Comparisons Of Ear Corn And Shelled Corn In Various Types Of Rations For Finishing Cattle, Gary Bruce Haiwick
Comparisons Of Ear Corn And Shelled Corn In Various Types Of Rations For Finishing Cattle, Gary Bruce Haiwick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ruminants were once considered placid animals with the rumen serving as a storehouse for the feeds harvested when favorable weather and freedom from predatory animals permitted, and then retiring to a relatively safe place to ruminate and digest the stored feed. The large capacity and microbial digestion within the rumen enable ruminants to consume and utilize roughages efficiently. A large number of experiments have been conducted during the past several years to determine the effects of proportion of concentrates to roughages on rate and efficiency of production by cattle. Alfalfa hay is widely used in finishing rations for cattle and …
Effects Of B Vitamin Deficiencies On Energy Metabolism Of The Chick, William Clarence Lockhart
Effects Of B Vitamin Deficiencies On Energy Metabolism Of The Chick, William Clarence Lockhart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Approximately two decades ago Robertson et al. (1948) reported that high-energy diets supported faster growth of young chicks with an improvement in feeding efficiency. This seemed to open an era in poultry nutrition in which much work was conducted in order to establish the quantitative relationships between dietary energy levels and nutrients. With current emphasis on the energy content of the diet, a knowledge of those factors which interfere with the most efficient utilization of energy is important. Nutritional imbalance was shown by Sure (1941) to decrease the net energy or productive energy content of the diet. The B complex …
An Analysis Of The Comparative Reading Times For 11-Pica And 15-Pica Copy, Jack Wesley Nuckols
An Analysis Of The Comparative Reading Times For 11-Pica And 15-Pica Copy, Jack Wesley Nuckols
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research concerning reading speed, type size, leading, and line width has been conducted in a systematic way for the past 50 years. The Minnesota eye-movement camera was used to reveal the specific patterns of eye movements involved in reading optimal versus non-optimal lines widths. In contradiction to Tinker and Paterson, Matthew Luckiesh and Frank Moss concluded that the readability of 10-point Text type with 2 points of leading diminishes as the length of line is increased from 13 to about 21 picas; and that further increases in the line length result in less important changes in readability. Leading (spacing between …
Student Attitudes Toward The Printing Industry In Two Chicago Area High Schools, Frank Arthur Ouseley
Student Attitudes Toward The Printing Industry In Two Chicago Area High Schools, Frank Arthur Ouseley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Before considering the importance of attitudinal measurement it would be helpful to define what an attitude is and subsequently how this definition relates to the measurement of attitudes. Ingles, after an intensive investigation concerning the fruitfulness of teaching history, concluded that the attitudes developed through the study of history are probably considerable more important than the specific knowledge that the student has acquired during his training. The implications from his rather generalized interpretations are of unlimited importance. Another reason why attitudinal measurement is important concerns the effects which attitudes have on the learning process. Learning takes place only when information …
Ability Of Consumers To Ascertain "Quality" In Printing, Lawrence E. Mades
Ability Of Consumers To Ascertain "Quality" In Printing, Lawrence E. Mades
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Before considering the measurement of quality printing it would be helpful to develop a clear concept of just what quality means to the average printer. To many printers the word “quality” is a crutch on which they lean for support, and it is not a goal toward which they strive. An often heard definition for quality in industry is “A means of manufacturing, to a consistent standard, the lowest quality product which the public will accept.” Whether a printing firm is large or small, it cannot avoid being concerned with quality level and quality variation. Since all defects or variations …
The Effect Of Positive And Negative Motivation Upon Selected Measures Of Circulorespiratory Adjustment And All-Out Running Performance, Stanley E. Richter
The Effect Of Positive And Negative Motivation Upon Selected Measures Of Circulorespiratory Adjustment And All-Out Running Performance, Stanley E. Richter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of motivational techniques to increase physical performance has long been advocated by individuals in the physical education and coaching professions. Jokl concerned himself with a description of clinical findings in three Olympic athletes who attained success in international competition even though they were afflicted with major physical abnormalities. He felt that motivation was an intangible factor in human performance and that all outstanding performances raise the question of motivation. Strong, when determining the effect of six motivating conditions on the performance of sixth grade children on seven physical fitness tests, found that motivation improved boy’s performance more than …
A Study Of The Food Practices, Economic Position, And Conception Of Health On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Kenneth H. Skogen
A Study Of The Food Practices, Economic Position, And Conception Of Health On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Kenneth H. Skogen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Teton Dakota Indians of the northern Great Plains have stirred the imagination of the people in America since they were first encountered by the early explorers. The frontiersmen found them living in the woodlands of the western Great Lakes where they were settled farmers. A century of warfare between the Chippewa and the Dakotas finally came to an end when the former group had occupied the woodland farms of northern Minnesota and the latter had migrated on to the plains. After wandering and fighting as they retreated westward, the Teton Dakotas were gradually transformed from peaceful woodsmen into skilled …
An Investigation Of 10 Selected Weekly And Small Daily Newspapers Pinted By Offset Lithography And Methods And Equipment Used In Their Production, Charles Allen Ridgeway
