Wetland Characteristics Of Avian Cholera Outbreaks And Surface Water Transfer In The Nebraska Rainwater Basin Area, Brian J. Smith Jan 1988

Wetland Characteristics Of Avian Cholera Outbreaks And Surface Water Transfer In The Nebraska Rainwater Basin Area, Brian J. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Avian Cholera (Pateurella multocida) has infected and killed thousands of migrating waterfowl each year since 1975 in Nebraska’s rainwater basin area. Disease outbreaks in migrating waterfowl populations just prior to the nesting season are of concern to biologists. Feedlots and itner-wetland basin surface water transfer mechanisms of the avian cholera causative agent, P. multocida, were investigated using remote sensing techniques. Wetland basin characteristics (classification type, adjacent landuse, basin landuse, and basin densities) were also investigated for relationships to 1981 avian cholera outbreaks. No surface drainage relationships were found that would permit the transfer of P. multocida from one wetland basin …

Cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an economically important crop in the United States and South Dakota. Native to North America, oil seed varieties of cultivated sunflower are second only to soybeans as a source of vegetable oil. Sunflower seed harvested for both oil and confection in South Dakota was 59,711 hectares (ha) in 1975. This hectarage has increased, stabilized, and during the last six years, has averaged 218,600 ha per year. Sunflower production, however in Minnesota and North Dakota, has decreased during this same period. Sunflower breeding efforts and hybrid development have reached the point where cultivated sunflower has …

The Effect Of Soil Storage Methods And Soil Microbes On Carbofuran And Terbufos Degradation, Muriel Monteleone Runholt Jan 1986

The Effect Of Soil Storage Methods And Soil Microbes On Carbofuran And Terbufos Degradation, Muriel Monteleone Runholt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine optimal soil storage methods for soils used in carbofuran and terbufos degradation studies. The effect of soil microbes on degradation was also observed. An LD50 study, using 22 day old crickets (Acheta domestica), was undertaken to establish the appropriate LC dose for carbofuran in the soil storage studies. A carbofuran use history failure soil and a noninsecticide use history soil of the same type were collected from the SDSU experimental farm in Centerville, South Dakota. After initial degradation and microbial analysis, the soils were stored air-dried and with a moisture level …

Assessment Of The Impact Of The European Corn Borer At Three Locations In South Dakota, David R. Raemisch Jan 1982

Assessment Of The Impact Of The European Corn Borer At Three Locations In South Dakota, David R. Raemisch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The European corn borer (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) varies as an

economically significant pest in South Dakota from south to north. In

the northern part of the state the European corn borer (ECB) is limited

to one generation per year. In contrast, there are localized sites

along the Missouri River in southern South Dakota which usually

experience a substantial second brood population. Infestation by

either first or second brood ECB occurs at different stages in the

developmental sequence of the corn plant. As such, each brood must be

considered separately when assessing relationships between yield loss

and ECB larval cavities within the …

Zinc Uptake In Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Victor Zillmer Aug 1978

Zinc Uptake In Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Victor Zillmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Zinc concentrations in the root, terminal growth, stem, and needles of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were measured in 72 seedlings grown in washed sand, fertilized with Zn(N03)2. Zinc treatment periods were early spring, late spring, and summer. Zinc uptake was the greatest in early spring. Zinc nitrate fertilizer and remaining soil zinc at treatments end had no effect on mycorrhizae, height, or diameter growth. Linear and multiple regressions were derived using residual soil zinc and treatment zinc that can predict zinc concentrations in different plant parts that have r values from .7440 to .8170. Linear regressions for the prediction …

Reactions Of Reduced Glutathione With Some Methylated Selenium Compounds, Nancy Wendt Thiex Jan 1974

Reactions Of Reduced Glutathione With Some Methylated Selenium Compounds, Nancy Wendt Thiex

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium biochemistry has been of general interest since the discovery of selenium as the toxic agent in certain plants, which when ingested by animals causes a definite disease syndrome and even death. Early scientists suggested that the logical place in the body for toxic selenium compounds to attack was at the various sites occupied by sulfur. In 1939 a study was published which indicated that reduced glutathione (GSH), a thiol, protected rats against death from a minimum fatal dose of selenium given as sodium selenite. Since this discovery, the reaction of GSH with various selenium containing compounds has been the …

