Performance Metrics For Frequency Selective Surface-Based Sensors, Mahboobeh Mahmoodi, Kristen M. Donnell
Performance Metrics For Frequency Selective Surface-Based Sensors, Mahboobeh Mahmoodi, Kristen M. Donnell
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A frequency selective surface (FSS) is a periodic array of conductive elements (located on a dielectric substrate) that has a specific transmission or reflection response when illuminated with electromagnetic energy. Since the FSS response is sensitive to changes in substrate properties (permittivity, loss tangent, and thickness) as well as element geometry, FSS-based sensors have strong potential as a wireless sensing solution. To this end, this paper proposes three performance metrics (resonant frequency, resonant depth, and quality factor) to quantify the effect of substrate properties on sensor performance. These metrics are applied to a patch- A nd loop-based FSS sensor. The …

4h-Sic Electrostatic Microactuator With Optically Controlled Actuation, Feng Zhao, Marcus Daniel Trimble
4h-Sic Electrostatic Microactuator With Optically Controlled Actuation, Feng Zhao, Marcus Daniel Trimble
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents that actuation of a 4H-SiC electrostatic micro actuator was controlled by an optical signal. The micro actuator was monolithically integrated with a transistor switch on the 4H-SiC substrate. DC voltage bias on the transistor produced an electrostatic force on the micro actuator, which bended down the cantilever beam and caused a shift in the resonant frequency to a lower value. The transistor switched on when activated by UV illumination, and photogenerated current in the transistor reduced bias voltage on the micro actuator, which relaxed the electrostatic force and consequently increased the resonant frequency.

Chaotic Behavior In High-Gain Interleaved Dc-Dc Converters, Ahmad Alzahrani, Pourya Shamsi, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Cihan H. Dagli
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, chaotic behavior in high gain dc-dc converters with current mode control is explored. The dc-dc converters exhibit some chaotic behavior because they contain switches. Moreover, in power electronics (circuits with more passive elements), the dynamics become rich in nonlinearity and become difficult to capture with linear analytical models. Therefore, studying modeling approaches and analysis methods is required. Most of the high-gain dc-dc boost converters cannot be controlled with only voltage mode control due to the presence of right half plane zero that narrows down the stability region. Therefore, the need of current mode control is necessary to …

Complex computer systems and electric power grids share many properties of how they behave and how they are structured. A microgrid is a smaller electric grid that contains several homes, energy storage units, and distributed generators. The main idea behind microgrids is the ability to work even if the main grid is not supplying power. That is, the energy storage unit and distributed generation will supply power in that case, and if there is excess in power production from renewable energy sources, it will go to the energy storage unit. Therefore, the electric grid becomes decentralized in terms of control …

Predicting solar irradiance has been an important topic in renewable energy generation. Prediction improves the planning and operation of photovoltaic systems and yields many economic advantages for electric utilities. The irradiance can be predicted using statistical methods such as artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), or autoregressive moving average (ARMA). However, they either lack accuracy because they cannot capture long-term dependency or cannot be used with big data because of the scalability. This paper presents a method to predict the solar irradiance using deep neural networks. Deep recurrent neural networks (DRNNs) add complexity to the model without specifying …

The high performance of FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) in image processing applications is justified by its flexible reconfigurability, its inherent parallel nature and the availability of a large amount of internal memories. Lately, the Stochastic Computing (SC) paradigm has been found to be significantly advantageous in certain application domains including image processing because of its lower hardware complexity and power consumption. However, its viability is deemed to be limited due to its serial bitstream processing and excessive run-time requirement for convergence. To address these issues, a novel approach is proposed in this work where an energy-efficient implementation of SC …

On Linear Precoding Of Nonregenerative Mimo Relay Networks For Finite-Alphabet Source, Xiao Liang, Zhi Ding, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) relay could provide broader wireless coverage, better diversity, and higher throughput. Most existing precoder designs for either source or relay node are based on the assumption of Gaussian input signals. However, recent works have revealed possible performance loss of MIMO systems originally optimized for Gaussian source signals when applied to practical finite-alphabet source signals. In this work, we investigate the design problem of joint MIMO precoding for wireless two-hop nonregenerative cooperative relay networks under finite-alphabet source signals. We identify several structural properties of optimal precoders. Specifically, we provided the optimal left singular vectors of …

