The De-Feminization Of Femininity : Exploratory Content Analysis Of Gay Male Fashion Magazines., Christopher J. Vincent
The De-Feminization Of Femininity : Exploratory Content Analysis Of Gay Male Fashion Magazines., Christopher J. Vincent
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis project is an exploratory content analysis that seeks to measure the ways in which gay male fashion magazine de-feminize their representations of feminine performing gay men. 125 images across five summer editions of Instinct Magazine, from 2010-2014, were randomly selected and were measured along the lines of race/ethnicity, fitness of clothing, build, touch, gaze, and body curvature. The research confirmed that gay male fashion magazines do in fact de-feminize their representations of femininity along these variables. The research also reflects pre-conceived ideas of representation along the boundaries of race. Using Michael Warners theory of Publics and Counterpublics as …
More Than "Moon Gold And Marbles" : Rationalization, Reform, And The Transformation Of The American Circus, 1900-1940., Matt Holdzkom 1981-
More Than "Moon Gold And Marbles" : Rationalization, Reform, And The Transformation Of The American Circus, 1900-1940., Matt Holdzkom 1981-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The circus, despite its prominence in the American imagination and popular culture, has yet to be given its due among the scholarly studies of cultural historians. This thesis is a historical contextualization of the circus in the United States. It contends that historical processes of rationalization and reform prevalent in the early twentieth century can be adequately interpreted through a study of the circus, and that these forces contributed significantly to the circus’ decline in size and cultural relevance in that period. Specifically, this thesis examines the amelioration of corruption and reform of labor relations as instrumental in the shrinkage …
Provisions Of Labor : Prehistoric Evidence For Economic Behavior At Ghost Ranch, New Mexico., David Alan Hoefer 1959-
Provisions Of Labor : Prehistoric Evidence For Economic Behavior At Ghost Ranch, New Mexico., David Alan Hoefer 1959-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Excavations at Ghost Ranch of two hunter-gatherer rock shelters, GR-2 and GR-145, offer new opportunities for assessing prehistoric land-use in the Piedra Lumbre Basin of northcentral New Mexico. Intersite analysis of these remains provides new data for understanding subsistence organization during the Southwestern Archaic and Formative periods. Faunal and floral assemblages from the two sites, located five km apart and overlapping chronologically, suggest divergent patterns of resource collection, processing, and use by groups taking up temporary residence in a seasonal round. I argue that economic agency provides the best explanation for the sites’ differentiated remains. Furthermore, I propose that, based …

Analysis Of Anacardic Acid On The Surface Of Pelargonium × Hortorum Using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorptoin Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging., Bryan Edward Wessel 1989-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The biosynthetic pathway leading to the production of anacardic acids (AnAcs) in glandular trichomes on the surface of geranium plants remains unclear. Anacardic acids are salicylic acid derivatives known to possess various medicinal benefits. Gene silencing techniques, such as RNA interference, could be useful in determining specific enzymes involved in the synthesis of AnAcs. However, it is first necessary to develop methodologies to image AnAcs. In this project, both fluorescence (FL) and mass spectral imaging (MSI) were tested. Our results indicate that cellular imaging of AnAcs, via FL, is not suitable because the spectral ranges of absorption and emission of …
Exploring The Roles Of Host And Tumor Cell Α4 And Α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Lung Cancer., John Caleb Greenwell
Exploring The Roles Of Host And Tumor Cell Α4 And Α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Lung Cancer., John Caleb Greenwell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and women worldwide. Tobacco exposure represents the major risk factor. Nicotine, an addictive plant alkaloid found in tobacco, has been demonstrated to stimulate lung carcinoma cells directly via nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) that trigger downstream signals capable of promoting lung cancer growth and progression. Attention has been given to α7 nAChRs, while less is known about α4 nAChRs. However, most studies evaluating these receptors relied on chemical inhibitors notorious for their off-target effects. Consequently, the true role of α4 and α7 nAChRs in lung cancer remains unclear. To address …
Do Hydrocarbon And Salinity Disturbance Affect Marine Meiofauna Diversity And Community Structure?, Kyle Edward Anderson
Do Hydrocarbon And Salinity Disturbance Affect Marine Meiofauna Diversity And Community Structure?, Kyle Edward Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Coastal areas around the world are subjected to numerous disturbances, both natural and anthropogenic. Coastal meiofauna are an ecologically important group of organisms that may be sensitive to disturbance and especially useful as indicators of habitat status following anthropogenic disturbances. In this research, I compared the effects of five different intensity levels of hydrocarbon contamination, salinity reduction, and random non-disturbance diversity manipulation on communities of marine meiofauna communities in a microcosm experiment. While I did find the expected negative relationship between intensity and morphogroup diversity in the random treatment, the hydrocarbon and salinity disturbance treatments had no effects on overall …

