Thornton, a leader of the Black community and musician who performed with W.C. Handy, had won the title in a contest organized by the Memphis World newspaper in 1938 and held it until his death aged 90 in 1963.

An undated sheet with lyrics titled "Reply to the Bonnie Blue Flag" and claimed to be "composed by a Federal officer while a prisoner", was published by the pro-Unionist Memphis Bulletin newspaper during the Civil War.
"The Bonnie Blue Flag" was a marching song promoting the Confederate cause written in 1861.

32-page booklet titled "Yank Talk: A Review of A.E.F. Humor - Trench and Billet" printed in Paris, France, by Paul Dupont in 1919. It was produced for the servicemen of the American Expeditionary Force reflecting the humor expressed in regimental and unit publications. Though priced at one franc, a stamp on the cover notes that this copy was a gift of the American people through the American Red Cross.

The City Beautiful Commission of Memphis, Tennessee, organized annual Christmas Lighting Contests for residents, and, reflective of the segregated city, in the 1950s these were divided into a Negro Division and a White Division. A copy of the letter sent to Black Memphians in 1956 is included, along with the letter sent to white Memphians in 1957, and the 1956 rules for the White Division.