A set of Zn 1-x Cd x O thin films with different Cd concentrations was deposited on quartz substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). The properties of these films were investigated by variable angle and temperature dependent spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). The experimental Zn 1-x Cd x O thin films showed a red shift in the absorption edge with increasing Cd contents at room temperature. For ZnCdO films with the similar Cd concentration, it has been found that the film thickness has important effects on the optical constants (n, k). The variations of optical constants (n, k) and the band gap, …

A series of Al x Ga 1-x N/AlN/Sapphire films with x = 0.35–0.75 and different thickness of epi-layer were prepared by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) was used to study the temperature-dependent refractive indices and optical bandgaps of the Al x Ga 1-x N films ranging from 300 to 823 K. Parametric semiconductor (PSEMI) models were used to describe the dielectric functions of AlGaN/AlN layers. The fitting results of refractive index, energy bandgap, thickness and surface roughness at 300 K are in good agreement with photoluminescence (PL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements and the existing literature. We report, for the first time, a low cost, compact, and novel mechanically designed extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI)-based optical fiber sensor with a strain amplification mechanism for strain measurement. The fundamental design principle includes a buckled beam with a coated gold layer, mounted on two grips. A Fabry-Perot cavity is produced between the buckled beam and the endface of a single mode fiber (SMF). A ceramic ferrule is applied for supporting and orienting the SMF. The principal sensor elements are packaged and protected by two designed metal shells. The midpoint of the buckled beam will experience a deflection vertically when …

Secure Degrees Of Freedom For The Mimo Wire-Tap Channel With A Multi-Antenna Cooperative Jammer, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a multiple antenna wire-tap channel in the presence of a multi-antenna cooperative jammer is studied. In particular, the secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) of this channel is established, with $N-{t}$ antennas at the transmitter, $N-{r}$ antennas at the legitimate receiver, and $N-{e}$ antennas at the eavesdropper, for all possible values of the number of antennas, $N-{c}$, at the cooperative jammer. In establishing the result, several different ranges of $N-{c}$ need to be considered separately. The lower and upper bounds for these ranges of $N-{c}$ are derived and are shown to be tight. The achievability techniques developed rely …

This paper presents an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer-based optical fiber sensor (EFPI) for measuring three-dimensional (3D) displacements, including interfacial sliding and debonding during delamination. The idea employs three spatially arranged EFPIs as the sensing elements. In our sensor, the three EFPIs are formed by three endfaces of three optical fibers and their corresponding inclined mirrors. Two coincident roof-like metallic structures are used to support the three fibers and the three mirrors, respectively. Our sensor was calibrated and then used to monitor interfacial sliding and debonding between a long square brick of mortar and its support structure (i.e., a steel base plate) …

Design of power delivery networks for printed circuit boards hosting both analog and digital parts often employs small power islands for supplying power to sensitive components. While providing necessary isolation from noise generated by other components, the power islands also experience increased inductance due to current crowding at the bridge. In this paper, the inductance at a port on the power island has been quantified. The variation of port inductance with the bridge width and slot/gap width has been studied. It has been demonstrated that the increased inductance adversely affects the effectiveness of decoupling capacitors. This necessitates more careful design …

In this paper, a new method for ranking interval grey numbers to address the challenge in multi-criteria decision-making problems with interval grey numbers has been proposed. This new method involves the risk preferences of decision makers. First, we propose a new method to rank the interval grey numbers by comparing the possibility degree or whitened value. Second, we classify the decision makers into three different types according to their risk preferences then we establish the corresponding risk preference assumptions to solve the problem that different interval grey numbers with the same possibility degree or whitened value. Finally, we use a …

Using Subdivision Surface Technique To Solve Generalized Debye Sources Based Efie, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Jie Li, Balasubramaniam Shanker
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this work, we extend the idea of generalized Debye sources (GDS) method to electric field integral equation (EFIE) and establish a new well-conditioned GDS-EFIE. The principal challenge in implementing this approach arises from the difficulty in developing a robust solver for the surface Laplacian equation. In this paper, we propose using subdivision surfaces that permits such a solution due to the higher order continuous nature of the surface representation. This permits an efficient and effective solution. Thus, GDS-EFIE can be resolved within isogeometric analysis framework as an emerging approach for design-through-analysis. Several numerical results are provided to validate the …

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) is generated from a defect in two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystals (PC). By breaking the translation symmetry along the two orthogonal directions, the localized defect states can be supported within photonic bandgap of the PC. Particularly, we examine the characteristics of the point defect states along the azimuthal direction by the finite-difference (FD) based eigenvalue analysis. We find that vortex beam carrying OAM can be generated from the defect. The novel design can be easily integrated in optical circuits.

