Effectiveness Of An Aspergillus Oryzae Culture On The Preservation Efficiency And Feeding Value Of Alfalfa-Brome Haylage Stored In Gas-Tight And Concrete Stave Silos, Samuel C. Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High-quality forage is essential in feeding dairy cattle if dairymen intend to increase milk production or to maintain a high level of production. Problems of preserving high-quality forage for the winter feeding of livestock occur each year. The preservation of legumes and grasses as hay is governed by a number of factors: (1) curing weather, (2) state of maturity of the crops, and (3) other factors such as equipment available and methods of handling the crop. The inability of dairymen to control these factors results in heavy nutrient loses in the hays during the curing process due primarily to leaching …
Beef Cattle Selection Indices And Phenotypic Correlations Among Certain Characteristics, Lowell L. Wilson
Beef Cattle Selection Indices And Phenotypic Correlations Among Certain Characteristics, Lowell L. Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An improvement in the quality of beef and in production methods will raise the living standards of both the rancher and consumer. Raising quality can be best accomplished by selecting breeding stock which foster desirable qualities in their offspring in proportion to the economic value of that particular characteristic. The objective of this study was to evaluate various selection device sin relation to the improvement which can be realized through their application. This dissertation examines the effects of such variables as color, condition, and weight on conformation scores and to determine whether or not individual judges differ significantly in these …
Protein Requirements Of Fattening Cattle And The Effects Of Various Feed Additives, Richard Douglas Goodrich
Protein Requirements Of Fattening Cattle And The Effects Of Various Feed Additives, Richard Douglas Goodrich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A large number of experiments have been conducted during the past several years to study the response of beef cattle to different amounts of protein in the ration. The recent interest in high-concentrate rations and the common usage of a number of feed additives warrants a re-evaluation of the nutrient requirements of fattening cattle, especially protein, for these systems of feeding. The feeding and digestion trails reported in this thesis, therefore, were conducted to determine the protein requirements of fattening cattle fed high-concentrate rations using four different levels of protein. Each level of protein was fed with diethylstilbestrol, diallyldiethylstilbestrol, dynafac, …
Bulk Milk Hauling Costs In The Sioux Valley Milkshed, Edward R. Foss
Bulk Milk Hauling Costs In The Sioux Valley Milkshed, Edward R. Foss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bulk handling of milk is a recent development in milk transportation. It is important to know the current cost data of transporting bulk milk. Cost structure is the important supply factor in determining hauling rates. Distance and volume are two important factors, but more detailed data are required to better determine the actual costs. The objective of this study was to determine the cost per hundredweight for transporting bulk milk from farm to plant within the Sioux Valley Milk Producers Association milk shed. The attainment of this objective involved the collection, classification, and analysis of several categories of data. Thus, …
A Histological Study Of The Effects Of Relaxin On The Bovine Cervix, Carroll J. Eggee
A Histological Study Of The Effects Of Relaxin On The Bovine Cervix, Carroll J. Eggee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The cervix is a thick walled tube between the vagina and the uterus which serves as a passageway for sperm to enter and for the products of birth to be expelled. Several investigators have reported that realxin causes an observable and measureable cervical dilation. Whether this hormone, which has been assayed only in the pregnant female of both humans and animals, is the one which initiates and facilitates the birth process has yet to be determined. The purpose of this study was to make histological and histochemical comparisons of the effects of relaxin alone and in combination with the sensitizing …
A Comparison Of The Success Of Teaching Machines And The Programed Text To That Of The Traditional Teaching Based On A Survey Of Literature And Research Reports, Robert E. Christianson
A Comparison Of The Success Of Teaching Machines And The Programed Text To That Of The Traditional Teaching Based On A Survey Of Literature And Research Reports, Robert E. Christianson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Programmed learning, still in the embryonic stage, has brought with it new hope for some of the answers to our mass educational problems of a rapidly expanding curriculum, broadened individual differences, and an increasing pupil teacher ratio. Teaching efficiency may be brought to an optimum level by constructing teaching machines and programmed texts as developed by S. L. Pressey. This study attempted to compare the effectiveness of traditional educational practices with those using the programed text and the teaching machine. The survey of literature and the use of research findings were used as a basis for the comparison. The investigator …
Influence Of Nitrate, Vitamin A And Protein Level On Feedlot Performance And Vitamin A Status Of Fattening Cattle, Burton Arthur Weichenthal
Influence Of Nitrate, Vitamin A And Protein Level On Feedlot Performance And Vitamin A Status Of Fattening Cattle, Burton Arthur Weichenthal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research project was conducted to study the effects of nitrate, added to the rations as sodium nitrate, on feedlot performance and vitamin A status of fattening cattle. Two levels of protein were used to determine if protein level influenced the effects of nitrate or the need for supplemental vitamin A. In addition, the experiment was designed to determine the value of vitamin A and protein supplement when fed with a high concentrate ration consisting of ground shelled corn and alfalfa hay. Yearling steers were fed a high grain ration composed of 80% ground shelled corn and 20% alfalfa hay …