The purpose of this study was to examine the leaders within the U.S. food safety agencies and the top U.S. food producing companies, including meat, grain, and seed, and determine the presence of connectivity between the separate organizations. This involved looking at detailed biographical information on each leader, including previous and current employment, educational background and board memberships. Following identification of the agencies, companies, and their leaders, social network analysis was utilized to locate visual and quantitative links. Using the theories of C. Wright Mills and William Domhoff, the results showed a powerful argument that the power elite is still …
The Nazi Genocide: Eugenics, Ideology, And Implementation 1933-1945, Michael A. Letsinger
The Nazi Genocide: Eugenics, Ideology, And Implementation 1933-1945, Michael A. Letsinger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to seek knowledge of how eugenics justified extreme racial policy, territorial expansion, committing unprecedented crimes against humanity; and to understand why and how eighty million human beings yielded to totalitarianism and racial murder. Further, by examining Nazi science and policies, through the lens of concentration/extermination camps at Dachau and Auschwitz, we sought to understand the linkage between scientific racism, Nazi ideology and genocide. Critiquing Germany’s failure to exercise sound science and morality in its occupation, subjugation, and depopulation during WW II, this paper will argue Nazi Germany’s evolution to systematized, industrial mass murder of …
Role Of C-Kit In The Growth, Migration And Differentiation Of Human Cardiac Progenitor Cells., Bathri Narayan Vajravelu
Role Of C-Kit In The Growth, Migration And Differentiation Of Human Cardiac Progenitor Cells., Bathri Narayan Vajravelu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The belief that adult mammalian heart lacks regenerative potential was challenged by the identification of c-kit positive cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) in the heart. A recent phase I clinical trial (SCIPIO), has shown that autologous c-kit positive CPCs improve cardiac function and quality of life when transplanted into ischemic heart disease patients. c-Kit is a type III receptor tyrosine kinase and a common stem cell antigen. Stem cell factor (SCF) is the only known ligand for c-kit. Although c-kit is extensively used as an invariable marker of resident CPCs and shown to be important in the context of different cell …

