Analysis Of The Water Insoluble Proteins Of Beef, Pork And Mutton By The Van Slyke Method., Edward H. Cox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

So far as the author has been able to find, there are no published analyses showing the relative composition of the most important used meat proteins, beef, pork and mutton, the Osborne and co-workers have published analyses of the water insoluble proteins of the muscle substance of ox, chicken, fish, and scallop. This paper gives the results of analyses, by the Van Slyke method, of the water insoluble fat-free proteins of beef, pork, and mutton.

The Attitude Of The Romantic Poets Towards Nature., Margaret Jane Wanless Jun 1916

The Attitude Of The Romantic Poets Towards Nature., Margaret Jane Wanless

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

By nature I mean the wide world of eye and ear that surrounds man, the kinship of which to man, it has been the poet's privilege to interpret. Each poet interprets differently because each sees through different glasses. "We receive but what we give, And in our life alone does nature live." (Coleridge – Dejec. 4 – 1)

Analysis Of A Chylous Fluid., Elizabeth C. Franke May 1916

Analysis Of A Chylous Fluid., Elizabeth C. Franke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Not many analyses of chylous fluids have been published. The analyses reported here were accordingly undertaken when a somewhat unusual opportunity for obtaining chylous fluid presented itself, with the object of adding to the data already published, confirmation or correction of the usually accepted ideas regarding the composition of chyle. The samples of the fluid analysed were drawn from the thorax of a woman fifty-eight years old and were collected over a period of about three months. From the second of November until the eight of April (date of patient's death) fifteen extractions, with a total volume of forty-eight and …

Some Phases Of The Rural Sociological Situation., Jonas William Boyer 1890-1947 May 1915

Some Phases Of The Rural Sociological Situation., Jonas William Boyer 1890-1947

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This treatise is not intended to cover the whole field of Rural Sociology. It deals briefly with the more important phases of the subject. Perchance many important problems have been omitted which the reader will call to mind. This will go to show that the reader is thinking about the subject, and will be led to consider further the welfare of the rural population. The Science of Rural Sociology is rather new in consideration, but the oldest of all sciences in practice. The original inhabitants of this world were ruralists, and necessarily social conditions sprang up with them which needed …

The Chemical Distribution Of Phosphorus In Potato., Hattie L. Heft May 1913

The Chemical Distribution Of Phosphorus In Potato., Hattie L. Heft

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first effective impulse to a systematic investigation of the chemistry of food was given by Liebig some fifty years ago. The earliest quantitative analyses of food materials which we have found are those of potatoes reported by George Pearson in England, 1795. In 1805, Einhoff made similar analyses of potatoes. He also determined several of the constituents of the ash. Liebig and his associates Playfair, Boeckman and others, in the latter half of the last century, made analyses of foods using methods similar to those now in use. It is interesting to observe how accurate many of their results …

Le Misanthrope., Henry William Lenz May 1912

Le Misanthrope., Henry William Lenz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to show that there is found in this "noblest of comic masterpieces" an absorbing study of mankind and a profound knowledge of the human heart. It is In his work that man gives himself to the world; in his literary efforts he gives a vivid portrayal of himself, his real and inner self is splendidly revealed, though the merely material man is kept in the background. Bearing this in mind the writer has endeavored not so much to depict the character of Moliere, but, rather by an analytical process, to designate the elements which …

Atmospheric Nitrous And Nitric Acids And Their Absorption By Rain And Surface Water., Alexander Y. Lee May 1912

Atmospheric Nitrous And Nitric Acids And Their Absorption By Rain And Surface Water., Alexander Y. Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Having been born and brought up in China, an empire, where the people are utterly ignorant of the vital importance of a good system of public water supply, and having decided to take chemistry as my profession, I feel intensely interested in the examination of water for the purpose of convincing our people in the far east to pay proper attention to sanitation on a chemical basis. The average life period there has been roughly estimated to be thirty years, and we have now in the Middle Kingdom a population of 450,000,000. It means in each century we have approximately …

The School Garden From An Educational View Point., Emilie Yunker May 1911

The School Garden From An Educational View Point., Emilie Yunker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"School gardens are not intended to create gardeners or farmers but to afford the growing boy or girl an opportunity for many aided developments." In the school garden the children are taught by one who can inspire them with a love not only for plants, but for everything else that has life and grows to take care of trees, lawns, flowers, vegetables and such things planted with their own hands. It is a place where the plants together with their friends and enemies have an intimate relation to the child personally; where the lessons are far more vital than anything …

Bacteria In Relation To Every Day Life., Inga Werness May 1909

Bacteria In Relation To Every Day Life., Inga Werness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is to be noticed that if there be any marshy places, certain animals breed there, which are invisible to the eye and yet getting into the system through the mouth and nostrils cause serious disorders." This quaint observation is taken from a manuscript written over two thousand years ago, showing that bacteria even if not seen, were living and active. Latin writers of about the same time recorded a relation between insects and malaria which has but lately been proved and explained. The infectious character of leprosy has long been recognized, since the ancient Hebrews caused the isolation of …

A Comparative Study Of Degenerative Tissue, Homer Davis Jan 1897

A Comparative Study Of Degenerative Tissue, Homer Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nutrition is the earliest and most constant of vital operations. So prominent is the nutritive apparatus of an animal that the animal has been likened to a moving sac, organized to convert foreign matter into its own likeness, to which the complex organs of animal life are but auxiliaries. In growth more material is used by the body-protoplasm that is expelled. Nutrition includes excretion i.e. the removal of spent material which is usually poisonous and which if allowed to remain in the body organism would impair nutrition in its fullest sense. The objects of nutrition are growth, repair, and propogation. …

The Trend Towards Socialism In Recent Law-Making, James Arthur Brown Jan 1896

The Trend Towards Socialism In Recent Law-Making, James Arthur Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: It is an undeniable fact that civilized nations are drifting towards socialism. Whether we reach the goal of ideal and theoretic socialists at last, or stop short of socialism in its modern accepted meaning it is not the purpose of this work to investigate. Socialism is of recent origin. It was started less than seventy years ago in France. The progress that it has made is worthy of some attention. It has spread to all civilized nations and has won many earnest supporters in England, France Germany and the United States. A great deal of confusion results from the …
