Boron Implanted Strontium Titanate, Connie Macdonald Cooper
Boron Implanted Strontium Titanate, Connie Macdonald Cooper
Doctoral Dissertations
"Single crystals of strontium titanate implanted with boron were found to have highly conductive surface layers. The effects of varying dose from 1016 to 1017 ions/cm2, implantation voltage from 50 to 75 keV, and annealing conditions on the room temperature surface resistance and Hall mobility are presented in this study. A major result is that, for the most part, variation of the implantation voltage did not have a major effect on the sheet resistances obtained by boron implantation of strontium titanate, while dose and annealing conditions have major effects.
Doses of 5 X 1016 ions/cm …
An Investigation Of The Nickel-Cobalt Occurrence In The Southeast Missouri Mining District, David Ray Jessey
An Investigation Of The Nickel-Cobalt Occurrence In The Southeast Missouri Mining District, David Ray Jessey
Doctoral Dissertations
"A study of the occurrence of nickel and cobalt in the Southeast Missouri Mining District has revealed several significant geochemical trends and mineralogical relationships. Regional geochemical studies indicate that the greatest concentration of nickel and cobalt occurs in the Fredericktown area. Mines in the Viburnum Trend also have significant concentrations of these metals. Studies of the Viburnum Trend have established that both nickel and cobalt decrease in concentration southward from the Magmont mine to the Brushy Creek mine, increase at the Fletcher mine, and decrease again at the Sweetwater mine.
A detailed geochemical study of the Buick mine has shown …
Neutron Activation Analysis Of Nuclides From Stellar And Man-Induced Nuclear Reactions, Lawrence Lee Oliver
Neutron Activation Analysis Of Nuclides From Stellar And Man-Induced Nuclear Reactions, Lawrence Lee Oliver
Doctoral Dissertations
"Neutron activation and γ-counting were used to determine the relative abundances of six stable tellurium isotopes in the acid-etched residues of the Allende meteorite. The results were correlated with the isotopic compositions of xenon and the elemental abundances of helium and neon in similarly prepared residues. Nucleosynthesis appears to be the only viable explanation for the anomalous isotopic and elemental compositions observed in these residues. Our results suggest that the solar system condensed from an isotopically and chemically zoned nebula that was produced by the explosion of a supernova, concentric with the present sun.
A combination of neutron activation and …

A Molecular Orbital Study Of 5-Fluorouracil And Related Compounds, Frank Block
A Molecular Orbital Study Of 5-Fluorouracil And Related Compounds, Frank Block
Doctoral Dissertations
5-fluorouracil is a chemotherapeutic agent which is used in the treatment of disseminated colon and breast cancers. As an antimetabolite it has been found to inhibit the mechanism in which the normal substrate reacts with the enzyme and a cofactor in nucleic acid synthesis. A number of mechanisms have been summarized describing the conversion of deoxyuridylate (dUMP) to deoxythymidylate (dTMP), elucidating the role of the involved enzyme, thymidylate synthetase, and the co-factor, N('5), N('10)-methylenetetrahydrofolate. The effect of replacing the hydrogen bonded to the 5-position of the pyrimidine ring by a fluorine atom is also mechanistically described. A molecular orbital study …
Cadmium(Ii), Lead(Ii), And Copper(Ii) Complexation By Fulvic Acids Derived From Soil And Water: Ion-Selective Electrode And Spectrofluorometric Studies, Robert A. Saar
Doctoral Dissertations
This study describes complexation of metal ions by fulvic acid, the acid soluble fraction of organic matter found in soils (SFA) and water bodies (WFA). Such complexation affects the toxicity and geochemical mobility of heavy-metal ions. All the work was performed with two previously isolated and characterized fulvic acids: one from a podzol soil and the other from a freshwater river. The work is divided into three major sections.
