Food Selectivity Of Bluegill And Green Sunfish Fry, Aaron Barkoh
Food Selectivity Of Bluegill And Green Sunfish Fry, Aaron Barkoh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Four genera of zooplankton and cladoceran egg cases, collected from a municipal sewage lagoon, were made available as food to green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) and bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) fry, to examine their food selectivity. Green sunfish and bluegill fry ranged in size from 8.5-11.0 mm and 8.0-10.5 mm at stocking and were reared for 31 and 30 days, respectively. The gut contents of 1488 green sunfish and 1440 bluegill fry, representing day and night samples were examined. Diet composition was evaluated using the linear food selection index. Both green sunfish and bluegill fry selected for Cvclops vernalis and consistently selected …
The Economic Feasibility Of Small Scale Cooperatively Organized Fuel Alcohol Production In Eastern South Dakota, Daryl Arthur Brehm
The Economic Feasibility Of Small Scale Cooperatively Organized Fuel Alcohol Production In Eastern South Dakota, Daryl Arthur Brehm
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research on the economic feasibility of a cooperatively organized small-scale fuel alcohol plant is justified for several reasons. Policy makers could consult the results of this study as an aid in making decisions about public subsidies for fuel alcohol production. Investors concerned about the wisdom of allocating capital to this type of fuel alcohol production facility are also potential beneficiaries of this research. Perhaps most importantly, this information would be valuable to farmers in eastern South Dakota. Alcohol plants organized on a cooperative basis could reduce the individual financial risk of farmers involved--by spreading commitments among all the cooperative's members. …
Effects Of Anabolic Implants And Breed Group On Carcass Traits And Palatability Characteristics Of Bullock Beef, Roger C. Johnson
Effects Of Anabolic Implants And Breed Group On Carcass Traits And Palatability Characteristics Of Bullock Beef, Roger C. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ultimate goal of the beef industry is efficient production of beef that satisfies the consumer and increases demand. In the past, American producers have been primarily interested in the production of high quality beef because consumers were concerned with meat palatability, particularly tenderness. However, due to current diet-health issues and economic conditions, American consumers have come to expect acceptable palatability and are now more concerned with the nutrient density and cost of their meat purchases. Maximum production efficiency must be realized to keep beef competitive with other protein sources for consumer dollars. Production systems must be used that are …
Polyperiod Linear Programming Analysis Of A Brookings County Irrigated Farm, Paul Kiendl
Polyperiod Linear Programming Analysis Of A Brookings County Irrigated Farm, Paul Kiendl
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the U.S., agriculture is a major industry which produced approximately $529 billion worth of goods in 1982. Agriculture directly employs 3 percent of the U.S. work force, while another 19 percent is employed in manufacturing, processing, transporting, and retailing agriculturally related products. In the past few years, this major industry has experienced a turbulent economic period. The general economic recession in the world coupled with the elevated interest rates have depressed the financial position of the agricultural sector. In 1981, both short-and long-term interest rates reached post World War II record highs. More significantly, the real interest rate rose …
The Effect Of Simulated Natural Toxaphene Exposure On The Immune Respone Of Mice, Linda Reilly-Gergen
The Effect Of Simulated Natural Toxaphene Exposure On The Immune Respone Of Mice, Linda Reilly-Gergen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this investigation were to determine the immunotoxic effects of toxaphene exposure in mice after either ingestion or cutaneous absorption. Immunological competence was determined by studying various parameters of nonspecific, humoral, and cell-mediated immunity. These included 1) total and differential white blood cell counts, 2) organ to body weight ratios, 3) hemagglutination antibody titers, 4) the number of antigen-specific antibody-forming cells, and 5) both mitogen- and antigen-induced lymphocyte proliferation assays. The effect of toxaphene exposure on the overall immunoreactivity was determined by noting any alterations in resistance to infection and disease as measured by the LD 50 of …

Information Needs And Sources Of The South Dakota Horticulture Industry, Iris (Friedrichsen) Thoreson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Information is needed by horticulturists in areas such as chemical use and application, plant diseases and insects, cultural practices, and marketing techniques. Horticulturists can use a variety of sources to get the information they need. They can use printed material, radio or television, and personal sources. The individuals or groups wanting to communicate with horticulturists need to be aware of the kinds of information needed by the horticulturists and the sources used by them. A computer search of current literature disclosed limited findings on the information gathering processes used by commercial horticulturists. However, researchers have studied information gathering processes in …

