A Craving For History: Immigrant Themes In Jewish-American Literature, Jeffrey Saperstein
A Craving For History: Immigrant Themes In Jewish-American Literature, Jeffrey Saperstein
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is a cross-generational study of three immigrant themes in Jewish-American literature: transformation, freedom, and connection. It covers a number of twentieth century writers whose central concerns revolve around issues of assimilation. Chapter I gives a brief overview of the topic.
Chapter II examines the various means by which the immigrant sought to achieve American status. Writers discussed include Mary Antin, Anzia Yezierska, Elias Tobenkin, Michael Gold, Norman Podhoretz, and Saul Bellow. Chapter III is an in-depth study of Abraham Cahan's The Rise of David Levinsky (1917), a rags-to-riches story of a poor immigrant's rise up the ladder of …
Unsteady-State Cylindrical, Spherical And Linear Flow In Porous Media, Allan Jeffrey Anthony Joseph
Unsteady-State Cylindrical, Spherical And Linear Flow In Porous Media, Allan Jeffrey Anthony Joseph
Doctoral Dissertations
"The general problem of unsteady flow phenomena in porous media as considered in this investigation. Emphasis was placed upon the short-term flow characteristics within cylindrical, spherical and linear reservoir geometries, and practical analysis methods were developed for each problem. Additionally, nonlinear unsteady flow behavior in infinite reservoirs was considered. Each solution obtained could optionally be implemented by hand or computer, and several FORTRAN subprograms were also presented.
At present, the only way to analyze pressure transient data prior to the development of the "semi log straight line" is by type curve matching techniques. However, this study indicated that a reliable …
Applications Of Finite And Wave Envelope Element Approximations To Acoustic Radiation From Turbofan Engine Inlets In Flight, A. V. Parrett
Applications Of Finite And Wave Envelope Element Approximations To Acoustic Radiation From Turbofan Engine Inlets In Flight, A. V. Parrett
Doctoral Dissertations
"The problem of acoustic radiation from turbofan engine inlets in flow has not lent itself fully to analysis by numerical means because of the large domains and high frequencies involved. This project has extended the use of finite elements and wave envelope elements, elements which simulate decay and wavelike behaviour in their interpolation functions, from the no-flow case in which they have been proven, to cases incorporating mean flow. By employing an irrotational mean flow assumption, the acoustics problem has been posed in an axisymmetric formulation in terms of acoustic velocity potential, thus minimising computer solution storage requirements. The wave …
Using Prisms To Excite Leaky Waves Or To Launch Surface Electromagnetic Waves, Gerald Kent Sirotiak
Using Prisms To Excite Leaky Waves Or To Launch Surface Electromagnetic Waves, Gerald Kent Sirotiak
Doctoral Dissertations
"The ability of prisms to couple incident VEM radiation from a laser beam into leaky waves or to launch surface electromagnetic waves has been investigated. We have set out to discover wheth~r or not a single prism placed above an air-metal interface can be used to couple light from a laser beam into leaky electromagnetic waves. We have then attempted to relate the single prism technique to tb.e double prism technique for launching surface waves. We have also compared the coupling into a single interface to that into a waveguide.
We have found that prisms are unable to couple incident …
The Modeling And Control Of Freeze Dryers, Martin James Millman
The Modeling And Control Of Freeze Dryers, Martin James Millman
Doctoral Dissertations
"Two models of the freeze drying process were constructed and used to study various operational policies in order to determine the policy that would provide the shortest drying times.
The sublimation model which accounts only for the removal of frozen water, is found to predict shorter times for the free water removal phase than the sorption-sublimation model which properly accounts for the removal of frozen and bound water.
This study shows that the policy which produces the shortest free water removal phase, also produces the shortest overall drying time. This policy, predicted by both models, holds the chamber pressure at …

Angular Differential Cross Sections For The Excitation Of 1¹S Helium To The 2¹S And 2¹P States By 25- To 100-Kev Proton Impact, Thomas Jay Kvale
Doctoral Dissertations
"Angular differential cross sections for the proton impact excitation of ground state helium (11S) to the 21S and 21P states have been measured for the first time in the energy range 25- to 100-keV using the energy-loss technique. The present data have been numerically summed over the 21Sand 21P states to produce differential cross sections for excitation to the composite n=2 state and are in excellent agreement with previous experimental measurements of that process. Total cross sections have been obtained by numerically integrating the present data over scattering angle. and …

A Study Of The Permeability Of Clays Subjected To Organic And Inorganic Permeants, Janardanan O. Uppot
Doctoral Dissertations
"Two types of clays, a magnesium montrnorillonite and a kaolinite, were subjected to precise permeability tests in specially designed triaxial permeameters, using organic and inorgani c permeants, to study the changes in permeability due to the reaction between clays and permeants. The organic permeants were an acid (acetic acid), a base (aniline), a neutral polar fluid (methanol), a neutral nonpolar fluid (xylene), as well as EDTA and its sodium salt. The inorganic permeants were aqueous solutions of aluminum, magnesium, sodium, calcium, barium and strontium.