I. Complexation of Cd('2+) by fulvic acid. The conditional stability constants for complexes between aqueous Cd('2+) and the two fulvic acids were studied by Cd('2+) ion-selective electrode potentiometry. A temperature of …

Topics In Quantum Field Theory, Charles Henry Tabb
Topics In Quantum Field Theory, Charles Henry Tabb
Doctoral Dissertations
A gauge invariant action functional for non-abelian gauge theories is derived from the vacuum to vacuum transition amplitude. This effective action is then examined in the loop expansion, where it is demonstrated that the unrenormalized one-loop term is equal to the change in the zero point energy of the theory due to the presence of a non-vanishing background field. The one loop term is carefully evaluated in Euclidean space, and the positivity of the one-loop eigenvalues is related to classical stability in terms of energy minimality. The case of negative eigenvalues is considered and a procedure for "regularizing" the one …
The Seasonality Of Pathology: A Sociological Analysis, M Keith Farrington
The Seasonality Of Pathology: A Sociological Analysis, M Keith Farrington
Doctoral Dissertations
This study looks at the seasonal periodicity of a number of different social pathologies, including suicide, mortality resulting from disease, the onset of physical illness, and criminal behavior. Using time-series data from the United States, for 132 consecutive months between 1965-1975, it is found that virtually all of the behaviors investigated do demonstrate some consistent pattern of seasonal incidence.
A sociological theory, based upon the macro-level concept, "the pace of social life," is suggested as the cause of these seasonal variations in pathology. This theory contends that, for reasons which are cultural, economic and/or climatological in nature, certain periods of …
The Status Of Women And Wife-Beating In The U S: A Multi-Level Analysis, Kersti Alice Yllo
The Status Of Women And Wife-Beating In The U S: A Multi-Level Analysis, Kersti Alice Yllo
Doctoral Dissertations
The relationship between status of women and wife-beating has been the subject of some debate. It has been argued that sexual inequality is one of the central causes of wife abuse (Dobash and Dobash, 1980; Martin, 1976). On the other hand, some claim that the charges being brought about by the Women's Movement are resulting in an increase in wife-beating. Researchers in the field of family violence have speculated on the connection between the two phenomena (Whitehurst, 1974; Straus, 1976; Dobash and Dobash, 1977). To date, the relationship between the status of women on the societal level and wife-beating has …
The Vertical Structure Of Estuarine Tidal Currents, Ronnal Paul Reichard
The Vertical Structure Of Estuarine Tidal Currents, Ronnal Paul Reichard
Doctoral Dissertations
The surface slope induced pressure gradient, mean current velocity profile, and bottom stress are investigated both theoretically and experimentally for a tidal channel in a well-mixed estuary. The theory focuses on the use of eddy viscosity models. Surface slope estimates based on tide predictions, current velocity profile measurements, and stress estimates from near bottom turbulence measurements are used to investigate the dynamic balance in the tidal channel, and to evaluate the eddy viscosity models. The principal terms in the dynamic balance were found to be the surface slope induced pressure gradient and the bottom stress. The magnitude of the near …
Markets And Merchants: Economic Diversification In Colonial Virginia, 1700-1775, Peter Victor Bergstrom
Markets And Merchants: Economic Diversification In Colonial Virginia, 1700-1775, Peter Victor Bergstrom
Doctoral Dissertations
While the literature detailing the intricacies of the colonial tobacco trade is extensive, and often quite persuasive, its conclusion that Virginia's economy began and ended in the production of tobacco is misleading. Virginia's expansion into previously unsettled lands, and the tremendous increase in the size of its labor force during the first three quarters of the eighteenth century did produce a gigantic growth in the tobacco trade, but it had other effects as well. Grain and meat products along with naval stores and iron contributed little to the colony's economic output in 1701, yet by 1774 they accounted for better …
Good Wives: A Study In Role Definition In Northern New England, 1650-1750, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
Good Wives: A Study In Role Definition In Northern New England, 1650-1750, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes the productive, sexual, and public roles of married women living in the province of New Hampshire and the two Massachusetts counties which bordered it, Essex County to the south and York County (now Maine) to the north and east. Because there are no female diaries for the period and few letters, the study depends upon an accumulation of evidence from court records, account books, probate inventories, church records, paintings, embroideries, gravestones, genealogical records, captivity narratives, sermons, and the letters and diaries of husbands and sons.
