Movements And Habitats Of Brood-Rearing Wood Ducks On A Prairie River, Randy L. Smith
Movements And Habitats Of Brood-Rearing Wood Ducks On A Prairie River, Randy L. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Radio telemetry and brood surveys were used to evaluate wood duck (Aix sponsa) brood habitat and movements along 40 km of the Big Sioux River in eastern South Dakota during 1979-81. Most of the oxbows and nearby wetlands in the study area contained water in 1979-80, but drought dried all but 2 of the 33 oxbows in 1981. Fourteen brood hens were radio monitored. In 1980, 4 hens utilized oxbows, 1 hen utilized the river, and 2 hens used other habitats for brood rearing. In 1981, 4 hens utilized oxbows, 2 hens utilized the river, and 1 hen utilized the …
Assessment Of The Impact Of The European Corn Borer At Three Locations In South Dakota, David R. Raemisch
Assessment Of The Impact Of The European Corn Borer At Three Locations In South Dakota, David R. Raemisch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The European corn borer (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) varies as an
economically significant pest in South Dakota from south to north. In
the northern part of the state the European corn borer (ECB) is limited
to one generation per year. In contrast, there are localized sites
along the Missouri River in southern South Dakota which usually
experience a substantial second brood population. Infestation by
either first or second brood ECB occurs at different stages in the
developmental sequence of the corn plant. As such, each brood must be
considered separately when assessing relationships between yield loss
and ECB larval cavities within the …
Blood Ethoprop Retention And Interaction, Ebenezer Bonsu Asafu-Adjaye
Blood Ethoprop Retention And Interaction, Ebenezer Bonsu Asafu-Adjaye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
0-ethyl-S, S-dipropyl phosphorodithioate, technically known as Ethoprop, is a newly introduced insecticide-nematicide manufactured by Mobil Corporation. It is applied directly to the soil where it is believed to exercise a broad spectrum, non-fumigant effect. It has good soil movement and residual properties, and has been used to control rootworms, cutworms, ·nematodes, wireworms, flea beetles and symphylans in corn, tobacco, potatoes, peanuts, bananas, and other crops. The uses of ethoprop are primarily agricultural, thus most of the work done on it to elucidate its properties has been in that area. The little research that has been performed on the biological properties …

Growth Hormone Variability And Its Predictive Value In Beef Females, Thomas W. Lingscheit
Growth Hormone Variability And Its Predictive Value In Beef Females, Thomas W. Lingscheit
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Endocrine influence on metabolism determines the rate and extent of growth of an animal. A thorough understanding of hormones and their influence is necessary to the meat animal industry for advancement of efficient production to supply a growing world demand for food. Many hormones affect metabolism, but growth hormone (GH) appears to have one of the smallest fluctuations in circulating levels. Previous research indicates nonsignificant changes in plasma growth hormone (GH) due to season, circadian rhythm or level of nutrient intake. Factors that have been identified a s influencing GH level are sex, age, roughage content of the diet, breed, …
The Response Of The Face Fly (Musca Automnalis) To Seasonal Changes In Manure Quality, Timothy James Lysyk
The Response Of The Face Fly (Musca Automnalis) To Seasonal Changes In Manure Quality, Timothy James Lysyk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The face fly is a major pest of cattle in East Central South Dakota. The female fly feeds on the faces of cattle and lays eggs in freshly deposited manure. Preference is shown for the manure of animals fed grass. The egg and larval stages are spent in the manure, and the mature larvae migrate to the surrounding substrate to pupate. While in the pats, the face fly stages present have been shown to be sensitive to a number of physical, chemical and biotic factors. The manure pat acts as both a source of food and as a habitat for …
A Short-Run Economic Analysis Of Some Factors Influencing The Supply Of Beef-Cattle At Auctions In South-Eastern Botswana, 1976-1980, Kene Patrick Cyril Sinombe
A Short-Run Economic Analysis Of Some Factors Influencing The Supply Of Beef-Cattle At Auctions In South-Eastern Botswana, 1976-1980, Kene Patrick Cyril Sinombe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Auction sales provide a major cattle marketing outlet for farmers in Botswana. There were 5,740 cattle auctioned in the South-eastern part of Botswana in 1976. This number represented 16% of the total export off-take from the area. The main market outlet for slaughter beef is through direct marketing of cattle to the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) abattoir. The BMC, an export monopoly beef marketing board, sets prices and cattle buyers country-wide adjust them to derive producer prices, because they finally sell cattle to the BMC. The BMC price plays a major role in deriving producer prices at auction sales yards. …
Genetic Correlations Among Sex-Limited Traits, Michael D. Macneil
Genetic Correlations Among Sex-Limited Traits, Michael D. Macneil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Monte Carlo simulation techniques were used to assess the merits of three methods for calculation of the genetic correlation when traits have been measured on half-sibs of each sex. The restricted maximum likelihood, path coefficient and covariance component estimators did not differ significantly in their accuracy. Path coefficient and covariance component methodologies gave nearly unbiased estimators for traits of high heritability. Across both levels of heritability, the restricted maximum likelihood methodology resulted in genetic correlations being estimated with significantly smaller sampling variance than the other methods. Genetic correlations were estimated for age of puberty, weight at puberty, conceptions per service, …

