The Demise Of Compassion: A Casualty Of A Changing Culture, Donald Grady Davis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There are numerous forces that influence and/or impact churches. The various effects of culture have become one of the greatest forces that churches and pastors are facing. Dealing with various cultures have always been a challenge for society and the church. Now, more than ever, the church needs to take a close look at the effects of cultural influence. Unfortunately, many churches are embracing cultures that are not consistent with the teachings of the Scripture. This project will address one such issue: The Demise of Compassion.
Gifted Dropouts: A Phenomenological Study, James Zabloski
Gifted Dropouts: A Phenomenological Study, James Zabloski
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative phenomenological study of the life experiences of seven rural gifted individuals who dropped out of school investigated whether they shared commonalities that might have led to the phenomenon of dropping out. The problem was that no one had asked them to share their stories prior to this study. By searching for meaning in their individual and combined stories, the overarching theme of relationships weaved through all of them. Three themes emerged which contributed to their drop out decision: relational traumas, relational losses, and relationships with teachers. All of these gifted dropouts experienced a significant relational trauma in middle …
Effective And Economical Outreach And Evangelism For The Small To Medium Church, Stanley Wayne Kesler
Effective And Economical Outreach And Evangelism For The Small To Medium Church, Stanley Wayne Kesler
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Pastors of small to medium size churches face a dilemma. Without exception, when asked in what areas they feel inadequate, inevitably one of the prominent deficiencies mentioned is outreach and evangelism. Many feel like they cannot compete with big-budget, high-attendance churches. Honest appraisal shows that most are facing attendance patterns that are declining or flat. Faced with the current economic depression, many churches experience a decrease in giving, and salaries, benefits and programs are either frozen or cut. What's a pastor to do?
The purpose of this project is to provide pastors of small to medium size churches with not …
A Balanced Biblical Approach To The King James Only Controversy, Aulton Bruce Brown
A Balanced Biblical Approach To The King James Only Controversy, Aulton Bruce Brown
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study is designed to approach the present translation controversy from a biblical perspective by demonstrating that, by creating King James Only doctrines not found in the Scriptures, King James Only advocates deny both the sole authority and complete sufficiency of the Scriptures. Their unbiblical assumptions about the King James translation and its underlying texts transform the debate from a debate over translations into a critical doctrinal debate over their acceptance of a dual authority created by their man-made doctrines and their refusal to submit to both the moral and ethical authority of the Scriptures.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine if teachers who developed lessons based on Bloom's Taxonomy and the Virginia Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework saw increased scores on the mathematics benchmark assessment for fourth grade. Two classes taught by different mathematics teachers participated. The mean of the posttest scores for the experimental group in which the teachers developed lessons using Bloom's Taxonomy would be significantly higher than the mean of the group which used textbook bound instruction. An analysis of covariance was conducted, and the hypothesis was rejected. The experimental group would yield significant gains as measured by the …

A Study Of Doubling Class Time For Low Achieving High School English And Math Students And The Impact On State Tests Required Under Nclb, Richard J. Ney
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in 2002, commonly known as the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), increased the accountability of public schools throughout the United States, holding them individually responsible for the education levels attained by their students as measured by high stakes tests developed and administered at the state level. Administrators responded by developing programs targeted at increasing students' test scores. One program considered by administrators is the doubling of class time in math and English for students that are at risk of not succeeding. This study analyzes the viability of such a program …

Preschool Education In Virginia And The Resulting Academic Effects For Third- And Fifth-Grade At-Risk Students, Pamela Perry Randall
Preschool Education In Virginia And The Resulting Academic Effects For Third- And Fifth-Grade At-Risk Students, Pamela Perry Randall
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
While there remains little doubt that the "founding" preschool programs in America--the High/Scope Perry Program, the Chicago Child-Parent Centers, and the Abecedarian Project--had a positive academic and social impact on the students they served, such claims are difficult to substantiate for students being served in the Virginia Preschool Initiative Program. This study was designed to investigate the educational impact of the state-funded preschool program on the academic achievement of at-risk students who attended school from 1999-2002. These students' third- and fifth-grade Standards of Learning tests, in the subject areas of mathematics and reading, were compared using T-tests and ANOVA calculations …

Data indicated social support and gender difference were found …
Brain-Based Learning Theory: The Incorporation Of Movement To Increase Learning, Eva Patrice Pennington
Brain-Based Learning Theory: The Incorporation Of Movement To Increase Learning, Eva Patrice Pennington
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study investigated the use of kinesthetic movement as a vehicle by which to teach grammar to high school students. Brain-based theorists believe that, since the anatomical parts of the brain that coordinate basic physical movement are also the physical components used to coordinate the movement of thought, movement is necessary for optimal learning to occur. While purposeful incorporation of movement in the classroom is a popular and increasingly important aspect of brain-based theory, little empirical evidence exists to support the experiences, conjectures, and evidence across multiple disciplines and neurological findings when applied to the high school student. The study …

Innovation Matters: The Use Of Innovation In Ministry Strategies For The Local Church, Travis Paul Drake
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There are a tremendous amount of people that are either unchurched or de-churched when compared to statistics from earlier years in America. The purpose of this thesis is to discover how the application of innovation in the local church makes an impact on ministry strategies today. One of the commandments given to the Church today is the Great Commission, and it is to be determined by each local church how that mandate will be fulfilled. In essence, when a church chooses to use innovation in reaching out to the community, innovation in itself becomes an outreach strategy.