An Investigation Of 10 Selected Weekly And Small Daily Newspapers Pinted By Offset Lithography And Methods And Equipment Used In Their Production, Charles Allen Ridgeway
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The subject of offset (lithography), whether applied to commercial printing or newspaper production, is a fascinating one. The fascination stems from the fact that offset is perhaps a misunderstood method of producing printing or newspapers. Resistance to change has caused much of the misunderstanding. The principle on which offset is based is the mutual repellence of water and greasy substances. The rapid strides of offset as a printing process have resulted from improvements in materials and equipment. Improvements have been made in film, paper, chemicals, cameras, presses, and in more scientific knowledge of the process. Innovations to the letterpress method …
Effects Of Wind On Falling Drops, Charles Russell Umback
Effects Of Wind On Falling Drops, Charles Russell Umback
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Soil erosion studies have proceeded along two basic paths in-so-far as erosion by water is concerned: 1. the measurement of soil loss and runoff caused by natural rainstorms, with pertinent characteristics of those storms and 2. The measurement of such losses when caused by artificially produced storms of arbitrarily selected characteristics. The first provides the measure for the magnitude and variability of storms as they actually occur in a given, as well as accurate measurement of losses produced by a particular storm type and intensity on a given condition of plots. The second type of storm can be produced almost …
Derivation Of The Diffusion Equation And A Revision Of Matsuda's Theory For Polarography, W. Patrick Rahilly
Derivation Of The Diffusion Equation And A Revision Of Matsuda's Theory For Polarography, W. Patrick Rahilly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many theories have been proposed to yield a current-time relationship in Polarography. The most widely accepted is that of Matsuda. He assumes that the electrolyte can be separated into an inhomogeneous region about the mercury drop and a homogeneous region elsewhere. This assumption leads to a first order , nonlinear, ordinary differential equation directly solvable by substitution of a properly chosen series. But the series solution obtained is only a particular solution; for there exists, as one would expect, a family of solutions depending on a contrast of integration. In the literature, derivation of the diffusion equation has never been …
An Analysis Of The Production Output Difference Between An 11-Pica And A 15-Pica Line Width, Albert George Leicht
An Analysis Of The Production Output Difference Between An 11-Pica And A 15-Pica Line Width, Albert George Leicht
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Considerable research has been done on newspapers in the areas of type sizes, typefaces, leading between lines, readability, legibility and column widths. Tinker and Paterson conducted another study to determine the influence of line width and leading on the speed of reading 9-point type. The results indicate that optimal rate of reading occurs with line widths of 14 to 30 picas and with 1 to 4 pints leading. The Tinker and Paterson studies dealt with reading speed, the Murphy study concerned the proportion of readers who actually read the stories in the alternate forms, and the Hvistendahl study concerned reader …
Phosphorous Uptake By Oat Seedlings From Phosphorus Fertilizer Applied To A Subsoil As Affected By Soil Moisture, Dean E. Wesley
Phosphorous Uptake By Oat Seedlings From Phosphorus Fertilizer Applied To A Subsoil As Affected By Soil Moisture, Dean E. Wesley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is an outgrowth of preliminary investigation by Hovland and Wesley to determine environmental conditions required by plants to establish vegetative cover on highway back slopes. From the nutritional phase of this study it was determined that nitrogen and phosphorus were the only deficient elements in the four exposed subsoils that were investigated. Deficient nutrients are supplied to exposed subsoils by the application of commercial fertilizer. The fertilizer is usually applied on the soil surface and seldom worked more than a few inches down onto the soil. In th Northern Great Plains, this zone of fertilizer placement dries out …
Laboratory Rearing Of Western Corn Rootworms And Hybridization Of The Western Corn Rootworm (Diabrotica Virgifera) And Northern Corn Rootworm (D. Longicornis) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Ada Mae Hintz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Corn rootworms are beetles of the family Chrysomelidae, genus Diabrotica whose larvae feed on the roots of corn. Large populations of the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera Leconte, recently developed in Nebraska and surrounding states, thus increasing the economic importance of these insects. Widespread soil insecticide treatments for both species were adopted after 1951 and have become widely accepted. Considering their economic importance, little is recorded about the biology of rootworms. Perhaps this is because they are soil insects. This study was undertaken to provide some of the basic information necessary to research on better methods of control. Members …
The Design And Construction Of A 6-Inch Mach-Zehnder Type Interferometer And Its Use For A Study In Free Convection, Clayton W. Knofczynski
The Design And Construction Of A 6-Inch Mach-Zehnder Type Interferometer And Its Use For A Study In Free Convection, Clayton W. Knofczynski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heat transfer by free convection is a commonly encountered phenomenon and yet is difficult to analyze and evaluate. It would prove interesting and informative to obtain a view of the disturbance in the field of flow, and also quantitative data to evaluate temperature variations and analyze the heat transferred. Therefore it was proposed to build a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, not only to give a “picture” of the phenomenon but also to supply sufficient information to determine temperature distribution in the flow field and aid in the determination of the free convection coefficient. Such a versatile instrument is the Mach-Zehnder interferometer which …
A Procedure For The Determination And Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Accident Frequency Rates, Extent Of Experience And Chronological Age Of Operative Personnel, William Wayne Rasmussen
