Corn Desiccation As A Means Of Reducing Drying Cost, Steven Earl De Hoogh Jan 1976

Corn Desiccation As A Means Of Reducing Drying Cost, Steven Earl De Hoogh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A dramatic increase in the cost of petroleum and an awareness that petroleum supply is limited has occurred during the past few years. The increased cost of petroleum products has increased farmers’ production costs. Furthermore, the limited supply of petroleum products has focused attention on ways of conserving energy. Researchers are looking for ways to harness “new” forms of energy and to make them available to consumers as a reasonable cost. Solar energy is one of the “new” forms of energy that is being studies extensively. Solar heaters are being evaluated to supplement conventional corn dryers. Nevertheless, solar drying is …

The research reported herein includes examination of 37 bovine E. coli strains to determine entero pathogenicity and the reliability of different assay methods, characterization of bovine LT ad comparison of bovine LT with porcine LT, comparison of three culture media to determine which one provides maximum ST production, and partial purification …

Physiological Responses And Thermal Comfort Of Subjects In A Tractor Cab, Kenton Richard Kaufman Jan 1976

Physiological Responses And Thermal Comfort Of Subjects In A Tractor Cab, Kenton Richard Kaufman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

P.O. Fanger of Denmark was the first scientist to generalize the physiological basis for predicting human thermal comfort based on activity level, clothing type, air temperature, air velocity, mean radiant temperature, and air humidity. Thus any activity level and clothing type, it is possible to determine combinations of air temperature, mean radiant temperature, air humidity and relative air velocity which would produce optimum thermal comfort. The Fanger approach has been applied successfully to offices and buildings. It would be quite useful to demonstrate that Fanger’s concepts could be applied to tractor cabs. The objectives of this study were as follows: …

Criticism Of The Liberal Intellectual In The Political Fiction Of Mary Mccarthy, Terrill Hyde Huntington Jan 1976

Criticism Of The Liberal Intellectual In The Political Fiction Of Mary Mccarthy, Terrill Hyde Huntington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For more than thirty years, Mary McCarthy has served as the conscience of the liberal American intellectual. McCarthy’s method of writing is satire, and she treats both her sympathetic and unsympathetic characters satirically. The characters in her fiction are generally liberal intellectuals who follow one of two patterns. The sympathetic characters are those who, despite their flaws, endeavor to be conscientious, objective and truth seeking. They are plagued by self-doubt and constant awareness o their own limitations. In contrast, her unsympathetic characters are egotistical and self-deluding. Their intellectual capabilities are bent not toward fulfillment of their liberal and humanitarian ideals, …

The age structure of the sample was 69:26:45:15:4:3 for age classes zero through five, respectively. Minimum breeding age for female beaver was 2.5 years. Seventy-eight percent of all females (>2.5 years old) collected after the breeding season contained corpora lutea and viable fetuses. …

A Study Of Milk Composition In South Dakota, Jeng-Jung Yee Jan 1976

A Study Of Milk Composition In South Dakota, Jeng-Jung Yee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The composition of cow's milk, including both the fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) content, is known to vary over rather broad ranges. Breed and individuality of the cow are the major factors influencing this, but many other factors are known to exert their influence. However, it has generally been observed that compensation or complementing occurs when the milk of cows is mixed together; so that the composition of milk from a herd will tend toward averages or norms. This effect usually is even more marked as the milk from two or more herds is commingled. Payment for milk on the basis …

An Analog Technique For Soil-Tool Systems, Lyle L. Jensen Jan 1976

An Analog Technique For Soil-Tool Systems, Lyle L. Jensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the history of agriculture man has sought improved methods of tilling soil. Technological developments in recent years have enabled man to apply large amounts of mechanical energy to soil tillage. But, as the energy limitations of the world begin to be realized, the development of more efficient means of soil tillage will become increasingly important. In tillage machine design, as in other engineering design fields, the designer has three basic methods of predicting the performance of a system. Murphy (12) states these methods as (i) application of existing laws and formulas, (ii) observations on the actual systems, and (iii) …

Viscoelastic Cylindrical Pressure Vessel With Variable Inner Radius, A. N. Joshi Jan 1976

Viscoelastic Cylindrical Pressure Vessel With Variable Inner Radius, A. N. Joshi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to predict from a theoretical basis the stress redistribution processes occurring within the viscoelastic core of a cylindrical pressure vessel reinforced by an elastic casing around the outer perimeter, and subject to internal pressure applied to the time-dependent inner boundary of the cylinder. The problem so stated requires development of a new technique leading to a solution for a mixed boundary value problem for a viscoelastic body occupying an ablating cylindrical y-shaped region. The approach taken in this thesis consists in reduction of a governing integro-differential equation to an equivalent set of algebraic equ3tions …

Detection Of Antibiotic Residues In Bovine Milk, Mark Edward Johnson Jan 1976

Detection Of Antibiotic Residues In Bovine Milk, Mark Edward Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act antibiotics are considered as ·adulterants in milk and milk products. Cultured dairy products cannot be made with milk containing small concentrations -of antibiotics. Also, minute quantities of antibiotics cause allergic reactions in some people. Penicillin is the most common antibiotic to which people are allergic, and penicillin is also the most commonly used antibiotic in the treatment of infections in bovines. Antibiotics, whether injected intravenously or intramuscularly, or infused into the udder of the cow, can be secreted into the milk. It is for this reason that withdrawal times for milk from cows …