The Abundance And Seasonal Distribution Of Tabanidae (Diptera) In Spink County, South Dakota, With A Study Of Geographic Variation In Chrysops Aestuans Wulp, Philippe Earl Cobb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is written in two parts. In part one I report on the results of a survey I conducted in Spink County, South Dakota, to determine the abundance and seasonal distributions of horse flies and deer flies (Diptera: Tabanidae), which bother livestock and people. The proposed Oahe Unit of the Pick-Sloan Missouri River Basin Program will provide many additional acres of tabanid habitat to this area. This survey could be compared with future studies in determining the effects additional acres of tabanid habitat will have had on the populations' levels. The second part of my thesis is an attempt …

Biology And Ecology Of False Wireworms In South Dakota (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Carrol Otto Calkins Jan 1973

Biology And Ecology Of False Wireworms In South Dakota (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Carrol Otto Calkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

False wireworms were important pests of wheat on the Great Plains during the early 20th century. Until recently, they were of little importance; however, they are now occasionally appearing in damaging proportions. The purpose of studying the biological and ecological aspects of these insects in South Dakota was to understand the factors responsible for their demise and the circumstances that could affect the recurrence of damaging populations. The more common species of false wireworms found in South Dakota during this study were Eleodes suturalis (Say), E. opaca (Say), E. hispilabris (Say), E. tricostata (Say), E. extricata (Say), E. obsoleta (Say), …

Biological Studies Of The Bumblebees Of Eastern South Dakota, Francis Paul Andress Jan 1972

Biological Studies Of The Bumblebees Of Eastern South Dakota, Francis Paul Andress

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most individuals over the age of 10 have had some experience with the large, colorful Hymenoptera known as bumblebees. Because bumblebees are important pollinators of crops, and wild and native flowers both in the United States and foreign countries, many aspects of their life cycle have been studied. Both Nebraska and Wisconsin have research bulletins covering identification, distribution, emergence, and floral hosts of the bumblebees of their respective states. The lack of information about bumblebees in South Dakota initially prompted my studies. My objective became the filling-in of some of the missing pieces in South Dakota's bumblebee puzzle. My study …

Some Factors Influencing Rates Of Parasitism Of The Wheat Stem Maggot In South Dakota, Wendell Lee Morrill Jan 1968

Some Factors Influencing Rates Of Parasitism Of The Wheat Stem Maggot In South Dakota, Wendell Lee Morrill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The wheat stem maggot, Meromyza americana Fitch, is distributed throughout most of the wheat growing areas of North America. Significant crop losses from this insect have been reported in wheat, rye, barley, and other grasses. Several investigators have studied the wheat stem maggot's life history and listed its parasites, but no attempts have been made to evaluate the importance of the various parasites. The objective of this study was to investigate some of the factors that might influence the rate of parasitism and to learn the importance of individual parasite species. Most of the work was done during the growing …

The Systematics And Ecology Of The Characeae (Nitella And Chara) Of Southwestern United States And Northern Mexico., Donald R. Tindall May 1966

The Systematics And Ecology Of The Characeae (Nitella And Chara) Of Southwestern United States And Northern Mexico., Donald R. Tindall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

General. – The Characaeae is the only extant family of an ancient and unique group of nonvascular aquatic plants which are classified as a separate division, the Charophyta (Groves and Bullock-Webster, 1920; Zaneveld, 1940; Imahori, 1954; Bold, 1957; and others) or as a separate class in the Chlorophyta (Fritsch, 1944; Smith, 1950; Wood and Imahori 1965; and others). Charophytes, like many green algae, are relatively simple haplobiontic plants with zygotic meiosis. However, their complex sexual apparatus, characterized by gametangia enclosed within several sterile cells, distinguishes them from all green algae. The basic morphological features of the genera Nitella and Chara …

An Analysis Of Biology Workbooks To Determine The Completeness Of Their Content As Measured By A Previous Comprehensive Study, Donald A. Henrickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The desire for a universally acceptable and adaptable workbook for use in high school classes in biology has often been expressed by teachers in the field. It must be acknowledged that to be adaptable in all situations the workbook must be designed with many factors in mind. The following questions seem of paramount importance in the design of an applicable workbook. (1) What phases of a biology course require supplementary work by the student in order to insure more fully the comprehension of the material? (2) How can material of little consequence or importance in the total teaching situation be …