A Procedure For The Determination And Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Accident Frequency Rates, Extent Of Experience And Chronological Age Of Operative Personnel, William Wayne Rasmussen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1963 it was estimated that occupational injuries cost employers $4.5 billion. An additional $1 billion to $4 billion in wages were lost by employee depending on what one wishes to include. Based on a Gross National Product of approximately $585 billion in 1963, this injury cost represents a potential increase in the Gross National Product of approximately one percent. It appears that this is certainly one area of waste which would warrant further investigation, particularly in light of the present day nationwide drive for economic growth. If younger workers are indeed more susceptible to accidents, the injury costs cited …
The Nature Of The Suspension Effect, With Special Reference To Clay Suspensions, Gary E. Spalding
The Nature Of The Suspension Effect, With Special Reference To Clay Suspensions, Gary E. Spalding
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The recent development of practical cation-sensitive glass electrodes prompted the writer to investigate the feasibility of their application to the monitoring of nutrient-cation activities in natural soils. It soon became evident that the nature of the suspension effect must be more clearly understood if such application were to yield meaningful results. The suspension effect may be defined as the pH of solution in equilibrium with a suspension minus the pH of the suspension, both pH values being measured potentiometrically. Two theories have been advanced to explain the cause of the suspension effect: the observed pH difference is real, the observed …
The Effects Of A Cold Sitz Bath On Various Measures Of Circulorespiratory Recovery From Vigorous Exercise, William Charles Talich
The Effects Of A Cold Sitz Bath On Various Measures Of Circulorespiratory Recovery From Vigorous Exercise, William Charles Talich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In previous years several studies have been undertaken to determine the effects of various ambient temperatures on physical performance. These studies, employing either the application of hot baths and showers, or cold sprays, abdominal packs, showers, or hip baths, have been conducted on individuals immediately before and after work performance. Hegle investigated the effect of immersion in a heated whirlpool bath on arm and shoulder girdle strength, generic endurance, and reaction time at four different time intervals (30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes). Nukada studied the effects of heat upon the upper arm using a standard submaximal tension. In a …
The Effect Of Change In Moisture Content On The Load Carrying Capacity Of Three Member Nailed Wood Joints, William Theodore Welchert
The Effect Of Change In Moisture Content On The Load Carrying Capacity Of Three Member Nailed Wood Joints, William Theodore Welchert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis involves the study of the effect of change in moisture content on the load carrying capacity of three member nailed wood joints. New wood truss designs developed today can be tested with truss breaking equipment. Precise structural data on wood joints in extended service conditions are inadequate to justify enthusiasm for design precision. In agricultural construction and other utility buildings, wood-nailed trusses are extensively used because of their simplicity and economy. The weakest and most unpredictable parts of a nailed-wood truss are likely to be in the joints. Thus, the logical point for design improvement is the joint. …
The Total Energy Capacity And The Instantaneous Energy Release In Springs, Suhayl M. Mamoun
The Total Energy Capacity And The Instantaneous Energy Release In Springs, Suhayl M. Mamoun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research project is to determine the total energy absorption capacity of the various types of mechanical springs in terms of mathematical equations, and use of these equations to find the instantaneous energy release. The importance of springs as machine elements stems from the fact that they can be used for absorbing mechanical energy. It must be clearly recognized that the development of the energy equations, as far as springs are concerned, is nothing but a means to an end: that the energy storing capacity of a spring should be considered as one of the primary aspects …
A New Partial Differential Equation And A New Instantaneous Current-Time Curve For Polarography, Russell B. Kidman
A New Partial Differential Equation And A New Instantaneous Current-Time Curve For Polarography, Russell B. Kidman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Present theories describing polarography processes are inadequate for, they do not correctly predict experimental results. However, this use of the average conceals how poorly the instantaneous time-dependence of the diffusion current is represented. Accordingly this paper attempts to illuminate the situation and do what it can to remedy the problem. Some authors have sought to make theory agree with experiment by improving the approximate solution of the accepted partial differential equation. Such attempts have met with little success in predicting the instantaneous current. The present paper points out a flaw inherent in the accepted p.d.e. A few workers have adopted …
A Comparison Of Interval Running And All-Out Running As Methods Of Increasing Circulorespiratory Endurance, Donald Lee Kortan
A Comparison Of Interval Running And All-Out Running As Methods Of Increasing Circulorespiratory Endurance, Donald Lee Kortan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The athletic coach, the physical educator, and the athlete of today have definite professional interest in the circulorespiratory aspect of physical conditioning. Improving endurance for competition is of great interest and importance as the coach, the physical educator, and the athlete each wise to know how endurance can be increased in the shortest possible time. The study of the effects of the fatigue must be continuous and the results placed into practice to insure healthy individuals, meaningful practice, and effective game participation. Many studies in physiology have dealt with methods of improving muscular strength and endurance. The purpose of this …