Factors In Ultrafiltration And Thermal Concentration Of Whey Affecting Commercial Lactose Crystallization, Howard Henry Bonnemann
Factors In Ultrafiltration And Thermal Concentration Of Whey Affecting Commercial Lactose Crystallization, Howard Henry Bonnemann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The source for lactose production in the United States is almost exclusively sweet (low acid) whey which is the byproduct of cheese manufacture. Its extraction from the whey is motivated largely by pressures to utilize whey components to advantage. The ability to recover lactose efficiently is important to the manufacturers because they are in business ·to make a profit. At current market prices this profit margin will be difficult to realize unless an operation is fairly large a11d quite efficient. However, when considering the alternative of disposing of whey or its components, including lactose, as waste instead of attempting to …

Grazing Potential Of Major Soils Within The Black Hills Of South Dakota, Daryle L. Bennett
Grazing Potential Of Major Soils Within The Black Hills Of South Dakota, Daryle L. Bennett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Silvicultural management applied by the United States Forest Service (USFS) utilizes a system of intermediate thinning cuts rather than clearcutting. This practice results in a rich understory of vegetation supporting significant wildlife populations. In 1980, 62,000 deer were estimated to be present within the Black Hills. The understory, in conjunction with the adjacent open parks and stream meadows, also supports another valuable resource the livestock industry. Over 29,000 cattle grazed nearly 486,000 hectares of Black Hills National Forest grazing allotments in 1980, totaling approximately 128,000 AUMs (animal unit months) seasonally. However, only 194,000 hectares of forest are classified as suitable …
Pesticide-Pesticide Interaction In Organophosphorus Insecticide Degradation, Peter E. Cheng
Pesticide-Pesticide Interaction In Organophosphorus Insecticide Degradation, Peter E. Cheng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The widespread use of pesticides during the last two decades has played an important role in the development of today's agricultural system and is one of the major topics of modern science. It is also expected to assist in meeting the nutritional needs of the rapidly expanding populations in the world. The organophosphorus insecticides are among the most toxic pesticides employed for agricultural pest control. However, organophosphorus insecticides are usually rapidly degraded and eliminated. There has been a great amount of study on the chemical, microbial, and physical factors affecting degradation of organophosphorus insecticides, but degradation pathways and behavior have …

Small Mammals In Prairie Wetlands: Habitat Use And The Effects Of Wetland Modifications, Grey W. Pendleton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although well documented for other habitat types, small mammal habitat use patterns in prairie wetlands are poorly understood. The distribution of the mammal fauna of South Dakota is also not well known. Because of the lack of information in these areas, evaluation of the impacts of wetland modifications on the resident mammal community is not possible. The objectives of this study were (1) to document the species composition and abundance of small mammal communities inhabiting prairie wetland basins, (2) to determine the effects of small scale habitat modification on small mammals, (3) and to explain local species distribution patterns using …
John Donne's Use Of Numbers., Paula Yuhr Lincoln
John Donne's Use Of Numbers., Paula Yuhr Lincoln
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
John Donne wanted to live the leisurely life of a gentleman undisturbed by financial difficulties, devoting his life to entertaining his audience with his witty insights into life and, especially, love. However, his marriage, which was frowned upon by traditional society as a betrayal of his professional (tutorial) trust, and the subsequent arrival of his children on an annual basis, put him in the very modern dilemma of the man who does not have the money to support his preferred life-style. His family had been staunchly Roman Catholic and so, although he had been educated at Oxford, he left without …

Birds On Modified Wetlands In Eastern South Dakota, E. Nell Brady
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To examine the role of bird species (other than Anatidae) in the prairie wetlands ecosystem. Seven wetlands on Waterfowl Production Areas in eastern South Dakota were utilized to measure differences between bird communities in plots with dug brood complexes and non-modified plots. Thirty-eight species of wetland birds were recorded on wetlands during June 1981 and June 1982. The most abundant species included the red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), marsh wren (Cistothorus palustris), and song sparrow (Melospiza melodia). Analysis of variance was used to test between treatment (modified and natural plots on the wetlands) differences for the dependent variables: density, bird species …