The clay samples were prepared by consolidating from slurry; they were subjected to back-pressure saturation and …
Semantic Segmentation Of Print Advertisements, Clifford James Cox
Semantic Segmentation Of Print Advertisements, Clifford James Cox
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to construct a comprehensive model of advertisement perception. The model's relationship to persuasion, recall and recognition measures of advertisement effectiveness was explored. The research demonstrated that print advertisements are perceived primarily across three general semantic dimensions. These dimensions were named Evaluation, Potency and Activity. The relationship between the three dimensions and similar semantic dimensions reported in the Semantic Differential literature is discussed.
In this research, 32 liquor, jewelry and perfume advertisements were studied. The relationship between the advertisements' persuasion, recall and recognition scores, and the advertisements' Evaluation, Potency and Activity scores is assessed. The …
The Determination Of Stability Constants And Complexing Capacities Of Natural Organic Matter For Copper (2+), Cobalt (2+) And Manganese (2+) By Fluorescence Quenching Titration, David K. Ryan
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to develop methodologies for the investigation of the metal ion binding properties of natural humic substances. Humic materials are prevalent in soil and water and their important metal ion detoxification and transport properties are the major justification for this work. The primary emphasis is the determination of the complexing capacity of a sample for a particular metal ion under fixed conditions.
The initial part of the investigation involves the application of chelating ion exchange to remove and quantify humic-chelated trace metal ions from water samples. Amine, dithiocarbamate and 8-hydroxyquinoline chelating agents immobilized on porous …
The Theoretical Genesis Of Capital Using A Commodity Theory Of Value, Spencer Jay Pack
The Theoretical Genesis Of Capital Using A Commodity Theory Of Value, Spencer Jay Pack
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to show that the basic framework of Marx's analysis of capitalism is sufficiently independent of the labor theory of value to survive the replacement of the labor theory of value with a Sraffian-based commodity theory of value. It addresses a problem posed by such economists as Joan Robinson and Ian Steedman. They criticize the labor theory value from a Sraffian perspective. They argue that economists should use a basically Marxian framework when analyzing capitalism, but not use the labor theory of value. The question then arises as to what remains of Marx's work when …
Comparative Biochemical And Genetic Studies Of Testa Development In Normal And Hull-Less Phenotypes Of Pumpkin (Cucurbita Pepo L), Susan Gerardette Stuart
Comparative Biochemical And Genetic Studies Of Testa Development In Normal And Hull-Less Phenotypes Of Pumpkin (Cucurbita Pepo L), Susan Gerardette Stuart
Doctoral Dissertations
A detailed investigation was conducted to examine further the biochemical and genetic bases of the hull-less phenotypic condition in testae of seeds of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.). During seed development, testa moisture declined substantially (30%) in both phenotypes, whereas testa dry and fresh weights increased dramatically between 10 to 20 days post-anthesis and then declined steadily until seeds reached maturity. Structural compositional analysis revealed marked reductions in lignin (78%) and cellulose (50%) in hull-less compared with normal phenotypes; whereas no differences in non-cellulosic polysaccharides were found at 20 days post-anthesis. Between 20 days post-anthesis and maturity, pectin content of testae …
Digital Analysis Of Pulse Code Modulated Signals In Telecommunications Channels, Edmund Littlefield Chase
Digital Analysis Of Pulse Code Modulated Signals In Telecommunications Channels, Edmund Littlefield Chase
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation the techniques required to test pulse code modulated telecommunications channels are developed using the fast Fourier transform. The techniques are then applied through the design and assembly of the corresponding hardware. Windowing of data to improve spectral estimation is discussed as well as the conditions where special test signals may be synthesized to preclude the need for windowing. Conjugate-periodic functions encountered in prime radix transforms are defined and their fast transform techniques are developed.
