Program for vocal and instrumental concerts performed by the students of Florence Synodical Female College in Florence, Alabama, on December 21 and 22, 1855. Founded in 1855 by the Presbyterian Synod of Nashville, Florence Synodical Female College trained genteel young women to take their place in the home and drawing room. The students came from across the South but mainly from northwest Alabama, and numbered around 100 in any year. The campus (which sat on the site of the current Florence Post Office) consisted of two substantial brick buildings: a dormitory and an academic building. Gracie Loretta Williams married Sergeant Alvin Cullum York in 1919. York (1887-1964) was born in Fentress County, Tennessee, as one of 11 children. Transcription of an interview with Helen Pusser in Adamsville, Tennessee, on August 8, 1978, by Dr. Charles W. Crawford of Memphis State University. The interview was transcribed by Carol Laney.
Helen Harris Pusser (1908-1987) was the mother of former McNairy County sheriff Buford Hayse Pusser (1937-1974). Pusser was Adamsville police chief and constable from 1962 to 1964 and then became county sheriff who campaigned against moonshining, gambling and prostitution along the Tennessee-Mississippi state line. He survived several assassination attempts but on August 12, 1967, he and his wife Pauline were shot and Pauline died. Pusser continued as sheriff until 1970 …

An account of Dr. James Chamberlain for the vaccination of enslaved people owned by the estate of Adam Gordon in Claiborne County, Mississippi, attached to a deposition dated October 29, 1836. Adam Gordon was paymaster of the Fifth Regiment, Mississippi Militia, during the War of 1812. He owned fifteen enslaved people by 1820. Adam Gordon died on August 25, 1836, and his wife Aletheia died on August 28, 1844, leaving the 2,400 acre "Woodland" plantation to their granddaughter Eugenia A. Calhoun.

Two appraisals of the property belonging to the estate of Adam Gordon completed by James P. Parker, H.N. Spencer and James Grafton on January 29 and March 21, 1845. A court warrant is attached. The first appraisal lists 24 enslaved people by name and the second lists another two. A military land warrant issued to Harrison Bennith [sic] in the name of Elizabeth Booker under the Military Bounty Land Act of March 22, 1852. The warrant was issued in Jackson, Missouri, on December 3, 1852. From 1775 to 1855 the United States granted bounty-land warrants for military service, primarily to encourage volunteer enlistments, but also to reward veterans for service during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and a variety of Indian wars, Indian removals, and other military actions during the 1850s. A letter from former Memphis mayor E.H. Crump to the staff of the "Commercial Appeal" newspaper dated May 23, 1939. The letter acknowledges the condolences of staff at the newspaper on the death of his son John (1910-1939) in a plane crash in Mississippi on May 2, 1939, while on a promotional tour for the Cotton Carnival. The plane was owned by the newspaper, and a reporter and the pilot were also killed.

Letter from E.H. Crump, Memphis, Tennessee, to Chancellor R.B.C. Howell, Seventh Chancery Division, Nashville, Tennessee, dated June 13, 1940. Crump refers to his opposition to U.S. Communist Party leader Earl Browder whom he describes as a traitor. From August 1939, Browder (1891-1973) was an outspoken opponent of American involvement in the Second World War. He was charged with passport fraud in early 1940 and was appealing his conviction when Crump wrote this letter. Browder's conviction was finally upheld by the Supreme Court in February 1941 and he was sent to prison for four years. His sentence was commuted by President …