The discussion is organized around three Biblical archetypes frequently employed in early …
The Construction Of A Logical-Empirical Structure Of Knowledge For Differential Calculus Using A Theoretical Framework Based Upon Learning Hierarchy Theory And Order Theory, James Martin Devecchi
The Construction Of A Logical-Empirical Structure Of Knowledge For Differential Calculus Using A Theoretical Framework Based Upon Learning Hierarchy Theory And Order Theory, James Martin Devecchi
Doctoral Dissertations
The principal result of this study is a logically and empirically valid Structure of Knowledge for Differential Calculus constructed using a methodology based on Learning Hierarchy Theory (LHT) and Order Theory (OT). A review of existing research into calculus learning is presented and properties of the strucutre of knowledge which address deficiencies in existing knowledge discussed. LHT is developed and techniques for the empirical validation and generation of hierarchies are discussed. Included in this discussion is a detailed analysis of the important properties of OT.
The generation of the structure of knowledge consisted of two phases: the logical analysis and …
Phosphate Adsorption And Desorption On Two Contrasting Soils Used For Land Treatment Of Wastewater, Stephen Arthur Gasiorowski
Phosphate Adsorption And Desorption On Two Contrasting Soils Used For Land Treatment Of Wastewater, Stephen Arthur Gasiorowski
Doctoral Dissertations
Land treatment of wastewater involves the use of plants and the soil to remove unwanted constituents. Removal of phosphorus is particularly important to avoid excessive biological activity in water systems receiving the treated wastewater. This research examines the phosphate adsorption - desorption behavior of two soils: Charlton silt loam, a typical acid soil from New England which is being used in experimental wastewater treatment, and Tujunga coarse sandy loam from a wastewater land treatment facility located at Manteca, California, which has failed to remove phosphate from wastewater efficiently.
The effects of changing the pH and phosphate content of municipal wastewater …

Doctoral Dissertations
Part 1. Some Chemical Constituents of the Brown Alga, Agarum cribosum. Agarum cribosum was examined for major chemical constituents. Halogenated terpenes found in red algae were not present in this seaweed. The sterol content was determined by GC/MS analysis and six sterols were identified: fucosterol, 24-methylenecholesterol, cholesterol, 24-ketocholesterol, saringosterol, and desmosterol. The presence of desmosterol in brown algae had not been previously confirmed. A seventh sterol could not be identified from its mass spectrum. The fatty acid content was also determined by GC/MS analysis. The major fatty acids were C(,16:0), C(,16:1), C(,20:4) and C(,22:5). The sugar mannitol was isolated.

The Influence Of Fulvic Acid On Copper(Ii), Cadmium(Ii) And Zinc(Ii) Removal From Drinking Water By Alum Coagulation And Copper(Ii) And Cadmium(Ii) Complexing Capacity Measurements Of Fulvic Acid And Natural Freshwater Samples By Dialysis Titration, Ralph Edward Truitt
Doctoral Dissertations
The metal ion complexing chemistry of organic ligands commonly found in drinking water sources is the object of the studies in this dissertation. These ligands, called humics as a class, were modelled in some cases by a soil-derived humic material called fulvic acid. The role of natural humics in the transport and speciation of dissolved metal ions in drinking water sources, particularly health hazards like Cd('2+), is investigated. Some properties of soil-derived fulvic acid (SFA) were also elucidated.