Electrophoretic And Enzymatic Identification Of Proteins Associated With The Development Of Competence In Bacillus Subtilis, Susan Alicia Coughlin
Electrophoretic And Enzymatic Identification Of Proteins Associated With The Development Of Competence In Bacillus Subtilis, Susan Alicia Coughlin
Doctoral Dissertations
A two-dimensional zymogram procedure for the analysis of nucleases is described. Using purified deoxyribonuclease I (bovine pancreas), as little as 10 pg of nuclease can be detected. Isoelectric focusing (IEF) and non-equilibrium pH gradient electrophoresis (NEPHGE) were compared as first dimensions, in combination with SDS electrophoresis as the second dimension, in analyzing nucleases in lysates of Bacillus subtilis. All renaturable nuclease activities detected following SDS electrophoresis alone were resolved in NEPHGE-SDS electrophoresis gels whereas, in IEF-SDS gels, most were either at the basic end or were not present in the second dimensional gel. This method of analysis has revealed a …
A Reconceptualization Of Childcare Based On Comparisons Of Three Childcare Alternatives, Anne Larrimore Oden Law
A Reconceptualization Of Childcare Based On Comparisons Of Three Childcare Alternatives, Anne Larrimore Oden Law
Doctoral Dissertations
The present study examines three aspects of childcare: the childcare provider, the parent, and the social environment within childcare centers. Providers of family daycare, and directors of group daycare and nursery schools were surveyed regarding the services they provide. Parents whose children attended the surveyed childcare homes and centers were surveyed regarding their experiences with childcare, and the influence of childcare on the child and family. Videotapes were made in five centers, and then analyzed to determine the frequency of certain activities, and the probabilities of various social exchanges in each center.
The data were analyzed to describe each childcare …
Comedy: The Uncertain Terrain Of John Hawkes, Peter M. Johnson
Comedy: The Uncertain Terrain Of John Hawkes, Peter M. Johnson
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the nature and function of John Hawkes' comic method. Although most critics acknowledge that Hawkes writes comedy, very few of them agree on the moral nature of this comedy. Chapter I examines these differing responses to Hawkes' work and offers an alternative way of evaluating his humor, based on his own and other critics' comments on comedy. This chapter also suggests that our responses to Hawkes' humor occur on an uncertain terrain where two or more, sometimes opposite, reactions to a text clash, forcing us into continuous moments of indecision.
Chapter II deals with Hawkes' first novel, …
The Lives Of Criminally Violent Women (Volumes I And Ii) (Stress, Homicide), John Theodore Kirkpatrick
The Lives Of Criminally Violent Women (Volumes I And Ii) (Stress, Homicide), John Theodore Kirkpatrick
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of the present study is to better understand why some people kill others. Using the autobiographical accounts of convicted female homicide offenders, this work defines the life experiences behind their violence. Seventy-six women, representing several age and racial groups, were separately interviewed at the North Carolina Correctional Center for Women. The life stories these women tell and the ways they recount them offer a unique view of the social worlds where murder and manslaughter occur.
The study's theoretical orientation is built from the literature on life stress. There is strong evidence that an excess of stress can adversely …
Homogeneous Nucleation Of Nonane In Argon Using An Expansion Cloud Chamber, Gregg Wesley Adams
Homogeneous Nucleation Of Nonane In Argon Using An Expansion Cloud Chamber, Gregg Wesley Adams
Doctoral Dissertations
"The homogeneous nucleation rate of nonane has been measured using an expansion cloud chamber. Data were obtained for pre-expansion temperatures of 45°C, 35°C, 25°C, 15°C, 5°C, and -5°C. The measured nucleation rate ranges from 102 to 105 drops/cm3 -sec over a temperature range of 216 K to 270 K. The data set is sufficiently extensive to provide a detailed test for nucleation theories applied to nonane. The measured rates are compared with the "classical" nucleation theory and with a modified classical theory using the replacement factor of Reiss, Katz and Cohen (RKC). It is found that neither …
The Influence Of Additives And Their Interactions On Copper Electrorefining, Chwan-Tsann Wang
The Influence Of Additives And Their Interactions On Copper Electrorefining, Chwan-Tsann Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
"Protein colloid (glue), thiourea, Avitone and chloride ion are the most common additives used electrorefining copper. The polarization behavior of these additives, single and combined, was studied by cyclic voltammetry techniques in conjunction with stationary and rotating disc electrodes. In the stationary electrode work, different protein colloids give substantially different results in polarization or interaction with other additives. The role played by Avitone is not clear, but it does somewhat modify other additives in the electrolyte. Thiourea can cause a depolarized peak and a polarized plateau depending on the concentration, the other additives present and the potential selected. Chloride ion …

The Precambrian Volcanic Stratigraphy And Petrology Of The Des Arc Ne 7 1/2 Minute Quadrangle, South Central St. Francois Mountains, Missouri, Vernon Max Brown
Doctoral Dissertations
"The Precambrian volcanics in the Des Arc NE 7½ minute quadrangle are composed predominantly of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs with minor rhyolitic, trachytic, and andesitic lavas, and basaltic dikes. Thirty-seven volcanic units were identified, mapped, and informally named. A minimum of 1,000 meters of volcanic section is present. The rhyolites consist of phenocrysts of albitized alkali feldspar, albitic plagioclase, quartz, opaques, and ferromagnesium relicts set in a devitrified and locally recrystallized felsitic matrix. Pumice and lithophysal structures are common in the ash flows.
