Nonverbal Cues In Real-World, High-Stakes Deception, Nancy L. Carr
Nonverbal Cues In Real-World, High-Stakes Deception, Nancy L. Carr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Decades of low-stakes deception research, in which participants lied without risk of severe personal, professional, or legal consequences, produced few reliable deception cues. As a result, deception detection methods based on low-stakes findings generated limited accuracy. More research was needed to identify reliable deception cues performed in real world scenarios. To address the problem, this within-subjects mixed methods study coded videos of public figures’ nonverbal (NV) cues during real-world high-stakes (RWHS) baseline, deception, and confession (BDC); tested each cue for significance; and identified demeanor (descriptively and quantitatively) for each condition. The qualitative study described how each subject’s behavior changed between …

This thesis studies a personal faith matched with kingdom-oriented impact within urban contexts. It unpacks transformational mission-based prayer, seeking …
The 12-Hour Shift: A Phenomenological Study Of Law Enforcement Trauma, Alexandria Reagan Arthur
The 12-Hour Shift: A Phenomenological Study Of Law Enforcement Trauma, Alexandria Reagan Arthur
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to better understand the emotional distress that Law Enforcement officers experience in a 12-hour shift of work in the southwest Virginia area. The emotional distress experienced can cause long term psychological and physical reactions. However, there is a stigma associated with the officers seeking mental health treatment which causes the likelihood of this stress to increase. If officers are open to nonjudgmental mental health support, there could be fewer mental health instabilities throughout the LEO career. This transformation could in turn help officers seek assistance during the course of their career as …

A Qualitative Study Of Federal Employee Whistleblowing And Reprisal For Whistleblowing, Bruce S. Mclean
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Federal employee whistleblowing is essential to holding government officials accountable. The U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC) was established in 1979 to provide a secure channel for federal government employees to report wrongdoing while protecting them from reprisal. More statutory protections were enacted with the Whistleblower Protection Act (WPA) in 1989; however, deficiencies in the WPA led to the eventual passage of the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act in 2012. The problem is that the literature on whistleblowing fails to distinguish the OSC as the Executive Branch whistleblower protection agency nor recognize its annual reports and surveys as the only known …

The lay leaders of Call to Conquer Ministries do not seem to understand this role, leading to ministry challenges. This research aims to provide a deeper understanding of the role of sacrifice in leadership and how to maintain resiliency during difficult times. Potential leaders answer God’s call to lead, believing that “obedience is better than sacrifice" (1 Samuel 15:22a). However, there is a lack of full clarity concerning the sacrifices made because of their obedience. The question to be addressed is “What …
