, they found opposition from the white laborers in the mining camps as early as 1852, and they were denied eligibility for citizenship. The need to be aided and protected was great. All of …

Attitudes Of South Dakota Home Economics Teachers Toward The Use Of Microcomputers, Mary J. Pickard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The project was designed to assess attitudes of South Dakota secondary home economics teachers toward computers. Attitude was assessed using an instrument developed by David Ahl for measuring public feeling toward computers. Hypotheses relating attitude to educational background, size of school, years of teaching experience, and exposure to and availability of computers were tested. A secondary purpose was to determine teacher preference for learning how to use computers. A random sample of home economics teachers in 108 schools received the survey instrument. The sample was stratified according to school size. The majority of schools, 90 percent, had computers. However, only …

Effects And Interactions Of Nitrogen And Soil Moisture Status Under A High Yield Irrigated Corn Environment, Dwayne L. Beck
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A two-part study was conducted during the 1979 and 1980 growing seasons on irrigated lands adjoining the Missouri River in central South Dakota. Empirical [sic] models were developed to describe the response of irrigated corn (Zea mays L.) to soil water status and nitrogen fertilization at a location recently developed for sprinkler irrigation. Nitrogen fertilizer rates of 0, 100, 200, and 400 kg of N/ha were used under water treatments consisting of a 2.5 cm irrigation when soil water matric potential at a depth of 40 cm decreased to -35, -50, and -75 kPa. Yield differences due to soil water …

Doodles On The Walls Of The Cave : An Interpretation Of Four Popular Novels, Carole Krysan

Movies and moviegoing have been a part of American culture for more than eighty-five years, but the movies as a way of life in America perhaps reached its peak in the period from 1945-1955. This was the post World War II era when there were as many as 90,000,000 paid admissions per week from a population of 150,000,000. By the end of this decade, attendance had dropped to 42,000,000 due mainly to …