Chemically, the rhyolites are quite similar. The potassium to sodium ratio in individual units, however, tends to vary …

Smokers And Smoking: An In-Depth Interview Study Of Initiation, Transition, Maintenance, And Cessation, Jeanne Colette Riddell
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to explore, through in-depth unstructured interviews, the factors preventing experimentation with cigarettes and the factors related to cigarette smoking. Hypotheses generation, as opposed to hypothesis testing, was the goal. Forty-seven men and women between the ages of 18 and 48 with diverse smoking (or nonsmoking) histories and current smoking patterns and attitudes were interviewed.
The results are organized around the four stages in a smoker's career. Numerous quotes from the interviews and five illustrative cases are presented to exemplify the patterns that emerged.
A number of hypotheses specific to each stage of smoking were …
Theoretical Studies Of Water On Substrates, Sergio M. Terrazas
Theoretical Studies Of Water On Substrates, Sergio M. Terrazas
Doctoral Dissertations
"Model interaction potentials for H2O on a basal f)-silver iodide substrate containing two types of defects, a potassium impurity and a four atomic layer ledge, are used to calculate optimal binding energy contours for the adsorbed H2O molecule. (J. Phys. Chern. 84, 1473(1980)). The model substrate with the potassium impurity appears to increase the optimal binding energy at the preferred adsorption sites to 23 kcal/rnol -- a value approximately 40 % larger than the maximal binding energy sites on the defect-free model silver-exposed basal plane of AgI. The impurity also distorts the hexagonal symmetry of the …

Kinetic studies of the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide to methane and methanol were carried out over iron-titanium alloy catalysts, in a continuous flow fixed bed differential reactor. The catalysts studied included FeTi, Fe(,1.5)Ti and Fe(,2.5)Ti alloys with pure Fe used as a comparison. The catalysts used were all unsupported with an averaged initial particle size of 270 microns. The range of feed compositions was varied from 10 to 33% CO with the remainder being H(,2). Temperatures were varied from 520 to 590 K at a total pressure of 34 atm for all the catalysts studied. Additionally, a pressure of 13.6 …
A Study Of The Thermodynamics Of Anion Binding To Human Serum Transferrin, Donald Allen Folajtar
A Study Of The Thermodynamics Of Anion Binding To Human Serum Transferrin, Donald Allen Folajtar
Doctoral Dissertations
Electron paramagnetic resonance difference spectroscopy of diferric human serum transferrin indicates that certain inorganic anions alter the electronic environment of the ion centers of the protein by binding to specific anion sites. The binding of these anions (thiocyanate, perchlorate, adenosinetriphosphate, pyrophosphate, and chloride) is shown to occur pairwise with high positive cooperativity, an observation unique to nonstereospecific anion-protein interactions. It is shown that human serum transferrin has binding sites for four nonsynergistic anions, two in each domain. The association constants are reported.
It is unlikely that the anions bind to a significant extent at the sites occupied by the synergistic …
Nonuniformly And Randomly Sampled Systems, George Dimitrios Kontopidis
Nonuniformly And Randomly Sampled Systems, George Dimitrios Kontopidis
Doctoral Dissertations
Problems with missing data, sampling irregularities and randomly sampled systems are the topics covered by this dissertation.
