The Reported Experience And Stigma Of Mental Health Among African American Clergy, Valentina Stubbs
The Reported Experience And Stigma Of Mental Health Among African American Clergy, Valentina Stubbs
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The utilization of mental health treatment in the Black community has been diminished in comparison to other ethnic groups (Avent, Cashwell, & Brown-Jeffy, 2015). Members of the Black Church may have been socialized to seek help from their spiritual leader as opposed to mental health professionals. A transcendental phenomenological qualitative study (Moustakas, 1994) was used to gain an understanding of how twelve (5 male and 7 female) Black clergy experience mental health and the stigma relating to mental health. The participants completed a survey and a semi-structured interview with the researcher and described their experience with mental health issues personally …

High Musical Achievement In Underserved High School Band Programs: A Qualitative Study, Delton Marcus Brown
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Although information is available detailing methods and strategies for high achievement in school band programs, very little is synthesized specifically addressing high schools in urban, inner-city, and other underserved student populations. This study explores the effects of cultural responsiveness, director-student relationships, and establishing and maintaining high standards on student motivation and overall program achievement. The data collected in this study originate from five Texas band directors in minority-majority programs where the school comprises a student population with over 60 percent eligibility for free and/or reduced lunch. These directors have all made significant achievements at the high school level in the …

“Go, Then, To The Front As Temperate Men:” The U.S. Army, Temperance Advocacy, And Lessons Learned To 1873, Megan M.S. Nishikawa
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation examines the long history of attempted liquor controls applied within the American army, from pre-revolution to the Civil War, culminating with a close look at the Union’s Army of the Potomac. This work details how the Union’s battle to control the effects of intoxicating liquors and sober up drunk troops from the commencement of hostilities in 1861 to 1865 reflected the historic efforts of the antebellum temperance movement, and describes how the experience of war prepared the next generation of temperance crusaders to rebuild a more profoundly religious, effective, and female driven temperance movement in the post-war decade.
The Role Of Value Congruence On Millennial Employee Organizational Commitment, Victoria Henry Weatherbee
The Role Of Value Congruence On Millennial Employee Organizational Commitment, Victoria Henry Weatherbee
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Recent studies have indicated that employee value congruence may influence the overall organizational commitment of a workforce. Despite the current research, there remains a gap in understanding how the Millennial generation of employees may compare to other generations in the values they hold. As the Millennial generation of employees continues to grow into the biggest working population, older workers are beginning to leave the organizations. This transition combined with the evolution of cultural norms and an ever-increasing workforce across nations are requiring organizational leaders to reexamine how to retain Millennial employees in a meaningful way. While studies have focused on …

Investigating Nurses Lived Experiences Toward Family Presence During Resuscitation To Enhance The Future Of Nursing Curriculum, Laurie Stone
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Death is inevitable, but dying alone can be an agonizing prospect for patients and their families. Family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) is a controversial but evidence-based concept that helps relieve some of the fear and anxiety for the family. Sadly, loved ones are often not allowed to be with the patient during resuscitation. FPDR importance is typically taught within the healthcare setting but still lacks implementation. By starting education while healthcare students are in a higher learning setting, this concept has a higher probability of success. To fill the gap concerning FPDR, this researcher interviewed nurses who have witnessed FPDR. …

The Online Member’S Experience Of Pastoral Care Through Worship, Ryan Michael Loche
The Online Member’S Experience Of Pastoral Care Through Worship, Ryan Michael Loche
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Online church services are normative for many churches. Given the relentless nature of creating a service every Sunday, church and worship leaders often do not consider how the online participant experiences the service they are viewing. Virtual reality church services are not yet as ubiquitous as online services but also warrant study. Careful attention must be given to how and why a church provides online and virtual services for its members. To not do so is a disservice to congregants and potentially a waste of time and resources for a church. This phenomenological qualitative study through the lens of a …

Ink Therapy: The Use Of Tattoos By Male Survivors Of Sexual Trauma, Lisa M. Johnson
Ink Therapy: The Use Of Tattoos By Male Survivors Of Sexual Trauma, Lisa M. Johnson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
With the advancement of the feminist movement, our society typically views the experience of sexual trauma as a female issue. The male perpetrator–female victim dyad is the most academically researched and socially recognized experience of sexual trauma. The continued focus on that dyad leaves the male experience of sexual trauma underrepresented in scholarly literature and socially misunderstood. When seeking post-trauma clinical treatment & social support, the shame and stigma associated with male rape myths may represent significant barriers. These barriers leave male survivors to exercise autonomy in finding effective means of identity reformation and coping. The purpose of this phenomenological …

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand speech-language pathologists’ (SLP) self-efficacy beliefs toward assessing culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students within public elementary schools in California. Bandura’s self-efficacy theory guided this study since it evaluated SLPs’ belief in their capacity to manage their motivation, behavior, and social environment to carry out appropriate assessment procedures for CLD students. As not all students from CLD backgrounds are accurately identified, gathering the SLPs’ lived experiences regarding current assessment practices helped provide insight into the appropriate identification of SLI. Participants included SLPs employed by rural public school districts in California, with students …