For aesthetic, economic, and health-related reasons, allowable concentrations of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) found present in drinking water are 0.3 mg/L and 0.05 mg/L, respectively. Water samples taken from private drinking wells in the rural communities within Buncombe County, North Carolina contain amounts of these metals in concentrations higher than the suggested limits. This study focused on bedrock geology, elevation, saprolite thickness, and well depth to determine factors affecting Fe and Mn. Using ArcGIS 10.2, spatial trends in Fe and Mn concentrations ranges were visualized, and estimates of the metal concentrations were interpolated to unmonitored areas. Results from this …
In The Shadows Of Dominion: Anthropocentrism And The Continuance Of A Culture Of Oppression, Christopher A. Shields
In The Shadows Of Dominion: Anthropocentrism And The Continuance Of A Culture Of Oppression, Christopher A. Shields
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The oppression of nonhuman animals in Western culture observed in societal institutions and practices such as the factory farm, hunting, and vivisection, exhibits alarming linkages and parallels to some episodes of the oppression of human animals. This work traces the foundations of anthropocentrism in Western philosophy and connects them to the oppressions of racism, sexism, and ethnocentrism. In outlining a uniform theory of oppression detailed through the marginalization, isolation, and exploitation of human and nonhuman animals alike, parallels among the groups emerge as the fused oppression of each exhibits a commonality among them. The analysis conducted within this work highlights …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Six new crystal structures were determined using a Rigaku Mercurcy 375/MCCD(XtaLab mini) diffractometer. The structure of a molybdenum cofactor was solved resulting in an R1 (R1 = Σ ||Fo| - |Fc|| / Σ |Fo|) of 3.61% despite the presence of a disordered DMSO molecule. New Tetrakis(N-phenylacetamidato) Dirhodium(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. Two 2,2-cis-[Rh2(NPhCOCH3)4]•(C3H4N2)x where x= 1 or 2 were successfully crystallized and solved with R1 values below 5%. Additional studies were conducted via NMR to observe formation of both products. Three potential catalysts were synthesized starting with 3,1-[Rh2(NPhCOCH3)4]. The resulting compounds were a …
Using Geometric Morphometrics To Differentiate Lower First Molars Of Microtus Species: A Review Of The Clark’S Cave Bone Deposit, Va, Mark Shelleman
Using Geometric Morphometrics To Differentiate Lower First Molars Of Microtus Species: A Review Of The Clark’S Cave Bone Deposit, Va, Mark Shelleman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Clark’s Cave contains a large collection of late Pleistocene mammal material. In particular, it contains a sizable amount of Microtus spp. which can be valuable paleoclimate indicators. Identification techniques traditionally used to classify these species have been shown to be unreliable. Recent studies have shown that using geometric morphometric techniques on lower first molars can be more successful. By placing landmarks and running a discriminate analysis on new and previously collected material from the cave, significant differences in Microtus species proportions were found. Specifically, showing the deposit has a larger proportion of M. xanthognathus than previously reported; resulting in a …

Under The Shadow Of The Awful Gallows-Tree: The Murder Trials Of Thomas Dula And Ann Melton As A Case Study In Gender And Power In Reconstruction Era Western North Carolina, Heather L. Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is a micro-history that explores everyday life on a small scale by tracing the common, if elusive lives of Thomas Dula, Ann Melton, and Laura Foster, and the communities they lived in, to explore the culture in which they lived—and died. Reactions to the murder unleashed an outpouring of discourse embedded in broader, national debates concerning gender roles. The dominant cultural theme that emerged from the murder trials as reflected in middle-class newspapers maintained that true women did not kill and real men acted as gentlemen and defenders of women’s honor. The project mines a wealth of primary source …

Effects Of Select Vitamin E Isoforms On The Production Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Metabolites In Colorectal Cancer, Martha A. Borketey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vitamin E exhibits anti-tumor activity by regulating pathways in cancer cells, potentially the lipoxygenase (LOX) pathway. We studied the effects of alpha tocopherol (AT), gamma tocopherol (GT), gamma tocotrienol (GT3), and an alpha-gamma tocopherol mixture (ATGT) on the production of the LOX metabolites 13-hydroxyoctadecaenoic acid (HODE), 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE), 12-HETE, and 5-HETE in colorectal cancer. These metabolites were examined in the HCT-116 cell line after 24 h treatment with select vitamin E isoforms and quantified by LC/MS/MS. Under physiological conditions, we find that treatment with varying vitamin E isoforms have different effects on the production of 13-HODE, 15-HETE, 12-HETE, and …