One study modelled a drinking water clarification and decolorizing process using aluminum hydroxide coagulation to measure Cd('2+), Zn('2+) and Cu('2+) removal from …
Interpretation Of Narrow Beam Sonar Echos Using A Variable Impedance Subbottom Model, Robert Leicester Bolus
Interpretation Of Narrow Beam Sonar Echos Using A Variable Impedance Subbottom Model, Robert Leicester Bolus
Doctoral Dissertations
An underwater antenna consisting of an acoustic paraboloid reflector with a 12 kHz transducer mounted at its focus was designed and built for remote sensing of the subbottom {1}. Surveys taken with the 3 degree half-power beamwidth projector operating in a 1/2 ms pulsed mode indicated horizontal and vertical resolutions of less than 1 m with penetration into the sediments of up to 20 m at 20 m of depth. The image detail was substantially increased over that taken with a conventional 30 degree profiler.
The data was interpreted using a physical model of the subbottom consisting of plane parallel …
Sex Role Stereotypes: A Study In Verbal Interaction, Edmond Sydney Temple
Sex Role Stereotypes: A Study In Verbal Interaction, Edmond Sydney Temple
Doctoral Dissertations
Sociologists appear in agreement that sex is a primary role allocator in our society, or, in the perspective of Hughes (1945), sex is a master status. Parsons and Bales (1955) have implicity built upon this in the formulation of their Sex Role Differentiation Theory in which role sets for male.
The Functional Role Of Asterias Vulgaris Verrill (1866) In Three Subtidal Communities, Alan Wilson Hulbert
The Functional Role Of Asterias Vulgaris Verrill (1866) In Three Subtidal Communities, Alan Wilson Hulbert
Doctoral Dissertations
The functional role of Asterias vulgaris has been investigated in three subtidal communities at the Isles of Shoals, New Hampshire, U.S.A., from 1975 to 1980. The three communities are located at depths of 8 m, 18 m, and 30 m along a transect from the intertidal to a depth of 35 meters on rocky substrate of an exposed shore.
Components of the study based on in-situ observations included an analysis of population structures, feeding biology, flux rates, predators and natural history of Asterias vulgaris in the 3 communities. The feeding data shows a series of prey specializations by size such …
A Molecular Dynamics Study Of The Stability Of Small Prenucleation Water Clusters, Tze-Shan Chen
A Molecular Dynamics Study Of The Stability Of Small Prenucleation Water Clusters, Tze-Shan Chen
Doctoral Dissertations
"The dynamical stability and internal energy distribution of prenucleation water embryos have been studied by the molecular dynamic's method. Water clusters containing either five or twenty molecules were chosen to represent prenucleation embryos of small or intermediate size. A central force potential model of water which allows energy to be absorbed into intramolecular modes so that bond lengths and bond angles could adjust to changes in molecular environments was employed to describe the interaction between all pairs of atoms. The motion of the molecules was followed for extended time periods (of the order of several picoseconds) at each of a …
Thermally Stimulated Polarization And Depolarization Current (Tspc/Tsdc) In Glass, Chi-Ming Hong
Thermally Stimulated Polarization And Depolarization Current (Tspc/Tsdc) In Glass, Chi-Ming Hong
Doctoral Dissertations
"The feasibility of studying ionic motion in glass using thermally stimulated polarization (TSPC)/depolarization current (TSDC) techniques was investigated with 4Na₂O·96SiO₂ and 30PbO·70SiO₂ (mol%) glasses. The TSDC peaks in these glasses were dependent on glass composition and attributed to bulk polarization. The high temperature background TSPC is shown to be due to dc conductivity, whereas the TSPC/TSDC peaks in the 4Na₂O glass are attributed to shorter range Na+ motion.
