The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell Jan 1931

The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the historical accuracy of Robert Hugh Benson's historical novels "The King's Achievement," "Come Rack! Come Rope!," and "By What Authority," arguing that despite their fictional romantic elements, these novels authentically portray the historical relationship between the English and Catholic Churches during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Bell opens by distinguishing the aims of the historian from those of the novelist, then situates Benson biographically as a convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism whose religious sensibility shaped his literary work.

Drawing on the "Lingard-Belloc History of England" as an authoritative historical source, the thesis traces the …

The Madrigal., Frank B. Martin Jan 1930

The Madrigal., Frank B. Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The madrigal is the oldest of concerted secular forms. It had its origin in northern Italy, perhaps as early as the twelfth century. The early compositions had none of the elaborate devices which characterize the madrigals of the sixteenth century. Francesco di Landino, (1325-1390), an Italian, and the leading musician of the Florentine school of his time, wrote a madrigal, Tu che l'opera d'altrul, an extract of which appears in Fellowes' English Madrigal (1) Composers. Landino's life is interesting. He was blind from youth, but was organist for many years in the church of San Lorenzo in Florence. His madrigal …

History Of Grenada (1830-1880), Rebecca Martin Stokes Jun 1929

History Of Grenada (1830-1880), Rebecca Martin Stokes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The object of this thesis is to give not only a history correct as to fact, but also to paint a picture, or rather a series of pictures that shall pass before the reader in a chronological manner presenting a living panorama of the history of Grenada; its first settlers, customs, education, religion, achievements, disasters, and development from the time the Red Man was pushed back and the White Man entered, to the overflow of carpet-bag rule.

The pioneers of Grenada were a dauntless race of men with souls to dare all the dangers and difficulties of frontier life, in …

Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads Jan 1929

Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Before entering upon a discussion of those writers of the Elizabethan Age whose works present specific instances of Personal Retractation, let us turn our attention to the problem in general and try to find out why writers of this age and of earlier times felt it necessary to repent of their literary efforts. Some critics may say that retractation was merely a literary convention; and why bother about its beginnings, sources, et cetera? Others may have the opinion that it was a personal trait, only a means of satisfying some peculiar whim or fancy of the author. Some may go …

Truancy In The Public Schools : Its Cause And Cure., Kathleen Miller Jan 1929

Truancy In The Public Schools : Its Cause And Cure., Kathleen Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this age in which we live it is not hard to find a problem but it is often difficult to choose one. These problems have arisen as a result of the complex social and industrial institutions which have evolved as a result of human inventiveness and the competition among men to better our living conditions and increase our comforts. According to statistics compiled by the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the proportion of those who enjoy these modern conveniences is small when compared to those who have suffered as a result. The problem of this study is one which …

Sketches Of Robert Browning's Women., Mame Morris Boulware Jan 1929

Sketches Of Robert Browning's Women., Mame Morris Boulware

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

No other poet has given to the world such a diversity of woman characters as has Robert Browning. Longing for variety he represents his womanhood, not in classes but by individual differentiation; he portrays the simple, the complex, the subtle, the particular, the impulsive and others--each distinct from the rest. Browning emphasizes natural charms less than intellectual and moral loveliness. He strives to depict women as they are in themselves. By suggestions of spiritual nature, by delicate workmanship, he sets his feminine character before us. With dexterous versatility he creates type after type, each a character in herself. Two of …

Hydrogen Ion Concentration In Lead Acetate Solutions., Emile Pragoff 1907-1991 Jan 1929

Hydrogen Ion Concentration In Lead Acetate Solutions., Emile Pragoff 1907-1991

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It shall be the object of this investigation to measure the hydrogen ion concentration in lead acetate solutions and to apply the measurements to the control of color in the preparation of chrome yellow pigments. Lead acetate solutions of high concentration, known as lead liquors, are used in the preparation of chrome yellows by precipitation with sodium dichromate. Since the color of the pigment is believed to be dependent on the hydrogen ion concentration of the lead acetate solution used, such a study is of interest to dry-color manufacturers and to users of chrome yellows. The methods now in use …

The Negro In Literature, A. W. Arnaud May 1928

The Negro In Literature, A. W. Arnaud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces the development of the Negro in American literature from its origins in the spirituals through the flowering of the "New Negro" Renaissance of the early twentieth century. Arnaud opens by defining literature as the artistic record of a people's inner life and argues that Negro literary expression developed first through song, tracing the movement from oral spirituals through the early poetry of the enslaved and freed population toward increasingly sophisticated literary forms.

The thesis presents Paul Laurence Dunbar as the foremost early exponent of Negro poetry, examining his biography and his work in both classic English verse …

The Preparation Of Derivatives Related To Novocain., Helen Peil Jan 1927

The Preparation Of Derivatives Related To Novocain., Helen Peil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of the relationship between chemical constitution and physiological effect embraces many very interesting problems which are, however, frequently difficult to solve. In the investigation of any drug the first step is to determine the principle to which the physiological effect is due, and then by analysis and synthesis assign the correct chemical constitution to this principle. When the chemical constitution is definitely known, other compounds of a similar structure may be prepared, and their physiological action compared with the original drug. By this means it is sometimes possible to prepare drugs which possess the principle desired in the …

The Hecyra Of Terence., Jonah W. D. Skiles Jan 1926

The Hecyra Of Terence., Jonah W. D. Skiles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In submitting this thesis, the writer does not pretend to have made even an approximation of exhaustive study of the Hecyra: this thesis is merely a study of the play from certain viewpoints which also make no claim to completeness. No originality is claimed for the discussion of Terence and of the Hecyra. The rest of the thesis has a fair claim to originality in that it’s the product of the writer’s research, aided of course by various comments and notes. The translation is especially indebted to the Latin paraphrase in the Delphin Classics and to various notes and synonyms …

Shakespeare's Elizabethan Public., Joseph Anderson Burns Jan 1925

Shakespeare's Elizabethan Public., Joseph Anderson Burns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Of all the arts drama is the most democratic. Other forms of artistic and aesthetic expression, literature, music, painting, may be cultivated in solitude. Not so the drama. It is demanded by the public; produced for the public and unless it is approved by the public its doom is certain. Why it is that the drama cannot at any time break away from the tastes, prejudices, and ideals of the public for which it was written, M. Edelstand Du Meril has clearly state: “But the inspiration of the work (the drama) hasn’t at all that egotistical spirit, disdainful of the …