Southerner As Other: Exploring Regional Identity Through The Southern Vampire, Lauren N. Fowler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since its conception in folklore and superstition, the vampire has had an innate ability to reflect the environment of the culture that creates it. Each manifestation of this being is entirely unique to the culture in which it is born. The vampire of the American South is no exception to this idea. As a region with a particularly tumultuous history, the South has been molded by many cultural influences. Religion, sexuality, and race are some of the most notable factors to have impacted the area. Many Southern authors writing vampire fiction explore the fears, stereotypes, and prejudices of the culture …
Role Of Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated Kinase In The Healing Process Of The Heart Following Myocardial Infarction, Laura L. Daniel
Role Of Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated Kinase In The Healing Process Of The Heart Following Myocardial Infarction, Laura L. Daniel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ataxia telangiectasia (AT), caused by mutations in the gene encoding ataxia telangiectasia mutated kinase (ATM), is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. AT individuals exhibit neuronal degeneration and are predisposed to cancer. Carriers of this disorder are predisposed to cancer and ischemic heart disease. Heart disease, mostly due to myocardial infarction (MI), is a leading cause of death in the US. Following MI, release of catecholamines in the heart stimulates β- adrenergic receptors (β-AR). Our lab has shown that β-AR stimulation increases ATM expression in the heart and myocytes, and ATM plays an important role in β-AR-stimulated myocardial remodeling with effects …

Relatively few studies have investigated the relationship between early childhood attentional control and later cognitive outcomes, especially language development. The current study is an investigation of the relationship between the executive functioning (EF) component of attentional control and language ability in the second year of life. More specifically, the predictive nature of two aspects of attentional control, attentional focus and resistance to distraction, was be the primary focus of the proposed study. Although it was expected that children both high in attentional focus and resistance to distraction would have significantly superior language development than infants with lower attentional capacities, analyses …
Additional Research And Taxonomic Resolution Of Salamanders (Amphibia: Caudata) From The Mio-Pliocene Gray Fossil Site, Tn, Hannah E. Darcy
Additional Research And Taxonomic Resolution Of Salamanders (Amphibia: Caudata) From The Mio-Pliocene Gray Fossil Site, Tn, Hannah E. Darcy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Gray Fossil Site (GFS), a Mio-Pliocene (4.5–7 Ma) locality in the southern Appalachians, boasts the most diverse pre-Pleistocene salamander fauna in North America: Desmognathus sp., Plethodon sp., Notophthalmus sp., a Spelerpinae-type plethodontid, and Ambystoma sp. Because greater taxonomic resolution can result in more precise paleobiological interpretations, additional specimens were studied here. ETMNH 8045, a nearly complete articulated ambystomatid, appears most like Ambystoma maculatum in dentition and vertebral proportions. ETMNH 18219, an isolated vomer, is consistent with modern Pseudotriton and Gyrinophilus in possessing a postdentigerous process and a similar dentigerous row morphology. If these taxa, or species …

This study investigated how media depictions of atheists might influence perceptions of them based on media theories of cultivation and priming. Severe distrust and dislike of atheists found in the literature indicated a need for the study. The measurement instrument used in the study asked a sample of 195 respondents to report their media consumption habits, including news sources, television shows, and movies, as well as identify real atheists in the public eye. Respondents were then asked to rate positive and negative statements about both atheists and religious people on a Likert scale and provide basic demographic information about themselves. …
Macrophage Cox-2 As A Target For Imaging And Therapy Of Inflammatory Diseases Using Theranostic Nanoemulsions, Sravan Kumar Patel
Macrophage Cox-2 As A Target For Imaging And Therapy Of Inflammatory Diseases Using Theranostic Nanoemulsions, Sravan Kumar Patel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Personalized medicine can be an approach to address the unsatisfactory treatment outcomes in inflammatory conditions such as cancer, arthritis, and cardiovascular diseases. A common feature of chronic diseases is the infiltration of pro-inflammatory macrophages at the disease loci. Infiltrating macrophages have been previously utilized for disease diagnosis. These features suggest that macrophages can be broadly applicable targets for simultaneous therapy and diagnosis. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of a lipid inflammatory mediator, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), is over expressed in macrophages infiltrating the pathological site. Inhibition of PGE2 leads to reduced inflammation, pain and macrophage infiltration. To utilize …