Composition, Biomass, And Protein Content Of A Lemna Trisulca L., Invertebrate Community In A Prairie Wetland, Linda J. Meyers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Samples of star duckweed (Lemna trisulca L.) were collected from a South Dakota prairie wetland during the summer 1981. Amphipods and gastropods were the dominant macroinvertebrates found within samples of duckweed in terms of biomass and density. Cladocera were the dominant microinvertebrates found in association with star duckweed. Significant variability was found in the biomass and densities of specific invertebrates with respect to sampling dates. Crude protein values of star duckweed-invertebrate community samples ranged from 7.6 to 18.5% and were found to correlate significantly with protein levels of the duckweed. Crude protein values for star duckweed ranged from 7.1 to …
Uses Of Figures Of Speech In Selected Speeches Of Jerry Falwell, Mary M. Gill
Uses Of Figures Of Speech In Selected Speeches Of Jerry Falwell, Mary M. Gill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As early as 350 B.C. Aristotle was cultivating concepts of language usage. It addition to the principles of clarity, accuracy, appropriateness and vividness, he developed concepts on the uses of the metaphor as a stylistic tool. The study of style and its adaptation continued to the Roman Age and the early study of rhetoric in England. During the eighteenth-century various rhetoricians began analyzing style more closely. Francis Bacon noted "the ill and unfit choice of words wonderfully obstructs the understanding. "He analyzed words and word combinations and their effect on interpretation. Adam Smith instructed that style was the common element …
Trace Determination Of Tellurium In Biological Samples By Flameless Atomic Absorption Following Extraction Of The Sym-Diphenylthiourea-Tellurium Complex, Deborah A. Pravecek
Trace Determination Of Tellurium In Biological Samples By Flameless Atomic Absorption Following Extraction Of The Sym-Diphenylthiourea-Tellurium Complex, Deborah A. Pravecek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A flameless atomic absorption method of determining trace amounts of tellurium in acidic -media with sym-diphenylthiourea has been studied. Tellurium is extracted almost quantitatively from 4-8 M hydrochloric acid with a chloroform solution of sym-diphenylthiourea. The effects of interfering ions on the extraction efficiency have been studied. Conditions for the maximum extraction have been described. Optimal instrument parameters for the analysis of extracts have been determined. In most biological samples tellurium is found only in trace quantities. The necessity to determine traces of tellurium has raised difficult problems for analysts. The purpose of this investigation was to develop a technique …
Theories Of Image-Making In Hogarth, Reynolds And Blake, Anne C. Johnson
Theories Of Image-Making In Hogarth, Reynolds And Blake, Anne C. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is a study of artistic imagination--literally, the process of image-making--the act of translating sensory information into visible symbols. Specifically, it is a study of three eighteenth century artists' detailed theories of imagination, and a comparison of the visual effects described by these theories. William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and William Blake ar~ three roughly contemporary artists who each describe a means of approaching nature, recording sensory facts and translating them into the images of art. I intend to pose three related questions to these artists and to seek answers in their respective treatises on aesthetic composition. Two of these …

Dye Marking Of Antibiotics Used In Treatment Of Mastitis In Dry And Lactating Cows, Richard A. Ellefson
Dye Marking Of Antibiotics Used In Treatment Of Mastitis In Dry And Lactating Cows, Richard A. Ellefson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mastitis is the one major disease affecting dairy cows; considerable direct and indirect economic losses can be attributed to mastitis (6). Treatment of mastitis with antibiotic preparations will alleviate most disease symptoms. Problems may arise when cows treated with antibiotics have their milk used for commercial milk processes before antibiotics are clear. They are: 1) some people are allergic to penicillin, and 2) cultured dairy products may not grow because of inhibition. The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act established that milk and milk products containing antibiotics are considered adulterated. Due to recent innovations in antibiotics testing The National Conference on …

Use Of Dry Whey And Lactose Hydrolysis In Yogurt Bases, Nagendra P. Shah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Yogurt is one of the oldest and most traditional fermented dairy products. Since early times it has been an important food item of the people in the Middle East. Except for its refreshing taste and wholesomeness as a food, no special virtues were claimed for it until early in the 20th century when the bacteriologist, Elie Metchnikoff, who shared a Nobel Prize in 1908, concluded from his studies on the effect of lactic acid bacteria of the digestive tract, that yogurt arrests putrefaction in the intestinal tract and thus might be beneficial to health (55). Attempts to popularize yogurt in …