The electrical conductivity of glasses determined by TSPC agrees well with that measured by conventional ac or dc techniques. The TSPC technique is a rapid and easy method of measuring the …
Amorphous-Damage Depth Distributions And The Amorphization Of Silicon By Ion Bombardment, Joseph Sadowski
Amorphous-Damage Depth Distributions And The Amorphization Of Silicon By Ion Bombardment, Joseph Sadowski
Doctoral Dissertations
"Depth distributions of the radiation damage in moderately to heavily ion bombarded silicon was obtained in the following manner: The electron spin resonance signal from an ion bombarded silicon target was measured. This ESR signal was proportional to the amount of amorphous silicon present in the target. A thin oxide of specified thickness was then grown on the surface of the target by anodic oxidation and subsequently stripped off in a HF etch. The depth of the stripped impression below the unoxidized surface was measured using a multibeam interferometer. The amorphous ESR signal was again measured, and the strip / …
Algorithms For Fixed Points Of Nonexpansive Operators, Michael Donald Humphries
Algorithms For Fixed Points Of Nonexpansive Operators, Michael Donald Humphries
Doctoral Dissertations
"Browder proved that in a Hilbert space or a uniformly convex Banach space every non-expansive self-map of a closed, bounded, and convex set has a fixed point. This dissertation contains two algorithms for finding a fixed point of such an operator. The first is a special case of the Mann process. It averages two points which are relatively distant to obtain a better approximation to a fixed point. Under Browder's hypotheses, there is a fixed point which is the limit of a sequence of fixed points of contractions. The second algorithm uses Richardson extrapolation to accelerate the convergence of this …
Angular Differential Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To Its N=2 Level By Impact Of 15-100 Kev He⁺ Ions, John Eldon Aldag
Angular Differential Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To Its N=2 Level By Impact Of 15-100 Kev He⁺ Ions, John Eldon Aldag
Doctoral Dissertations
Differential cross sections Ear excitation of atomic hydrogen to its n = 2 level by 15-100 keV He+ ions have been determined for cm. angles from Oto 8 m rad. The cross sections were obtained from an analysis of the angular distribution of the scattered ions which had lost an energy corresponding to the excitation of the target to its n= 2 level. The shape of the differential cross section changes rapidly with increasing incident energy. At 15 keV, the cross section falls off by a factor of 5 in 6 m rad. At 100 keV, the cross section …
Solutions Of Differential Inequalities And Existence Theorems For Multi-Point Boundry Value Problems, Paul W. Eloe
Solutions Of Differential Inequalities And Existence Theorems For Multi-Point Boundry Value Problems, Paul W. Eloe
Doctoral Dissertations
"Consider the boundary value problem y = 0, y(a) = 0, y(b) = O. The Green's function G(x,s) for this problem is negative for all (x,s) in (a,b) x (a,b). More generally, define the operator L by (formula presented).
If L is disconjugate on [a,b], then the Green's function for the problem
Ly = 0,
y(i) (x.) = O, j=1, ..., k and i=0, ..., nj-1
where rnj = n and a= x1 < x2 < ... < xk = b, satisfies the inequality (formula presented)
This implies G(x,s) satisfies the condition, called Condition S, that its sign is independent …
The Kinetics Of Dissociation Of Five-Coordinate Transition Metal Complexes In Nonaqueous And Mixed Media, Nancy Lou Gottke
The Kinetics Of Dissociation Of Five-Coordinate Transition Metal Complexes In Nonaqueous And Mixed Media, Nancy Lou Gottke
Doctoral Dissertations
Five-coordinate complexes of nickel (II), cobalt (II), and copper (II), were prepared from the quadridentate ligand tris-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)-amine, a ligand which forms high-spin trigonal bipyramidal complexes. Previous studies of the dissociation of these complexes in aqueous perchloric acid revealed a single step kinetic process.
Dissociation of the cobalt (II) complex was undertaken in acetonitrile, in dimethyl sulfoxide, and in N,N-dimethylformamide, with monochloroacetic acid as the dissociating agent. Multi-step kinetic behavior was observed. The rate-determining step was considerably faster in dimethyl sulfoxide and in N,N-dimethylformamide than in acetonitrile and in water. Possible mechanisms for the dissociation reaction are described and discussed in …
