Transcription of a diary kept by 13 year-old Elma Duvall, from Belleville, Illinois, while she was in Memphis visiting her doctor uncle, Claude Duvall, in the summer of 1918. Also 11 letters received by Elma during her visit. The diary and letters were transcribed by Elma’s son, James Duvall Trabue, in 1992. Elma Florence Duvall was born on January 4, 1905 in Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois to Robert Elmore Duvall (1879-1962) and Luetta Viola Duvall (1876-1943). Elma had three sisters, Anna, Mabel and Lillian. She married James Edward Trabue (1901-1976) in 1932 and had one son, James. Elma died …

Menu from the Café Gayoso of the Hotel Gayoso in Memphis, Tennessee, dated Sunday, April 5, 1925. The dinner was accompanied by a musical program featuring the soprano Miss Maude Moreland under the direction of Signor Professore Paolo Grosso. James B. Cook designed a new hotel to replace the Gayoso House, built in 1842, that burned down in 1899. His U-shaped construction surrounded a courtyard screened from Front Street by a row of columns and opened in 1902. Afterwards, there was an effort to return the Gayoso to its former glory, but it never quite achieved the fame of the …

An advertising placard for the Tennessee Brewing Company of Memphis, Tennessee, undated. The brewery was originally organized in 1877 by G.H. Herbers as "The Memphis Brewing Company". In 1885, it was bought by J. W. Schorr, Casper Koehler, and associates, and soon became one of the largest breweries in the south. At one point, more than 1500 workers worked at the brewery and, by 1903, production was up to 250,000 barrels per year. Prohibition shut down operations but, after prohibition ended in 1933, the plant was reopened by J. W.'s son, John Schorr. Very rapidly they got back up to …

One side has the name of the store and its location and a note that it was registered in December 1877. It also states that "The Double-Thread Sewing Co.'s process makes Doubly-Strong Seams".