The spectral analysis of a series of periodically repeated sampling patterns is developed. Parameter estimation of autoregressive moving average models using partial observations and an algorithm to fill in the missing data are proved and demonstrated by simulation programs. Interpolation of missing data using bandlimiting assumptions and discrete Fourier transform techniques is developed. Representation and analysis of randomly sampled linear systems with independent and identically distributed sampling intervals are studied. The mean, and the mean-square behavior of a multiple-input multiple-output randomly sampled system …
A Residential Electrical Load Model, Charles Francis Walker
A Residential Electrical Load Model, Charles Francis Walker
Doctoral Dissertations
This work develops a time varying residential electric load model based on the philosophy that the availability of people to turn on electrical appliances and their tendency to do so at particular times are significant factors in determining the time varying nature of the residential load. Additional contributions to the load are the result of peoples availability and tendency to perform direct actions (e.g. dish washing) that indirectly cause electrical appliances (e.g. water heaters) to turn on and off under the control of their sensors. The availability and tendencies of the residents also affect, to some extent, the contribution to …
Teachers' Perceptions Of Hyperactivity And Conduct Problems In Children, Sibylle J. Carlson
Teachers' Perceptions Of Hyperactivity And Conduct Problems In Children, Sibylle J. Carlson
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the salient factors in teachers' judgements of hyperactivity and conduct problems. A set of thirty eight vignettes was presented to fifty elementary school teachers. Five variables, two levels of each, were systematically varied in the vignettes: gender (male or female), quality of schoolwork (adequate or poor), activity level (medium or high), aggression (non-aggressive or aggressive), and peer acceptance (liked or not-liked). For each vignette, subjects rated the extent they considered the child to be hyperactive (or a conduct problem), how likely they would be to refer the child for evaluation, and …
Multiple Scattering From A Random And Inhomogeneous Slab, Haci-Murat Hubey
Multiple Scattering From A Random And Inhomogeneous Slab, Haci-Murat Hubey
Doctoral Dissertations
The reflection and transmission functions of an inhomogeneous slab are calculated by labeling the wave by the number of reflections it has undergone in the medium. The Riccati equation, satisfied by the reflected amplitude, is decomposed into a finite set of linear equations by taking into account the number of scatterings taking place inside the medium and is solved by a novel iterative approach. The order-of-scattering reflection functions method presented here and the coupled integral equation approach of the Bremmer solutions for the internal fluxes are set in a unified frame. The solutions of the Riccati equation are computed numerically …
Major Histocompatibility Complex (Mhc) Vs Non-Mhc Influences On Response To Rsv-Induced Tumors In Chickens, David Winston Brown
Major Histocompatibility Complex (Mhc) Vs Non-Mhc Influences On Response To Rsv-Induced Tumors In Chickens, David Winston Brown
Doctoral Dissertations
The MHC of the chicken (B complex) has been shown to exert a decisive influence on the fate of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV)-induced tumors. However, noninbred chickens with identical B genotypes and inbred lines indistinguishable at the MHC have demonstrated considerable variation in response to RSV challenge. The major objective of this research was to determine the cause of variation in anti-Rous sarcoma response observed among chickens with "identical" B genotypes.
Chickens were evaluated for anti-tumor response following wingweb inoculation with RSV at six weeks of age. A comparison of anti-sarcoma responses of (15I-5 x 6-1)F1 versus (15I-5 x 7-2)F1 …

Doctoral Dissertations
American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) in forest stands of North America are threatened by a destructive disease commonly known as the beech bark disease. Investigations on bark structure and on response of bark tissues to mechanical injury and pathogen invasion would increase our understanding of the etiology of this disease. The objectives of this investigation were to provide descriptions of the development and anatomy of bark of American beech, with emphasis on bark periderms. Investigations were made of the ontogeny of the first exophylactic periderm, and on characteristics and development of the necrophylactic periderms resulting from the beech bark disease …
Predicting The Formation Of Condensation Ash From Coal Combustion, Shu-Mu Hsieh
Predicting The Formation Of Condensation Ash From Coal Combustion, Shu-Mu Hsieh
Doctoral Dissertations
This study predicts the nature of condensation ash formed from direct combustion of coal. Three coal-fire combustors, a cyclone-fired (CF) boiler, a pulverized-fuel (PF) and a drop tube (DT) furnace were considered.
Predictions were based on the hypothesis that condensation ash is formed through two consecutive steps: vaporization and recondensation. Metal-containing species in coal are believed to vaporize during high temperature combustion. These vapors then diffuse and condense at the bulk gas phase.
The amount of metal-related vapor transport to the bulk gas phase is dictated by char surface composition which is, in turn, determined by the temperature history of …