The SWL employs a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) based 2-D offset-fed parabolic reflector and can efficiently generate collimated SW with TM0 mode. On the other hand, the HIS structure is formed by a periodically arranged rectangular microstrip patch array. With the perturbation of the patches, leaky-wave radiation with m=-1 space harmonic mode can be excited. Furthermore, an additional secondary slit is properly designed in each unit cell in the …

In previous research, we introduced an automated localized, fusion-based algorithm to classify squamous epithelium into Normal, CIN1, CIN2, and CIN3 grades of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). The approach partitioned the epithelium into 10 segments. Image processing and machine vision algorithms were used to extract features from each segment. The features were then used to classify the segment and the result was fused to classify the whole epithelium. This research extends the previous research by dividing each of the 10 segments into 3 parts and uses a convolutional neural network to classify the 3 parts. The result is then fused to …

The electric field integral equation is a well-known workhorse for obtaining fields scattered by a perfect electric conducting object. As a result, the nuances and challenges of solving this equation have been examined for a while. Two recent papers motivate the effort presented in this paper. Unlike traditional work that uses equivalent currents defined on surfaces, recent research proposes a technique that results in well-conditioned systems by employing generalized Debye sources (GDS) as unknowns. In a complementary effort, some of us developed a method that exploits the same representation for both the geometry (subdivision surface representations) and functions defined on …

Precoder Design For Simultaneous Wireless Information And Power Transfer Systems With Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Xiaodong Zhu, Weiliang Zeng, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Existing research on a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system is based on the assumption of Gaussian inputs. However, the optimal design on Gaussian inputs may lead to dramatic performance loss for practical systems with finite-Alphabet inputs. This paper focuses on the precoder design for a SWIPT system with finite-Alphabet inputs and instantaneous channel state information over a multiple-input multiple-output channel. We formulate the optimal precoder design as an optimization problem, in which the objective is to maximize the mutual information over the channel from the transmitter to the information receiver under the constraints of transmit power and …

The Comprehensive Handling Of Safety In An Autonomous Robot Capstone Project, John G. Ciezki, Steve Eugene Watkins
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A systematic approach to safety issues is described in the context of an autonomous robot capstone project. The treatment of safety should not be an ad hoc or an after-thought aspect of design projects. Engineering students need to consider safety as an integral component of the design process and to identify and address hazards systematically in each stage of project work. Appropriate actions include researching professional standards and regulations, incorporating safety best practices, developing safety checklists and operating protocols, and providing significant safety documentation. Formal safety components were added to a capstone design project for electrical and computer engineering undergraduates …

In the presence of decoupling capacitors, the whole physical system can be split into two subsystems: 1) the field subsystem that is governed by Maxwell's equations that will be solved by the DGTD method, and 2) the circuit subsystem including the capacitor and its parasitic inductor and resistor, which is going to be characterized by the modified nodal analysis algorithm constructed circuit equations. With the aim to couple the two subsystems together, a lumped port is defined over …

A New Broadcast Wiretap Channel Model, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new broadcast wiretap channel (B-WTC) with a wiretapper who noiselessly taps into a fixed-length subset of the transmitted symbols of her choice, and observes the remainder through a noisy channel, is studied. An achievable strong secrecy rate region which extends Marton's inner bound to the proposed setting, is derived. Strong secrecy capacity regions for two classes of the new B-WTC, namely the new B-WTC with deterministic receivers, and the new B-WTC with degraded receivers and noisier wiretapper, are identified. These results extend the recently proposed new wiretap channel model to the broadcast setting.

New Models For Interference And Broadcast Channels With Confidential Messages, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new model for the interference channel with confidential messages (IC-CM) is introduced, where each receiver, besides his noisy observations, is provided with a fixed-length subset, of his choosing, of noiseless observations for the transmitted codewords of both users, making confidential communication more challenging than the previous such model. In addition, in the same spirit, a broadcast channel with confidential messages (BC-CM), where the receivers noiselessly tap into subsets of their choice of the transmitted codeword, is considered. Achievable strong secrecy rate regions for both models are derived. In both models, the size of the subset quantifies a secure rate …
