Presence And Voice: Understanding The Tensions Over The American Church's Relationship To Its Culture Through The Writings Of Origen, Chrysostom And Augustine, Henry Curtis Mcdaniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In light of the perceived and demonstrable decline of the church's presence and voice in American culture, this dissertation proposes to examine and to discuss the dynamic viewpoints and tensions within the church over her presence and voice in the American culture by examining the various interpretations over the rhetoric of Christianization in the Roman Empire and how those viewpoints surface in the positions of Origen, Chrysostom and Augustine. The objective of this approach is to continue the discussion first articulated by H. Richard Niebuhr's 1951 work, Christ and Culture, by showing that the way one understands the rhetoric of …

Justification And Good Works: A Study Of The Joint Declaration On The Doctrine Of Justification, Justin Chay Jan 2009

Justification And Good Works: A Study Of The Joint Declaration On The Doctrine Of Justification, Justin Chay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The doctrine of justification tells how the saving grace of God in Christ can be actualized in the believers. Because of the very importance of this doctrine, disputes broke out between Augustine and Pelagius, later in the medieval period, and most importantly during the Reformation period - which led to mutual condemnations and the division of the Western church. The church still does not have a unified voice in interpreting the doctrine despite recent ecumenical dialogues, which culminated in the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification in 1999.

A Contemporary Consideration Of The Role Of Metaphysics In Systematic Theology: The Contributions Of Pope John Paul Ii And Claude Tresmontant, Daniel M. Strudwick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been traditionally held that Catholic theology has notable metaphysical threads deeply connected with the fabric of its faith and its systematic presentation. This dissertation focuses upon those "metaphysical threads" in order to explore their past, present and possible future status within theology. In each section the goal is to investigate the contributions of John Paul II and Claude Tresmontant and the role they believe metaphysics has within Catholic Systematic theology. This work attempts to present and assess whether, which, and why components of metaphysics, according to John Paul II and Tresmontant, should be retained even in light of …

Sacrament Of Deification: The Eucharistic Vision Of Alexander Schmemann In Light Of The Doctrine Of Theosis, Janet Puppo Jan 2007

Sacrament Of Deification: The Eucharistic Vision Of Alexander Schmemann In Light Of The Doctrine Of Theosis, Janet Puppo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study posits that the Eastern Christian doctrine of theosis, or deification, informs, enhances and illuminates Eucharistic understanding. It argues that the Eucharistic vision of Orthodox priest and theologian, Father Alexander Schmemann, offers the most cogent evidence in support of the intrinsic link between the Eucharist and the doctrine of theosis. Based on Schmemann's observations that a Eucharistic crisis exists in the Church as a result of liturgical indifference and secularism, this study seeks to retrieve the patristic vision of the Eucharist that synthesized the world, the Church and the Kingdom of God in an interdependent and harmonic balance. The …

The Character Of God In The Speeches Of Yahweh In The Book Of Job, John David Telgren Jun 2006

The Character Of God In The Speeches Of Yahweh In The Book Of Job, John David Telgren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Considering Job in its canonical form with special attention to the lawsuit and the mythopoeic features, this thesis investigates the portrayal of God in his speeches as a corrective to Job and his friends' erroneous view of God. Their erroneous view is based on the concept of violent and militant divine power that defeated a rival chaos deity before the foundation of the world and established order, justice, and community. Job and his friends believed that just rule, which is to preserve community order, is naturally based on the same violent power with which the world was created. Therefore, any …

Between Humanity And Divinity: Christ Consciousness In Jacques Maritain's On The Grace And Humanity Of Jesus And The Epistemology Of Michael Polanyi, Stephen Doering Jan 2006

Between Humanity And Divinity: Christ Consciousness In Jacques Maritain's On The Grace And Humanity Of Jesus And The Epistemology Of Michael Polanyi, Stephen Doering

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates the consciousness of Christ in Maritain's On the Grace and Humanity of Jesus in light of his theory of consciousness in Poetic Intuition in Art and Poetry. At issue is the epistemological question of non-thematic, non-explicit knowledge bearing upon the conscious awareness of Jesus. Michael Polanyi's contribution is his theory of tacit knowledge. In utilizing Polanyi we are able to substantiate Maritain's belief that non-thematic knowledge does, nonetheless, bear upon our explicit conscious awareness. The final chapter brings these points together by investigating Jesus' knowledge and consciousness of himself and his divine status.

Reimagining Evangelism At East County Church Of Christ: Nurturing Individuals In The Art Of Narrative Evangelism, Mark Love May 1997

Reimagining Evangelism At East County Church Of Christ: Nurturing Individuals In The Art Of Narrative Evangelism, Mark Love

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This doctor of ministry project addresses issues related to evangelism at the East County Church of Christ in Gresham, Oregon. At the inception of this project, East County possessed conflicting notions with regard to evangelism. Early congregational understandings reflected a non-sectarian, innovative spirit, supportive of a lean, missional ecclesiology. Recent years, however, brought difficult experiences directly related to notions of evangelism. The recent firing of a minister called into question the congregation's commitment to evangelism. This chapter in the congregation's life left two lingering effects. First, it forever sealed the fate for doing evangelism in any manner reminiscent of traditional …

A Theologically-Rooted Order Of Worship For The Pipeline Road Church Of Christ, Jim Mcdoniel May 1993

A Theologically-Rooted Order Of Worship For The Pipeline Road Church Of Christ, Jim Mcdoniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When a church does not plan its worship, that worship will typically demonstrate a lack of progression, theme, and appropriate movement. As a result, the assembly will neither adequately edify the saints nor praise God. Yet, many churches do little planning for worship. The Pipeline Road Church of Christ in Hurst, Texas, was one of those churches. Little was done to coordinate the activities of the assemblies before this study.

Developing A Theology Of The Lord's Supper, Bill Allen May 1992

Developing A Theology Of The Lord's Supper, Bill Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many people today, the Lord's Supper is the most important and significant act of the Sunday assembly when the church gathers to worship. Many of those who consider it significant, however, have little or no knowledge of its rich biblical and historical background, while even fewer have given thought to its theological foundation. There is a great need today for renewal in the area of corporate Christian worship and particularly in the church's participation in the Lord's Supper.
