The Role Of Nematodes In A South Dakota Grassland Ecosystem, James D. Smolik
The Role Of Nematodes In A South Dakota Grassland Ecosystem, James D. Smolik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In an attempt to elucidate the role of nematodes in a grassland ecosystem nematode taxa, number and biomass data was gathered over a three year period at the Cottonwood International Biological Program Grassland Biome site in western South Dakota. The effects of grazing intensity, sampling date and sampling depth were studied. Nematicide treatment of range grasses in field and greenhouse studies was also used to evaluate the role of nematodes. Biomass data was used to estimate the intake of plant feeding nematodes. Results obtained demonstrate that soil inhabiting nematodes constitute a significant proportion of the consumer biomass at the Cotton[1]wood …

Application Of 125i To The Detection And Assay Of Viruses And Viral Antibody Adsorbed To Latex Particles, Charles Steven Duvall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study, then, was undertaken to develop a universal, in vitro, extracellular method utilizing fluorescence and radioactive 125I to rapidly detect, identify, and quantitate pathogenic viruses and viral antibodies. Focus of the study is the CLAM model, which consists of inert latex particles, plus four radioactively labeled components: antibody, virus, enzyme (RNase) and fluorochrome (FITC).
Instrumentation For The Study Of Animal Responses To Ultrasonic Sound, Philip Y. L. Kwan
Instrumentation For The Study Of Animal Responses To Ultrasonic Sound, Philip Y. L. Kwan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, the Electrical Engineering Department at South Dakota State University is testing the effects of ultrasound on coyotes. It is known that coyotes can hear high pitched tones of higher frequency than that of the human ear. The overall goal of this research is to investigate the feasibility of using ultrasound to repel predators, mainly the coyote, from livestock. It has also been found from preliminary experiments that there is a significant increase in the heart rate of the coyote during exposure to noise levels of 100 to 110 …

An Implantable Transmitter And A Complete Telemetry System For Body Temperature Measurement, Delbert D. Dais
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This manuscript includes the specification, design, operation and results of an implantable temperature sensing transmitter and a pulse frequency to voltage converter with a digital temperature readout. The research project also includes Frequency Modulated (FM) receiver to complete the temperature measuring telemetry system. What are telemetry and biotelemetry? According to the Modern Dictionary of Electronics, telemetry is "the science of sensing and monitoring of information at some remote location and transmitting the data to a convenient location to be read or recorded". Biotelemetry is "the technique of measuring or monitoring vital processes and transmitting data without wire to a point …
A New Method For The Rapid Isolation Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Jeffry F. Kohlhoff
A New Method For The Rapid Isolation Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Jeffry F. Kohlhoff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The importance of the fecal streptococci as indicators of water pollution has come under increasing scrutiny. in the past decade. This has been due in part to improved methods of detection of fecal streptococci. Also, the fecal coliform and total coliform tests and· their significance have been questioned. The fecal streptococci may furnish a more reliable means of identifying sources of pollution. The fecal streptococci are those gram-positive cocci which occur in the intestinal tract of man and animals. The Sherman criteria for identification of the fecal streptococci are used in Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology to differentiate the viridans …
Comparison Of Six Methods For The Quantitation Of Salmonella Species From Surface Water, James George Nothnagel
Comparison Of Six Methods For The Quantitation Of Salmonella Species From Surface Water, James George Nothnagel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Water Quality Act of 1965 sets forth the national policies for water pollution prevention, control, and abatement for interstate waters. This act requires all states to prepare water quality standards for the interstate waters within their boundaries. In compliance with this requirement, the "Water Quality Standards for the Surface Waters of South Dakota" was adopted in 1967, thus establishing official parameters of water quality for all surface waters in the state. These standards take into account the three principal sources of pollution in the state which are municipal, industrial, and agricultural. Of particular interest is the contamination of these …

Biology And Ecology Of False Wireworms In South Dakota (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Carrol Otto Calkins
Biology And Ecology Of False Wireworms In South Dakota (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Carrol Otto Calkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
False wireworms were important pests of wheat on the Great Plains during the early 20th century. Until recently, they were of little importance; however, they are now occasionally appearing in damaging proportions. The purpose of studying the biological and ecological aspects of these insects in South Dakota was to understand the factors responsible for their demise and the circumstances that could affect the recurrence of damaging populations. The more common species of false wireworms found in South Dakota during this study were Eleodes suturalis (Say), E. opaca (Say), E. hispilabris (Say), E. tricostata (Say), E. extricata (Say), E. obsoleta (Say), …
Quantification Of Pollutants In Surface Runoff From Agricultural Lands In Brookings County, South Dakota, Leland Lester Harms
Quantification Of Pollutants In Surface Runoff From Agricultural Lands In Brookings County, South Dakota, Leland Lester Harms
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Surface runoff from snowmelt and rainfall was measured 1n eastern South Dakota from seven sites (7.18 to 18.69 acres) during 1971 and 1972. All sites had single crops which included corn, oats, pasture and hayland. All land was farmed under normal farming conditions. Samples were taken periodically throughout each runoff event, and a single composite sample was made from the individual samples for a particular site. The composite sample represented the entire runoff event. The amount of rainfall and the runoff flow were measured. Determinations on the composite sample included total coliform, fecal coliform, fecal streptococcus, soluble pesticides, specific conductance, …
